"Massive salad"

Sparklfairy · 31/07/2021 06:57

I see it here all the time, it's the new mythical mumsnet chicken I think. In the recent lovely (and not so lovely) weather I've been eating a lot of salad, but I really want to know what other people think is a 'massive salad'.

So, AIBU to ask when you make a massive salad what you put in it and how much??

Iceberg lettuce, cucumber, tomato all chopped up and mixed with salad cream.

Small bit of quiche.

Half a pork pie.

Pickled onions.

French fries.

A few crisps.

Coleslaw.

Beetroot.

Voila! Massive 'salad' 🤣

Cyberpixie · 31/07/2021 09:56

Oops. I forgot the slices of chicken or ham.

OldTinHat · 31/07/2021 09:56

I'm very hungry now! Is a massive salad a good breakfast option?!

Ninkanink · 31/07/2021 09:57

I love threads like this - they always make so so hungry too!

Cottonheadedninymuggins · 31/07/2021 09:59

Love a salad but mine are a bit bog standard and boring.

Lettucr leaves (and occasionally some spinach), chopped up cherry tomatoes, a mix or 2 or 3 grated cheeses, pickled pearl onions, piccalilli, boiled eggs, boiled potatoes, chopped gherkin (Dont like cucumber) chopped pepper, cress, assorted meat (usually chicken or ham chunks), salad cream and warm crusty bread and butter and a bowl of tortilla chips to help yourself with

Occasionally some picky picnic bits too in the middle of the table like those 2 for 3 pound things in tesco /asda if it's one of those days we have been busy and not stopped all day for lunch etc.

Vegetarian here. For me a ‘massive salad’ would be a meal needing nothing else (maybe bread).
It would include basics PLUS a combo of things like advocado, mozzarella or grilled halloumi or lots of Parmesan shaved with veg peeler, toasted pumpkin (or other) seeds, croutons, a more substantial dressing - maybe tahini involved or yoghurt or soured cream.

Insert1x20p · 31/07/2021 10:04

Red and white shredded cabbage
Charred broccoli
Green beans
Radishes
Cold sliced new potatoes
Halloumi pan fried in chilli oil
Japanese sesame dressing

Lorw · 31/07/2021 10:10

I’m boring 😂

Iceberg lettuce(because any other lettuce is rank) cucumber
Boiled egg
Chicken/ham/pork slices
Sweet pickled onions
Cheddar grated
Grated carrot
Coleslaw/potato salad-ideally Morrison’s the best because that is the bomb
Tomatoes
Sweet peppers
Some Mayo or salad cream maybe

I love a main course salad especially in the summer. Some of my specialties are:

Greek salad - romaine, cucumber, tomato, red onion, red and yellow peppers, feta, kalamata olives, croutons

Tuna Nicosia - romaine, cucumber, tomato, red onion, red and yellow peppers, green beans, boiled new potatoes, hard boiled egg wedges, capers, anchovies, croutons, seared tuna steak

Seafood salad - romaine, cucumber, tomato, red and yellow peppers, croutons, seafood salad (mixed seafood (mussels, calamari, prawns) with chopped celery, lots of fresh chopped flat leaf parsley, fresh basil, minced onion, capers, olive oil, lemon juice, rice vinegar)

Chef Salad - romaine, cucumber, tomato, red onion, red and yellow peppers, good quality ham and turkey slices, and Emmental slices rolled up together and the cut into swirls, can also add boiled egg and croutons

ByTheSea · 31/07/2021 10:17

I put kalamata olives in the tuna Nicoise too

ByTheSea · 31/07/2021 10:18

Also, can add avocado to the seafood salad or just use prawns instead of a seafood mix

Atalune · 31/07/2021 10:20

Chef salad sounds great! What dressing?

ByTheSea · 31/07/2021 10:21

Dressings are whatever you fancy. Loads of people like a thousand island type dressing with the chef salad.

RJnomore1 · 31/07/2021 10:27

@Sparklfairy yes that’s the one, it’s quick easy and will fill you well!

me4real · 31/07/2021 10:44

For me it's the volume. Like, if the size is literally massive, but still good to eat if you're on a diet.

If you mean 'a salad that's actually nice' then Harvester salads are pretty good.

LapinR0se · 31/07/2021 10:51

Salad is king

me4real · 31/07/2021 11:03

Salad is king

@LapinR0se If you can actually appreciate/enjoy it, that's a real blessing.

supercatlady · 31/07/2021 11:18

Sugar snap peas sliced lengthways are lovely in salad

HeronLanyon · 31/07/2021 11:36

Current dinner salad having a lot is watermelon, feta, Kalamata olives, sometime with some lettuce shredded.
Perfect for hot day (any day frankly).

StrawberrySquash · 31/07/2021 11:53

Love salad. I love veg and it's easy because you just use whatever is in the fridge.
Needs to be a decent size though and feature protein and carbohydrates. Restaurant salads are rarely sufficiently filling and massive.
Someone shared this the other day, which looks good.

Kalvinette · 31/07/2021 12:18

It's how loads of cultures eat. Not everything needs to be served with a massive scoop of some kind of potato based dish

KatherineJaneway · 31/07/2021 14:18

You go to some pubs / restaurants and they say 'served with salad' which can mean two leaves of lettuce, one slice of tomato and if you're lucky a bit of cucumber.

To me a massive salad is one that is a main course on its own.

AmyDudley · 31/07/2021 15:03

For me it is a mel in itself salad - as opposed to a side. My favourite is
Rocket leaves
tomato
cucumber
celery
grated carrot
sliced avocado
grilled halloumi
toasted pumpkin seeds.
balsamic and olive oil dressing.

and obviously plenty of lurtyucrvof hskd.

SingingInTheShithouse · 31/07/2021 15:22

Feta, olives, spinach, rocket, pea shoots, basil leaves, spring or red onions toasted pine nuts, beetroot, peppers, tomatoes, grated carrots, avocado, couscous, chickpeas

Or similar with other cheeses, seafood, fish, new potatoes or brown rice salad, switch up the salad leaves etc. But basically a big plateful with a side of whole carbs & protein

BoltonDoowar · 31/07/2021 15:24

I like the Pizza Express Niçoise salad. Veg at the bottom and then filled with tuna, boiled eggs, anchovies, and with dough sticks and 2 pots of garlic butter and 2 pots of salad dressing
