"Massive salad"

I see it here all the time, it's the new mythical mumsnet chicken I think. In the recent lovely (and not so lovely) weather I've been eating a lot of salad, but I really want to know what other people think is a 'massive salad'.

So, AIBU to ask when you make a massive salad what you put in it and how much??

nosy

@JavaQ last week I slow cooked some chicken thighs until they were falling apart and melt in the mouth and added them to a massive salad Grin it was SO good!!

Our salads are boring but are massive.

Full bag of mixed green leaves, 2 peppers, huge carrot finely chopped (or two smaller), whole red onion, 2 apples, can of sweetcorn, 1/2 cucumber, beetroot, 3 tomatoes, dressing.

Serves 3 with main meal such as chicken kebabs and pitta bread

@Chouxchou

I ordered a salad in a restaurant in Florida (not like me at all but it was late and I was exhausted from the flight). It came on one of those giant oval plates and comprised: salad leaves (I think), a ton of coleslaw, about half a pound of cheese, various meat, eggs, croutons, bacon bits, sweetcorn, sweet bread rolls and honey butter. I’m not a small eater but I managed about 10%. It was the most massive salad I’ve ever seen and I still think about it now sometimes.
Now that is my idea of a salad! 😁

Although the lettuce leaves may get left to one side.

I mix up a bowl of salad and leave it in the fridge, when I want some I take a small amount and add my dressing, I have : Radish, spring onions, cucumber, baby gem lettuce chopped up small, chives and cherry tomatoes left whole, I mix with sour cream and mayonnaise, it’s actually really delicious, as an evening meal, we have it with chicken and jacket potatoes as lunch on its own

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 31/07/2021 09:25

Salad isn't food, it's garnish.

randomsabreuse · 31/07/2021 09:26

A pub where I used to live did massive salads. BIG plates, about 20 different components including nuts, fruit and "normal" salad stuff, with a massive portion of protein in the centre. Crab and Prawn was great... I couldn't finish them.

Meraas · 31/07/2021 09:26

Massive salad sounds like food competitiveness.

Big salad sounds fine.

RJnomore1 · 31/07/2021 09:28

I can highly recommend a Glasgow salad, recipe is online.

IchHabeSiebenFlowers · 31/07/2021 09:29

I mainly make the typical 'boring British' salad - lettuce, various chopped salad vegetables and whatever protein is available.

But I also love a shopska salad (Bulgaria) - onion, tomato, sirene cheese (I subsitute feta in), sometimes bell pepper. It's a long time since I've been to Bulgaria, so I'm not sure how far it's evolved when I make it, but it's so moreish.

Comtesse · 31/07/2021 09:29

@Thunderface I had that once in a fancy steak restaurant in the States when they make a caesar salad at the table for you - it was a starter and I couldn’t even finish it. Mad portion sizes….

@LeanneBrownsLonelyBraincell now THAT’S a massive salad arf!

Sparklfairy · 31/07/2021 09:32

@RJnomore1 had to look it up, is it this? If so, YES Grin

Been turned on to adding a bit of grape in a green salad or if using beetroot a bit of melon in that component.

Bloody lovely.

Well that should have made at least 7 salads and a soup

Blabla81 · 31/07/2021 09:39

Baby leaf and rocket, chopped vine tomatoes, chopped cucumber, spring onion, coriander, lemon and coriander olives, cooked runner beans, chargrilled chicken pieces, olive oil, lemon juice and salt.
Sometimes ham and feta instead of chicken.

Sparklfairy · 31/07/2021 09:40

@SchrodingersImmigrant It might have if I wasn't such a greedy fucker Grin

I had a massive plate of 'salad' at a restaurant this week. The main ingredients were salmon, prawns, potatoes, beetroot plus all the usually salad things. It was very good.

Chouxchou · 31/07/2021 09:40

I like to make a salad of eggs, bacon, sausage, hash browns, baked beans and mushrooms with ketchup dressing and toast on the side

k1233 · 31/07/2021 09:41

I make a nice salad
Baby leaves with grated carrot and beetroot
Fresh Mint
Cucumber slices not chunks
Cherry tomatoes
Capsicum
Mushroom
Feta
Snow pea sprouts
Avocado
In summer - slices of mango
Top with a splash of balsalmic vinegar

Goes great with moroccan chicken, grilled fish etc

I've hot another yummy one, but super simple - cucumber sliced, capsicum, orange (cut across the segments otherwise it's mushy). Goes great with tuscan chicken

If I have a salad for a meal it involves

some type of lettuce
meat; ham, bacon, chicken, salmon
cheese; camembert, blue cheese, cheddar, feta, brie, manchego etc
veg: cucumber, tomatoes, corn, spring or red onion
Often add an egg or avocado or potato salad.
Sauce: ranch or salad cream.

Delicious!

My take on a ‘massive salad’ would include a Caesar with lots of dressing, chicken, bacon, parmsesan and some lovely warm crusty bread.

ShinySquirrel · 31/07/2021 09:46

Massive salad = Mumsnet version of a "cheeky Nandos".

DentonsFringeArnottsWaistcoat · 31/07/2021 09:47

Back when I used to eat meat, my favourite salad was sliced duck (nice and pink) and pear with watercress, spinach and grated beetroot with a dressing made basically by heating up some thick cut orange marmalade. Yum.

DentonsFringeArnottsWaistcoat · 31/07/2021 09:49

Current favourite is Fattoush with some fried pitta. Also Yum.

Ninkanink · 31/07/2021 09:52

@AvantGardening

A dinner plate sized portion that includes a protein and is a meal in itself would be a massive salad. To differentiate from a simple side salad that accompanies other elements of a meal.
This.

It’s to make it clear that it’s not just a few leaves on a plate, but a substantial meal and a proper serving of it, too.

I’ll list out what a ‘massive salad’ would be for me later (although i don’t actually use that term), because I haven’t had my coffee yet so I wouldn’t be able to think!
