I see it here all the time, it's the new mythical mumsnet chicken I think. In the recent lovely (and not so lovely) weather I've been eating a lot of salad, but I really want to know what other people think is a 'massive salad'.

So, AIBU to ask when you make a massive salad what you put in it and how much??

nosy

Not like when I was in Greece many moons ago, and ordered the tomato salad, and it came as, just a plate of sliced tomatoes with olive oil drizzled on 🙄

@category12

My massive salad is made in empty glass coffee jars (Douwe Egbert type)

Why?

@category12 I thought that too 🤣 Maybe to take to work as lunch .... 🤔

I often have a massive salad as my main meal. Lettuce/leaves tomato cucumber carrot peppers (basic, cut up fresh each time), then I usually do batches of prepared salad & keep them in the fridge, maybe fennel & orange, greek salad with herbs & feta, a lentil salad with goats cheese, or barley with pine nuts, lemon & bacon, or salad nicoise, tabbouleh, or something with leftover cold pasta, quinoa or new potatoes. Fish. Grilled peppers. Olives. Cheese. Hummus. Pickles. Boiled egg. Sometimes I add nuts or seeds, or alfalfa sprouts. I don't really like "salad dressing" though - mayonnaise, nor any kind of bottled dressings, they're all too thick & oily for me. I like to taste the salad. I mostly just put salt & pepper & some vinegar (balsamic or cider) on my salad leaves. I usually have a big side of salad with anything I possibly can.

Half a cherry tomato, a lettuce leaf and a cube of cucumber is more than enough for my delicate sensibilities. That will do me for the weekend.

@ThinWomansBrain

Love the suggestion above of adding a carb element - chips and a burger Grin

😂

@ThinWomansBrain
That would make and excellent menu item
"Freshly chopped iceberg lettuce, white onion, sliced beef tomatoes, gherkins served with cucumber relish, mayonnaise and topped with a brioche bun, 8oz steak burger, melted cheese and chipped potatoes"

Re why the glass jar, i make them all at once and they keep fresh in the fridge for days in the cold glass. It saves time through the week and yes they are easy to take to work for lunch.

I wouldn’t refer to a massive salad. Simply a salad. Usually, in summer, If we’ve friends or family eating I make a few different salads and keep anything left in the fridge for lunches.

Coleslaw
Waldorf
Beetroot and orange
Curried mushroom and apricot
Tabbouleh
Julienne veg
Tomato salad
Chilli cucumber

All or some atop various leaves and chopped salad vegetables and served with whatever we are eating.

Unusually for her, DD announced “successful salad” yesterday at lunch.
As an accompaniment to a ball of mozzarella each, for 2 people it contained
Half a cucumber, semi peeled and cubed.
400g cherry tomatoes, halved and squeezed.
Half a yellow pepper, chopped.
Half a small red onion, finely diced.
Apple cider vinegar
Evo oil
And a generous mix of herbs: dried garlic, rosemary, oregano, parsley, salt and black pepper.
Left to soak for 1 hour and served with bread for the carbivores.

My family all have different tastes for the leafy part, so I serve iceberg/rocket/chicory/ Romaine/shredded white cabbage/radicchio/ whatever on the side.
It also stops them wilting during the marinading time.

Massive for me means anything bigger than a cereal bowl size.

Lettuce (varying types)
Tomato
Olives
Beetroot
Artichoke
Boiled egg
Cheese (varying types)
Chorizo
Other protein - often roast chicken but also tuna, ham or prawns
Sometimes avocado
Plus balsamic and olive oil for dressing

That’s what dh eats anyway almost daily. I don’t like all of those components, would ditch the artichoke, beetroot and chorizo then add cucumber, maybe sweetcorn and deffo avocado.

@Faevern that's actually really smart!

PPs saying they can be calorific... does anyone remember the program Secret Eaters? There was a woman who was 'mystified' (presenter's words) as to why she was putting on weight as 'all I eat really is salad'. Under surveillance she was shown to add around 1/4 large jar, which really is probably about 4 heaped tablespoons, of Hellmann's to her salads Shock I'm guilty of being heavy handed with mayo and not just in salads and cheese, and butter, and cream, and all the bad stuff but I think the nutritionist said it was adding about 1400 cals to her meal

Nuts and avocado though I don't think are bad, even if it's more calories. The good fats keep you fuller for longer I think.

I wish I liked salad, it would really help when I'm dieting, but I really dislike raw vegetables. I would happily take all the ingredients, add beansprouts and stick it in a wok with some soy sauce and eat it everyday though!

I ordered a salad in a restaurant in Florida (not like me at all but it was late and I was exhausted from the flight). It came on one of those giant oval plates and comprised: salad leaves (I think), a ton of coleslaw, about half a pound of cheese, various meat, eggs, croutons, bacon bits, sweetcorn, sweet bread rolls and honey butter. I’m not a small eater but I managed about 10%. It was the most massive salad I’ve ever seen and I still think about it now sometimes.

Grated carrot and sweet corn have no place in a salad, massive or otherwise.

Bluntness100 · 31/07/2021 09:15

There’s really no bad foods, it’s simply about eating in moderation. Mayo isn’t bad, but eating four heaped tablespoons in one sitting is. An avocado isn’t bad, but eating four in one sitting with a meal is, eating nuts isn’t bad, eating a massive bag is. None of it is bad, it’s simply how much you consume.

Shredded romaine and baby spinach
Grated carrot
3 sun vine tomatoes
A mini pepper
About 3cm of cucumber
A spring onion or equivalent of red onion.

Plus 73g Tilda flavoured rice and 85g cooked chicken.

With either house or honey mustard dressing.

The weights are so a rice pouch lasts 4 days and a packet of chicken lasts 2.
