"Massive salad"

Sparklfairy · 31/07/2021 06:57

I see it here all the time, it's the new mythical mumsnet chicken I think. In the recent lovely (and not so lovely) weather I've been eating a lot of salad, but I really want to know what other people think is a 'massive salad'.

So, AIBU to ask when you make a massive salad what you put in it and how much??

I sometimes fill my bread proving bowl with salad and eat the whole thing Grin

Not talking a few limp lettuce leaves either. I mean giant homemade croutons, halloumi or feta, big chunks of avocado, a lush dressing, heritage tomatoes, grilled peaches, pine nuts, the works.

RealBecca · 31/07/2021 08:16

Beetroot, pickled onions, chickpeas or houmous, cheese, cucumber, tomatoe, warmed butternut or sweet potato, warm kale, tinned lentils, nuts and sesame seeds, spinach, mint leaves.

Must have a warm element is key.

bouncydog · 31/07/2021 08:19

Had a fab one in a restaurant yesterday with grilled king prawns, chilli and mashed avocado on top of loads of leaves, peppers, cucumber, tomato etc.

ThinWomansBrain · 31/07/2021 08:21

Love the suggestion above of adding a carb element - chips and a burger Grin

megletthesecond · 31/07/2021 08:21

Couchbettato · 31/07/2021 08:23

I ate 3 salads yesterday. 😳

Not sure if they were massive though. Just, bowl sized. Does that make me a greedy salad bastard hahaha?

Fridaysgirl17 · 31/07/2021 08:25

For me a massive salad would be my go to I had it a lot last year when pregnant as I had Gestational diabetes so it was my main meal,I'd have lettuce, tomatoes, scallions, grated cheese, chicken, ham,a few croutons sometimes,a dressing or light mayo, and then I'd cook a wholemeal pita, break it up into it and that would be it

EssentialHummus · 31/07/2021 08:29

I love a salad for dinner - lettuce (either home grown from my heat lamp, lambs leaf or iceberg), loads of tomatoes and cucumber, with lots of grilled halloumi on top and a simple dressing. Or chopped tomatoes, cucumber, bit of onion, tinned tuna and a slice boiled egg. In a bowl where the bottom is about the size of my hand.

I absolutely loved the terribly named Toss'd in central London - are they still going?

Faevern · 31/07/2021 08:32

My massive salad is made in empty glass coffee jars (Douwe Egbert type) Layers of shredded cabbage, julienne carrots, slices of red onion, cucumber, peppers, radish, topped with rocket and small tomatoes. It’s amazing how much you can squash in and it’s already massive when tipped on your plate. Then anything else can be added.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 31/07/2021 08:34

In Switzerland, a big salad often appears on the menu.

LeanneBrownsLonelyBraincell · 31/07/2021 08:34

A massive salad is one that is so big it actually fills your entire kitchen to the point you have to eat your way through it just to put the bins out.

HTH

Thunderface · 31/07/2021 08:34

I make a 'massive' salad regularly. It has cos lettuce, cucumber, sunstream or piccollo tomatoes, scallions, feta, avocado, peppers and homemade croutons with caesar or vinagarette.
My other favourite is tabbouleh or a cous cous version if I don't have bulgar.

BikeRunSki · 31/07/2021 08:37

@CandidaAlbicans2 and @FamishedAtAnAirport

Blush oops “a whole Little Gem lettuce or half an Iceberg”.

Why?

Goatinthegarden · 31/07/2021 08:37

My hangover staple is a big bowl of cold pasta, chopped cherry Tom’s cucumber, leaves, pepper, olives, feta and beetroot covered in balsamic dressing. Hardly low cal.

I eat loads of salads as main meals. If they’re going to be a main, they need something like lentils, cous cous, quinoa, bulgar or orzo to bulk it out.

Thunderface · 31/07/2021 08:38

I had a Caesar salad in a restaurant abroad a few years ago. It was served in a bowl that was as deep as a bucket. I ate steadily while dh consumed a large steak and made such little impact that the waiter was concerned I didn't like it. That was the ultimate massive salad.

DoingItMyself · 31/07/2021 08:40

Iceberg lettuce, spinach, rocket, watercress, celery, cucumber, tomato, peppers, carrots. I like my massive salads tasty and crunchy. Served with a little protein. Optional extras are beetroot, raspberries (better in salads than in desserts), blueberries or blackberries. Or for absolute self-indulgence, grapes.

OhGiveUp · 31/07/2021 08:40

Mine consists of
An iceberg lettuce leaf
2 slices of tomato
A bit of onion
A cheese slice
A burger
A burger bun.
Delicious.

BlueLobelia · 31/07/2021 08:41

My mum makes what we call 'super salads'. There is a limited amount of leaves but a massive amount of the regular salad vegetables, plus sweet corn, cashew nuts, blue cheese, fruit and usually chicken or basil marinated tofu (the ones that you get in vacuum packs).

Not low cal, but very satisfying, and filled with gorgeous nutrients.

To transport it maybe? I have a salad takeaway thing from Tiger that's shaped like a huge cup with a little removable pot in the lid for dressing and a fork that slots in the side. From the outside it looks like a respectable portion size, but if you squeeze it down you can easily for a main course in there.
Theoldcuriosityshop · 31/07/2021 08:46

I hate salad.

TheRealHousewife · 31/07/2021 08:46

My ‘massive’ salad fills a dinner plate and includes:- romaine lettuce chopped small, cherry toms quartered, thinly sliced spring onion, red pepper chopped, carrot, chopped pecans, quinoa, avocado, boiled egg, sometimes salmon or chicken. A dressing of avocado oil, white wine vinegar, crushed garlic, Dijon mustard, s&p, finely grated Parmesan (all shaken together in a small lidded jar). It’s the most calorific meal I have and comes in between 650-700 cals. Totally worth it as it all delicious goodness with ‘good’ fats, protein and fibre.

Be careful 😁 I got fat on massiive salads😂

One poster called her salads "chaotic". I love w it. That's my style.

I can recommend using mix of rocket, spinach and cress. Lots of flavour. Then fresh herbs. Really lift it up. Must have protein, some veg carb.
Like
Rocket, spinach, cress, tomatoes, cucumber, pickle, fermented cauli, fava beans (halved), grated feta, roasted pepper, tenderheart cabbage, arabic salad herb mix, pomegranate molasses, black pepper, lemon juice.

TheWholeJingbang · 31/07/2021 08:47

A decent Tuna Nicoise would fill anybody up
