… to ask why Giles Coren hasn’t been cancelled yet?

mowly77 · 20/07/2021 22:05

The vile Dawn Foster tweets ffs. But he seems Teflon coated. He will never be cancelled. Three fucking columns a week … a pissing radio show, albeit on Times Radio, which surely no one listens to. I would love to be proved wrong. Absolutely love to be.

@VashtaNerada

The people claiming that criticism of him is anti-semitic need to stop. Anti-semitism is a real and dangerous thing. Criticising someone who is clearly a cunt, is not the same.
It is however difficult to avoid the conclusion with some of these posts that the eagerness with which people are jumping on Coren is fuelled in part by anti-Semitism. The fact that someone occasionally acts like a cunt doesn't justify that.

Privileged white men are WAY over represented in the media

Posh boy chefs (Valentine, Hugh FW, even Floyd etc )
Posh boy writers ( this tool )
Posh boy actors (Eddie Redmayne, Damian Lewis, endless list)

SO fucking bored of them all

Hate that we seem to want to elect the useless fuckwits too, in a deferential doff cap you're so clever sir with your posh accent n all.

Toe curling

ArabellaPilkington · 21/07/2021 07:34

FWIW I'm Jewish and think Coren is a waste of space

Nothing whatsoever to do w race or religion

The chefs are scraping the barrel. Can't think of many modern chefs who fit the posh description - Jamie Oliver, Gordon Ramsey, Angela Hartnett, Tom Kerridge. I mean Keith Floyd is dead, so possibly not the best example.
movingadviceneeded · 21/07/2021 07:36

@Bryonyshcmyony it's really not amusing.

Bryonyshcmyony · 21/07/2021 07:40

Doesn't anyone else see the irony of this thread? 8 pages of really nasty, abusive comments about someone because they make also make nasty abusive comments?

I'd rather go for a drink with Giles Coren than the majority of anonymous keyboard warriors on here, being really nasty about someone because of some spiteful tweets. I rather hope he replies in a column. For sure it would be funnier than this bunch of frothing bollocks.

potniatheron · 21/07/2021 07:40

@Darkchocolateandcoffee

No one gets cancelled at The Times.

See also India Knight.

The India Knight thing is baffling. Last week's Sunday Times had an interview with a woman who found out that her husband had done time for having worst category paedophilic images. Must've been awkward in the ST office.

As other posters have mentioned, Giles is uncancellable because he is proper old Establishment and probably knows where all the bodies are buried. I also have a theory that public figures whose audience is largely male are less vulnerable to being cancelled that public figures whose audience is mostly female. See also Owen Jones.

ArabellaPilkington · 21/07/2021 07:41

Keith Floyd is an excellent example as he started the trend for it all

I notice you've missed out Nigella, Michel Roux Jr etc

Point is most people we see and hear from in the media are privileged white men

Cam77 · 21/07/2021 07:43

Britain is the country with the worst social mobility and worst nepotism in the whole of Europe.

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 21/07/2021 07:43

I loathe people who dish it out, but who can't take it. GC makes his living as a provocateur, being rude about other people, but a couple of tweets by Dawn Foster, pointing out the nepotism he has enjoyed, and he celebrates her death? That's unhinged.

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 21/07/2021 07:44

LOL - I guess you've never been to Italy?
ArabellaPilkington · 21/07/2021 07:45

Actually, Nigella is a really good example of how to have a great career based on talent, and to tweet incredible supportive stuff to make people feel good, and still have a famous dad.

And be Jewish. Grin

Bluebells1 · 21/07/2021 07:47

Cancel culture is not going to solve anything. You'll just polarize the society and the more powerful and well connected ones just keep thriving, regardless of what happens.

Stop reading the people you don't like, stop sharing and commenting and don't give them the oxygen that they crave. They'll go away. ANY publicity is good publicity for these people. The more people outrage, the more TV appearances and book deals go their way. So please stop.

Cam77 · 21/07/2021 07:47

@ArabellaPilkington
I’d rather hear from a non-privileged white man than a privileged white woman who got where she is through nepotism. Giles Coren likely has far more knowledge of issue and concern for issues facing white upper middle class women than he has concern for issues faced by a typical Amazon delivery driver. In Britain, sex isn’t remotely as important as privilege and class background when it comes to media figures and politicians.

Nigella Lawson is a good friend of both Corens, fyi
AbsolutelyPatsy · 21/07/2021 07:52

are his tweets always so awful?

Ibelieveinghosts · 21/07/2021 07:52

I don’t know who this person is but “cancel culture” is just the modern day version of burning heretics at the stake. So yes you are being unreasonable for subscribing into this god -awful movement

AbsolutelyPatsy · 21/07/2021 07:53

i only know him through his food programmes, which i enjoyed

CounsellorTroi · 21/07/2021 07:55

I would like to know what David Mitchell, who seems a decent sort, thinks of his brother in law.

Well you will never know. Perhaps they get on really well.

Your first theory is I think spot on. Your second isn’t. It’s all about class privilege, insider knowledge, saying the right thing, and family connections.

Bryonyshcmyony · 21/07/2021 08:00

“he knows where the bodies are buried" 😂😂

Do people really think that GC has his job because he has secret insider information that he could use to blackmail someone? And not because he's a provocateur in the grand tradition of provocateurs, driving traffic to newspapers and websites?

SometimesIFeedTheSparrows · 21/07/2021 08:02

www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.esquire.com/uk/culture/news/amp9819/giles-coren-masturbation-farewell-to-palms/

He's a bit weird. I think he does thrive off the attention - see all the guff about his car getting nicked. But in the same way he spent years being obsessed by his knob, he doesn't differentiate between good attention and bad attention. Hence why he acts like a prat in that hotel thing and online, he's acting up for the crowd not realising they are laughing at him rather than with him.

LittleBearPad · 21/07/2021 08:02

He’s really really not ‘proper old establishment’. It’s pretty obvious he’s quite aware of it too and frequently isn’t at ease with people who are. Far too keen to remind people where he went to school and university.

Nigella’s just as much the product of nepotism - how do you think she and her brother both got journalism careers in the first place. They and their father knew the right people.

The difference is Nigella appears to be nice and Giles appears to be chippy.
