The vile Dawn Foster tweets ffs. But he seems Teflon coated. He will never be cancelled. Three fucking columns a week … a pissing radio show, albeit on Times Radio, which surely no one listens to. I would love to be proved wrong. Absolutely love to be.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 21/07/2021 09:12

@Benjispruce5

Victoria is married to David Mitchell and Alexander Armstrong is married to Giles’s wife’s sister. A very well connect set.
I can't even begin to imagine the smugness levels of a family Christmas chez that lot. Grin
hawkehurstgang · 21/07/2021 09:17

People shouldn't be cancelled. It's so sinister and worrying.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 21/07/2021 09:20

Nope. I may come across as being unbelievably thick, but I didn't even clock the fact that he's Jewish.

Same here

Mind - with regard to nepotism, which of us wouldn't get our kids started in a decent profession if we could? It may not be right, if they are useless at the job, but its a natural impulse.

3Britnee · 21/07/2021 09:24

Yabvvvvvu. No one should be cancelled. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and to voice it, whether anyone else agrees with it or not.

BoredZelda · 21/07/2021 09:32

Because malicious, nasty people who display behaviours which the general population wouldn’t find acceptable shouldn’t be afforded the privilege that being in the public eye affords them.

Who decides who gets to be in the public eye in your scenario? Perhaps a government charter?

SinisterBumFacedCat · 21/07/2021 09:38

That’s not opinion. It’s insulting the dead. I would say most of us were brought up not to do that. He has absolutely no class.

Maggiesfarm · 21/07/2021 09:43

I didn't know anything about the late Dawn Foster but looked her up and she had a horrible, rare disease, poor woman.

Giles Coren is OK. So what if his dad was in the industry too, there are plenty of people who follow in parents' footsteps and sometimes get a leg up, that's life. They still have to prove themselves.

His tweet was horrible but Dawn Foster didn't have to say what she said, it was nasty and unnecessary.

It's over now.

AlfonsoTheMango · 21/07/2021 09:43

I don't believe that people should be "cancelled" but I do believe that people should use common sense and a certain amount of restraint regarding what they say on social media.

To say on social media that you are glad (or whatever the odious Coren said) that a young woman is dead is offensive and in poor taste. The fact that Coren thought this appropriate - and a 'joke' about having sex with and killing a teenager funny - says more about him than anything anyone on MN could write.

Would I tell Coren to his face that I find him odious and loathsome? Yes. Would I say so in a court of law? Yes.

Would Coren celebrate the death of a young woman and joke about paedophilia and murder to the families of the people in question? Would he repeat this in a court of law? That remains to be seen.

Having no class but having white middle class privilege 😐

And also, people are allowed to be dicks.

AlfonsoTheMango · 21/07/2021 09:45

I have just read about Dawn Foster. How awful. My condolences to her family.

AlfonsoTheMango · 21/07/2021 09:46

@Bryonyshcmyony - people are allowed to be dicks.

Yes, your post is a case in point.

Bryonyshcmyony · 21/07/2021 09:47

Exactly!

potniatheron · 21/07/2021 09:52

@Bryonyshcmyony

“he knows where the bodies are buried" 😂😂

Do people really think that GC has his job because he has secret insider information that he could use to blackmail someone? And not because he's a provocateur in the grand tradition of provocateurs, driving traffic to newspapers and websites?

Yeah for sure. He's adjacent to the Primsore Hill and Chipping Norton sets. He definitely will know stuff that other public figures have D Notices out on or would generally prefer to keep buried.

@Cam77 I think you're right on the connections thing, this would also apply to Owen Jones who is a protege of John MacDonald. But you're wrong on the nepotism thing I'm afraid. Greece, where I'm originally from, is way, way, way worse for that and also very bad on social mobility.

SlipperTripper · 21/07/2021 10:00

I have always felt that both he and Victoria come across as being massively sanctimonious.

Always thought that if is their real personality instead of their 'media face', they must have some really weird friends. All of mine would shut my down pretty sharpish if I started sending about being that knobbish on the regular.

longwayoff · 21/07/2021 10:08

Coren is a tiresome child with unaddressed issues. Stop paying him the attention he craves.

Classica · 21/07/2021 10:09

@MissLucyEyelesbarrow

I loathe people who dish it out, but who can't take it. GC makes his living as a provocateur, being rude about other people, but a couple of tweets by Dawn Foster, pointing out the nepotism he has enjoyed, and he celebrates her death? That's unhinged.
Exactly, he's so incredibly thin skinned. So good at poking the bear but cannot cope with the mildest of criticisms aimed in his own direction. So many spectacular public meltdowns.
DrManhattan · 21/07/2021 10:09

He will have a right cry when he reads these comments.

elgreco · 21/07/2021 10:13

Nepotism in Ireland is far worse. I think most people worldwide are prone to it; given a choice between similar ish candidates for a job, most of us would pick the person they have some tie to.

KisstheTeapot14 · 21/07/2021 10:15

The establishment was created by people like him, for people like him. Short of blowing up the Queen I can't see that he would ever suffer any fallout from his actions.

@VladmirsPoutine. ^ Completely ^

My thoughts on Giles: good looking but an arrogant knob.

Sadly the former doesn't compensate for the latter. Shame really.

I hadn't heard of Dawn Foster before, but she sounds great. So we can thank Giles at least for promoting her name.

Reading about her just now also lead me to the wonderful Dog's Trust Freedom Project - friends were suggesting to donate there in her memory.

I know which one I'd rather have a cup of tea and an interesting chat with....

mustlovegin · 21/07/2021 10:15

His casting on that neural- short-circuit-inducing series 'Amazing Hotels' is weird also.

One minute the show is praising the uber luxury in these grand places, the next it tries to display the hardship and 'empathise' with those working there. What exactly are they trying to achieve with this patronising tripe?

You can imagine GC's brain running at 200 miles per hour, trying very hard not to say something inconvenient or non-PC -and failing. It's almost as if he's been stitched up. Ridiculous

Buccanarab · 21/07/2021 10:17

Yabvvvvvu. No one should be cancelled. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and to voice it, whether anyone else agrees with it or not.

And everyone is entitled to suffer the consequences of their actions. It's very enlightening to see how many people are jumping to the defence of a man who not only takes delight in the death of someone else, but who has made accounts to send him themselves antisemitic abuse, made "jokes" about raping and murdering children and sexualises their own daughter.

If a random Mumsnetter started a thread about how their husband had made a child rape joke, or that they'd laughed at the death of a young woman from cancer the cries of "LTB" would be heard from space.

Do you also support the right of those who sent racist abuse to Rashford/Saka/Sancho to hold, voice and share their opinion too?

RavingAnnie · 21/07/2021 10:18

@Bryonyshcmyony

Why would anyone actually WANT someone cancelled?

cancel culture is a scourge.

This.
KisstheTeapot14 · 21/07/2021 10:21

A quick google led to the discovery that I have never heard of Giles Coren and was thinking of Giles Brandreth.

That made my day.

longwayoff · 21/07/2021 10:23

All this 'he is part of the establishment' is twaddle. He's a columnist and occasional TV presenter who knows a few people of influence. If it wasn't for Twitter, nobody would know who he is. He can cancel himself any time he likes by not using it.
