Face masks

Ineke · 20/07/2021 18:29

Having just read a thread about someone asking AIBU to ditch my face mask now that it is no longer the law I am not surprised that there are a few people out there who need it set in stone, in law to do the right thing. Even after we are encouraged, advised and expected to wear masks in crowded indoor spaces, they still think ‘it’s not the law’ so I will do what I want. They have no conscience or care for other the people they put at risk. The Government has made it our responsibility to think how we behave, could we not show them that we can act responsibly or do we really need to be bound by a law which I will lay bets on will be reinstated in the Autumn. As will vaccine passports to gain entry into crowded indoor venues.

I doubt if anything will be said on this that hasn't been said hundreds of times already.

ArnoldJudasRimmer · 20/07/2021 18:40

I do agree with you but yes, there are so many threads on this. From what I've seen, consensus is most people will continue to wear a mask. Luckily, it has been the case when I had to visit a supermarket today. Those without masks were very much the minority.

Maddiemademe · 20/07/2021 18:41

My dp was in town earlier and said 95% of people were still wearing them. Our Council (Plymouth) have requested that everyone please stills wear them due to numbers increasing so seems like most people are being sensible with the advice.

mindutopia · 20/07/2021 18:46

I've been out to the shops a few times this week (more than normal) and everything has carried on as normal here. I haven't seen a single person in shops or anywhere else not wearing a mask. I think most sensible people will still be sensible.

RightOnTheEdge · 20/07/2021 18:48

YABU to start yet another thread about it!
All the posts insulting people who don't want to wear masks are not going to change their minds and this thread will just repeat all the other threads about exactly the same thing.

MercyBooth · 20/07/2021 18:56

OP Were you wearing masks to protect people pre Covid
Covid is not the only killer of the vulnerable.

rubbletrouble · 20/07/2021 18:56

Recent times has shown that the majority people are good people and do actually do the right thing.
I think the ones that are so anti mask anti vaccinate just shout louder, but we know the government like to pass the burden to the public, so they have someone to blame when their terrible, terrible decisions go badly wrong.......must be Joe Public making bad choice AngryAngry deflect away any blame

NigellaSeed · 20/07/2021 19:14

There was already an aibu on masks last week and the result was almost 50/50.

Toomuchspinning · 20/07/2021 19:20

Please, PLEASE, piss off to the Coronavirus board. Have we not had enough armchair lectures on here already?

RuggerHug · 20/07/2021 19:23

People never cease to surprise me with stupidity and selfishness. Legal wording shouldn't come into is something right, moral or decent but here we are. I say cancel the smoking ban!

It may be 50/50 with MN users, thankfully my local area and my families areas shows a very, very different picture with the majority still in masks in the shops.
SchrodingersImmigrant · 20/07/2021 19:31

There will be more facemask threads on aibu soon than actual masks in use....

RampantIvy · 20/07/2021 19:37

I have just had notification on my Facebook feed that garden waste collection has been suspended due to so many refuse collectors self isolating.

There is a thread on MN with posters complaining about shortages in supermarkets.

I suspect the anti mask/anti vaxxers will be the first to complain, because they want their "freedom" and don't realise that their actions affect all of us.

I will continue to wear a mask because I want my freedom.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 20/07/2021 19:43

I’ve seen you saying this on a number of threads. I don’t follow the logic. So just because people weren’t aware on a large scale of a small thing they could do to help previously this means that people can’t care now going forward?

Can you explain your logic please because I’m baffled.

Cam77 · 20/07/2021 19:49

About time members of the government start showing the public they know the meaning of the word “responsibility”.

BillyRaywasapreachersson · 20/07/2021 19:53

I went to the shop earlier and did not wear a mask.If the expectation is that I wear one, it needs to be explicit because I have zero interest in wearing one unless it is mandatory and even then I would prefer not to.

Notwavingbutdrowing3 · 20/07/2021 19:58

Really??? Another judgy post

Most pp are still wearing masks but it's no longer mandatory

I wear my mask each time I go into shops and crowded areas
I'm Cev double vaccinated and am medically exempt as I can only manage 10-15 mins wearing a mask before I overheat and need inhalers. Also I am very deaf with bilateral hearing aids and reply on Lip reading

I do it bc I have to want to be safe but am looking fwd to when I don't and others don't. It's been very isolating . I barely hear a word that people mumble behind their masks . My world has stopped for so long for shielding and never being able to hear anyone. I could cry

Moonface123 · 20/07/2021 20:09

The government have really shot themselves in the foot here. People have become too attached to their masks, like a comfort blanket, and don't want to be weaned off. Similar to alll those working from home who now no longer want to go back. The new so called temporary ways have become too familiar, and most people are addicted to the familiar.

RuggerHug · 20/07/2021 20:15

Exactly rampantivy. Until everyone who can be vaccinated is then people have to keep going. The 'but my fweedom' arseholes (NOT anyone genuinely exempt before I'm hopped off of) are the ones who'll scream the loudest if their refuse isn't collected, there's delays with someone they know getting medical help, or if a cluster of infections in a workplace means there's any possible insecurity regarding their water, electricity, someone to fix their car or boiler. You want rights you accept the responsibility that goes with it.
SchrodingersImmigrant · 20/07/2021 20:30

Until everyone who can be vaccinated is then people have to keep going

Yhey would have to self isolate even if vaccinated, wouldn't they? People with vaccine still get it

RuggerHug · 20/07/2021 20:45

But not as badly.

TerritorialPissings · 20/07/2021 20:47

The government themselves have said there is no proof that face masks prevent transmission, but that they are a tool to keep everyone mindful that there is a pandemic. So you crack on…there are many other better ways you can help stop the spread, but if you think a gaping cheap piece of fabric will do it, that’s great 👍
