Face masks

Having just read a thread about someone asking AIBU to ditch my face mask now that it is no longer the law I am not surprised that there are a few people out there who need it set in stone, in law to do the right thing. Even after we are encouraged, advised and expected to wear masks in crowded indoor spaces, they still think ‘it’s not the law’ so I will do what I want. They have no conscience or care for other the people they put at risk. The Government has made it our responsibility to think how we behave, could we not show them that we can act responsibly or do we really need to be bound by a law which I will lay bets on will be reinstated in the Autumn. As will vaccine passports to gain entry into crowded indoor venues.

So you read a thread then decided to start another one on the exact same thing?

Please use the coronavirus board as there is no AIBU here.

i think people have been looking out for others for quite a while now.....isolating/disatancing/wearing masks....we've had 16 months of something or other. and the vaccine is here ,so plenty have had that, to 'save others'

Mookie81 · 21/07/2021 00:35

@Notwavingbutdrowing3

Really??? Another judgy post

Most pp are still wearing masks but it's no longer mandatory

I wear my mask each time I go into shops and crowded areas
I'm Cev double vaccinated and am medically exempt as I can only manage 10-15 mins wearing a mask before I overheat and need inhalers. Also I am very deaf with bilateral hearing aids and reply on Lip reading

I do it bc I have to want to be safe but am looking fwd to when I don't and others don't. It's been very isolating . I barely hear a word that people mumble behind their masks . My world has stopped for so long for shielding and never being able to hear anyone. I could cry

Please don't feel bad and don't wear it if it causes you this much distress. I've worn a mask since the start but the heatwave at the moment is a trigger for my asthma and I can't wear one at the moment. Being able to breathe freely has felt amazing. Once it cools down and my flare up dies down we will see. If anyone has the cheek to question me about I'll be telling them to bugger off!

Yeah. I think many of us are simply worn out now
HalfShrunkMoreToGo · 21/07/2021 00:43

@BillyRaywasapreachersson

I went to the shop earlier and did not wear a mask.If the expectation is that I wear one, it needs to be explicit because I have zero interest in wearing one unless it is mandatory and even then I would prefer not to.
It is explicit, it has been made explicitly clear that everyone should wear a mask in indoors public spaces, you just can't be fined now if you don't.

Here are just a couple of the explicit statements that have been made in the official briefings making it explicitly clear that we are all expected to wear a mask.

www.gov.uk/government/speeches/pm-statement-at-coronavirus-press-conference-12-july-2021

"We will stick to our plan to lift legal restrictions and to lift social distancing, but we expect and recommend that people wear a face covering in crowded and enclosed spaces where you come into contact with those you don’t normally meet, such as on public transport."

www.gov.uk/government/news/prime-minister-urges-caution-as-england-moves-to-step-4

"The vaccination programme and test, trace and isolate system continue to be the most effective way of reducing transmission, along with practicing good hygiene, keeping spaces well ventilated, and wearing a face covering in enclosed or crowded spaces."

FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 21/07/2021 00:50

It's called freedom of choice.

Like with many things, we all sometimes choose things that others perceive to be dangerous to society.
Plenty of people on MN

Drive a car
Drink alcohol
Take drugs

All can have a detrimental impact on the health of others, in varying degrees.

But the point is we have to respect other people's freedom to choose. And probably best to do it without getting too wound up.

You don't know people's reasons for it wearing a mask, nor are you entitled to know. I'm afraid people spitting and frothing over people not wearing masks will have to get over it

Fl0w3ry · 21/07/2021 00:56

I bet if the people who throw away their masks with glee and/or don't have their jab (I'm talking about through choice, not for health reasons btw) had to sign a waiver beforehand to say they knew they were risking getting serious covid, and therefore would be classed as lower priority for treatment if hospitals became overwhelmed, they would all change their tune.
No doubt the people who throw their masks away will blame Boris from their hospital beds if they end up being one of the unlucky ones who gets serious covid despite maybe having the jabs.
There's a real divide in this country now since covid - the people who take personal responsibilty for themselves and other people, and the people who think they are 'the chosen ones' who think they definately won't get covid seriously and therefore don't give a shit about anyone else.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 21/07/2021 01:07

There is also lots of quite annoying halo wearing too.
And i say that as a vaxxed mask wearer.

MercyBooth · 21/07/2021 01:18

I thought we were wearing masks to protect others.
Every now and then the mask slips!!!!!

MercyBooth · 21/07/2021 01:20

since Covid? Where the fuck have you been for the last eleven years.
Living quite a privileged life if you have only noticed a divide since Covid.

Fl0w3ry · 21/07/2021 01:23

@MercyBooth - no, no privileged life here.
I'm talking about the divide in attitudes around covid - we hadn't heard of covid, masks etc 11 years ago.

Fl0w3ry · 21/07/2021 01:27

@MercyBooth my understanding is we wear masks to protect others and to reduce the viral load slightly for ourselves if we come into contact with it. Therefore reduce our chance of hospitalisation too.

notangelinajolie · 21/07/2021 01:38

I went to Sainsbury's earlier. All staff were wearing masks. I'd say 95% of customers were wearing masks and there was a queue of people outside waiting to disinfect their trolly handles. Once inside, the only people not wearing masks was a man in his 50's with 2 younger men who I presumed were his sons filling a trolly with booze and a young couple in their late teens.

It's clear that the majority of the people I saw this evening think that it's not all over.

BogRollBOGOF · 21/07/2021 04:14

I'm being pretty considerate to the duty first aider by not wearing a mask. I'm also being considerate to people with a range of communication and hearing impairments/ difficulties.

It's bloody depressing that nearly a year after people have suffered wearing masks, a sanctimonious core are still minimising the difficulties and problems that masks cause and are still bullying people about it.

I've gone through vaccination and its side effects. I've had most of a year suffering lonliness from loss of connection with family and friends, some who are still being very withdrawn. I've had my life reduced to servcing the family and pointlessly battling over home learning with a child with SENs while my home is turned into an office. All external routines and motivations stolen for much of the past year.
And some twerps with an over polished halo and sense of self importance are willing to judge me for being selfish because I have the audacity to be out in public with a bare face because months ago, I reached the point where it wasn't worth trying to oblige and having escalating panic attacks reaching the point of self harming every time I had an errand to do. It was reaching a point of aggrophobia or my face, and for the big picture, my face won.

Someone's being selfish here... I'm not convinced it's me. I've given and suffered more than enough already thanks.

And no, you wouldn't suspect that I'm exempt from observation... not until the overwhelm is triggered, and my breathing goes, and my face tickles, and I'm scratching the skin off my face to bleeding to stip the fucking tickling.
45 seconds is my personal best.

Yawn…..

How many more threads do we need? It’s a choice! Allow others their choice and they will allow you your choice too.

OhGiveUp · 21/07/2021 08:47

When I see people in government playing tonsil tennis with their assistant amongst others breaking the rules they put on the electorate, I wonder why I should bloody bother!
Wear a mask, don't wear a mask, it's up to you.

Shall we apply the same restrictions on access to healthcare those people who drink, smoke, have a BMI over 25…all things we have absolute personal control over (in the majority of people)? A flimsy mask which may or may not do anything has been given FAR too much weight against the many other variables that can affect our health. But only Covid matters, right?

I have seen plenty of mask-wearing people filling their trolleys with booze too…it’s so ridiculous, it’s laughable. How about you get some perspective on the efficacy of masks vs the many other risky lifestyle choices that many mask-wearers choose?
Janaih · 21/07/2021 09:02

I'm getting fed up with the assumption that if you are against face coverings you must be an anti vaxxer. I'm double jabbed but will no longer be wearing my flimsy face covering.
They are just a visual reminder than we must remain fearful.

FogHornInTheAttic · 21/07/2021 09:25

Double vaccinated. Will wear if in v busy indoor spaces but otherwise I'm going to be mask free.
