To feel down about UK holiday?

WoahThereNelly · 20/07/2021 08:09

Of course I already realise I am BU when some people don't get holidays at all, have been horribly impacted by covid etc.

Just using this to vent and get some perspective.

Feeling so gutted that we can't go to France to see family we haven't seen in over a year. It looked like we could go, then at the very last minute the rules have changed again and now we can't. We do have a 1 week UK holiday booked but it won't be as lovely, or seeing family, or getting out of this country!

Feels like we've worked all year, through all this rubbish...for nothing...and now it'll be another year again before there's another chance (we only ever get a few days in the other holidays, with longer ones at summer).

Ok, tell me I'm being ridiculous and hopefully I'll feel better about it. Just feeling v sad and flat at the moment.

I'm really looking forward to my UK hols, this is an amazing island to explore, covid has given us the opportunity to do so

FuzzyPuffling · 20/07/2021 08:11

Yes, you're being unreasonable. But you know that.

Essentialironingwater · 20/07/2021 08:12

You're not being ridiculous. We don't have family in France and are gutted we can't go for our yearly trip. I look forward to it all year! We aren't bothering with a UK holiday but are doing some fun things in the local area and have instead invested £££ in a new bed, sheets etc to make our bedroom more hotel like...but it's still not a magical 2-3 weeks escaping and immersing ourselves somewhere different.

Anyway, I'm rambling, but I get it.

emlouwat · 20/07/2021 08:14

I am away in Cornwall and my holiday so far has been a bit crap. Lots of bars and restaurants closed due to no staff. Couldn't get fish and chips last night as staff had to go home. Can't get in in the few places that are open. Wish we hadn't bothered

Essentialironingwater · 20/07/2021 08:14

Just to add I'm also almost a bit gutted we have already always done a couple of UK holidays a year, so it doesn't feel like a new discovery but instead just far more expensive than normal! I had a baby during lockdown, was made redundant, lost two family members and had to move 400 miles for DHs job where I know no one here. Can't wait to finally get somewhere else next year as it's always a light at the end of the tunnel!

Whatinthelord · 20/07/2021 08:14

Your not being ridiculous. It’s hard when you’ve focused on something and looked forward to it.

However your week away will be lovely. I’d throw everything into planning nice things for that holiday and at home. Can you do some special hinge virtually with your french family?

tootingbeclido · 20/07/2021 08:15

Yes its disappointing not to be able to go to France. .but you have a holiday booked in uk..go and enjoy it..where are you going? don't waste it

Cheeseandlobster · 20/07/2021 08:17

@FuzzyPuffling

You absolutely are not being unreasonable. Its perfectly natural to feel hugely disappointed when you have been working hard and really looking forward to something. Coupled with missing out on seeing family that is a huge let down. Yes you have a UK holiday to look forward to and it will be lovely. We have a beautiful country. But if your family will not be there and the weather is not as guaranteed it just isn't what you had your heart set on. I totally get it op
Parky04 · 20/07/2021 08:18

Yep, you are totally ridiculous. If that's all you have to worry about, then you have been incredibly lucky over the past 18 months!

Direstraitsmates · 20/07/2021 08:20

I don't get why people think other countries are better than the UK. We have some of the most beautiful countryside, mountains, loughs and coastlines in the world. The weather is fantastic this summer. Going to a different country doesn't make for a better holiday. Getting there causes more environmental damage. Yabu.

Who said that's all they've had to worry about? I'm sad about lack of holidays and lots worse has happened but it's made me even more focused on enjoying the time I have with my family. I don't see anything wrong with that. Life is not a Pain Olympics.
Roselilly36 · 20/07/2021 08:23

It’s been a really tough time, I miss going abroad too OP, so I can empathise. A holiday is what you make it though isn’t it. We are having a few days away, we have all sorts of things planned, taking gifts, no cooking unless we want to. Just going to relax & enjoy the change of scenery. I hope you have a lovely holiday, get on tripadvisor and make some plans, it might cheer you up Flowers and yes I agree, we are lucky to have a holiday this year.

Silverparting · 20/07/2021 08:23

We have always gone to the UK and in 2019 after another holiday with bad weather, I promised my teens we'd go abroad, but it hasn't happened due to the pandemic.

It's disappointing, but last year we went to Bournemouth, lucked out on the weather and had a blast.

We are booked for Cornwall and plan to make the most of it this year. Just grateful to be away.

Hope you enjoy it.

MsTSwift · 20/07/2021 08:25

I feel exactly the same accept I am unreasonable. We try to travel environmentally by train etc.

To me a proper holiday is endless warm days and evenings and different preferably Mediterranean culture food etc. Even if parts of uk lovely it’s not that. We went for evening stroll and dinner in our nice city in the heat last night and got hassled by drunks. When we did the same in southern Italy families of all ages were out and about.

Did you read the OP? She is going to miss out on seeing her family. No beautiful countryside in the world can make up for that. And as for the "fantastic summer weather" ... 😂.

Because Cornwall is having a big outbreak following G7 and an influx of visitors.

Op I’m not going/planning a holiday but live in a beautiful part of the U.K. so I’m making the most of any days off.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 20/07/2021 08:26

I don't think its the lack of holiday... its just the last thing in a line of disappointments.

ilovesooty · 20/07/2021 08:27

I'd be gutted too.

In answer to a PP we get about a couple of weeks worth of decent weather in this country and it's impossible to plan for. Most countries are better than ours from the weather point of view. You pay through the nose for UK holidays and I wouldn't want to waste the money.

Ipanemama · 20/07/2021 08:28

You’re not being U. I get it, we’ve enjoyed many hols in UK but have family in Europe we haven’t seen since Oct 2019. Would have loved to go over this summer and see them, a change of scenery and all that.

MirandaMarple · 20/07/2021 08:29

YANBU on the family front.

Since I started camping about 7 years ago, I've never seen so much of the UK. I love nothing more than looking at a map of the UK and deciding where I want to go to next. Easily in my car and it's cheap!

Zilla1 · 20/07/2021 08:29

I can see it's disappointing but presumably you've worked hard all year to provide for your family in whose company you enjoy spending time. You might not enjoy a UK-based holiday as much as family in France but presumably the test is whether you could enjoy it more than staying at home or the available alternatives.

Good luck.

Direstraitsmates · 20/07/2021 08:29

'Did you read the OP? She is going to miss out on seeing her family. No beautiful countryside in the world can make up for that. And as for the "fantastic summer weather 😂'

😂 (obnoxious laugh right back at you if we are being unpleasant)

User5827372728 · 20/07/2021 08:31

The problem is the weather here is so unreliable!

So could have a lovely warm week or pissing down with rain everyday!

And in the run up I’m constantly checking the weather

FakeColinCaterpillar · 20/07/2021 08:32

We don’t go abroad in the summer holidays because it’s too hot for us usually. But I’ve cancelled 3 other holidays now since last March.
I had 2 trips in the U.K. planned but we haven’t gone ahead.
We are going out but being cautious still, so no trips away. So bored.

hettie · 20/07/2021 08:33

@Direstraitsmates because the weather can turn and be unreliable (it could be sheeting it down and 15 degrees in 3 wks time). The costs are outrageous for comparible accomodation (even factoring flights). Because customer service is very often poor, bored teenagers with not a manager in sight. By comparison all European tourism areas I've been to would never put up with the slow service and crap food that I've often experienced here. AND to top it all the fucking attitude to emits/grockles ...I am from the westcoutry but don't currently live there. The cats bums faces I've gotten when I've walked to off the beaten track beaches) river swims because I'm not local Honestly... I really remember how full on summers would be, harder to get around etc but I also never understood the animosity...
