To feel down about UK holiday?

WoahThereNelly · 20/07/2021 08:09

Of course I already realise I am BU when some people don't get holidays at all, have been horribly impacted by covid etc.

Just using this to vent and get some perspective.

Feeling so gutted that we can't go to France to see family we haven't seen in over a year. It looked like we could go, then at the very last minute the rules have changed again and now we can't. We do have a 1 week UK holiday booked but it won't be as lovely, or seeing family, or getting out of this country!

Feels like we've worked all year, through all this rubbish...for nothing...and now it'll be another year again before there's another chance (we only ever get a few days in the other holidays, with longer ones at summer).

Ok, tell me I'm being ridiculous and hopefully I'll feel better about it. Just feeling v sad and flat at the moment.

You're being rediculous. Also if the only thing you feel you work for in your life is holidays then you need to re examine what you're doing with your life.

Cowbells · 21/07/2021 10:24

YANBU. You're allowed to feel disappointed at broken plans and missing family.

But you can have a great time in UK and a proper holiday. We went to the Lakes. Baking hot weather. We climbed some mountains, ate in some Michelin starred restaurants, went on steam boats, walked to waterfalls etc. All around people were paddle boarding, wild swimming, kayaking, picknicking, eating ice creams, watching the wildlife. All in the sunshine. It was idyllic.

If you wouldn’t be disappointed at missing a holiday then you obviously only go on shit holidays.

That's lovely! I'm so pleased for you.

When we went to the Lakes last year it pissed down raising every day and I don't think the temperature broke through 20' once. The lakes were only even mildly comfortable to swim in wearing wetsuits. It was slightly less idyllic.

I've been to the Lakes many times but they are very much an outdoor holiday, and the unpredictability of the weather can make or break it as a family holiday, and it's undeniable that UK weather in summer is a lot less predictable than in some other countries without a maritime climate.

We increasingly choose our UK holidays to be weather-proof in one way or another, which is a limiting factor to the kind of holidays you can go on in the UK.

JassyRadlett · 21/07/2021 10:38

I have BA vouchers to use before Easter 2022.

I'm really hoping BA extends this as before Easter 2022 is starting to feel increasingly unachievable to use them up....

Neondisco · 21/07/2021 11:29

@NakedAttraction are you ok hun? When did I say I wouldn't be dissapointed to miss a holiday... Oh OK nowhere.

But I have way more going on in my life that I enjoy than juat holidays. To feel its the only thing you work for is in my opinion sad and indicates that op maybe needs a bit more to enjoy or look forward to.

Clydesider · 21/07/2021 12:37

Many of us can't afford even to go on a UK holiday this year as prices have shot up so much. Enjoy your break.

NakedAttraction · 21/07/2021 12:55

You told the OP they were being ridiculous….

I’m sure there are lots of people on here who only work so their family can have a few extra luxuries, such as nice holidays.

sadperson16 · 21/07/2021 13:11

hun is a bit not OK

Right so what has that got to do with me apperently being not dissapointed to miss a holiday and therefore going on shit holidays? You're making stuff up just to argue and making yourself look daft. Seems like you're just looking for a fight. Bit embarrassing for you.

Actually you are the embarrassing one. Did you miss the bit where the op won't be seeing her family. Or is that 'rediculous' too?

I miss France too. We were going last year for the first time in 5 years as we'd had a few seaside holidays here when the kids were young, and and obviously haven't yet made it over there.

5foot5 · 21/07/2021 15:09

I am away in Cornwall and my holiday so far has been a bit crap. Lots of bars and restaurants closed due to no staff. Couldn't get fish and chips last night as staff had to go home. Can't get in in the few places that are open. Wish we hadn't bothered

We came back from a fortnight in Cornwall at the weekend and had a lovely, lovely time.

Some restaurants were short staffed but didn't see any actually closed. Most attractions had to be pre-booked but TBH that helped I think as they were not overwhelmingly crowded and the most we had to book was 2 or 3 days ahead (booked some for the first week before we left home).

Coastal walks lovely and even the beach we went to wasn't too crowded.

Mind you maybe we were lucky that most schools hadn't broken up. Noticed lots more people heading in to Cornwall than there had been when we arrived

YANBU over family.

But I’m irritated with those whinging that they can’t go abroad and instead are stuck with boring old Cornwall bla bla bla.

To those people, I say don’t fucking go then. You can have a year without a holiday. But thanks for booking everywhere up and driving the prices up to 3k for a holiday to Cornwall for a family of 3 for a holiday you don’t even want.

This isn’t aimed at you OP.

reannneeee · 21/07/2021 15:16

I’ve had to bite my tongue with a tone deaf friend who is currently in The Lakes who has constantly been moaning about it in our group chat. She usually goes to the Greek Islands.

She never wanted this holiday. Even when she was booking it with her partner she’d go on about how it’s not her thing, she doesn’t want The Lakes bla bla bla.

But apparently it’s her god given right for a holiday Confused

pleasedonttextmyman · 21/07/2021 15:50

You can have a year without a holiday.

but why should you.

Life is too short! Technically kids and you can have a year without clubs, without sports, without hobbies, without restaurants, seeing friends. Pretty grim though.

So Cornwall is better than nothing, people need a break, but it's not the same. It's a staycation, not a real holiday for most of us.

People are allowed to be upset to be forced to stay local.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 21/07/2021 15:54

I can't gwt ovwr the satycation being for acountry rather than home and day trips🙈

I also don't understand why holidays ahould be abroad otherwise it's not holidays. Days off especially spent away from home are by definition holidays😂

I also need to see what's up with Cornwall. Never been. 🙈

pleasedonttextmyman · 21/07/2021 15:57

not really. When you go away for the weekend (in Cornwall, Devon, Scotland or wherever you want) you don't say you've on holiday do you?

I don't think people SHOULD go abroad, I don't care what people prefer, but for me a holiday is away. We have enough day or weekends trip during the year. Nothing wrong with Cornwall, but it's there all year, I don't need a holiday to get there.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 21/07/2021 16:00

I do Blush

reannneeee · 21/07/2021 16:01

@pleasedonttextmyman

But why book a holiday knowing you’re going to hate it?

Being a bit down about it, I absolutely get. But there seem to be people that are booking holidays knowing they’ll hate it just for the sake of saying they’ve been on holiday. It’s utterly bizarre to me.

I’ve only ever been abroad once in my life. Staycations are a proper holiday to me. My grandparent’s crickety old caravan in Abersoch was a proper holiday to me and I was gutted when it was sold. I still want to try and take my own child back to that particular caravan park for a week because as a kid it was my happy place, and into my young adulthood. I’m struggling to afford that at the minute.

It is a proper holiday to many people who can’t even afford it. So I do struggle to have sympathy for those sitting in villas in Cornwall miserable they aren’t in Tenerife, tbh.

reannneeee · 21/07/2021 16:02

And equally, somebody who doesn’t even have somewhere to live at all would probably struggle to have sympathy for me being upset I can’t take my kid to the Welsh coast for a week.

It’s life.
