To feel down about UK holiday?

Of course I already realise I am BU when some people don't get holidays at all, have been horribly impacted by covid etc.

Just using this to vent and get some perspective.

Feeling so gutted that we can't go to France to see family we haven't seen in over a year. It looked like we could go, then at the very last minute the rules have changed again and now we can't. We do have a 1 week UK holiday booked but it won't be as lovely, or seeing family, or getting out of this country!

Feels like we've worked all year, through all this rubbish...for nothing...and now it'll be another year again before there's another chance (we only ever get a few days in the other holidays, with longer ones at summer).

Ok, tell me I'm being ridiculous and hopefully I'll feel better about it. Just feeling v sad and flat at the moment.
@korawick12345 you've been pretty unlucky as the ready of the country has done nothing but whinge about the heat 😆. You might do well to holiday in a different part of the UK in that case
TBF I have only seen or heard complaints about the heat in the last 3 or 4 days! Hardly a long hot summer!

DGFB · 20/07/2021 10:11

I’m with you OP, feel exactly the same

Essentialironingwater · 20/07/2021 10:17

Why are people banging on about a war that ended before they were born? My father grew up in two horrific wars as part of the decolonisation of Africa and he's still upset he can't go abroad this summer!

Why can't we want to see our families and have fun experiences? Have you never had a moan about something or do you constantly walk around marvelling at how lucky you are to have basic human needs met and never want for anything more? Hmm

OhYouBadBadKitten · 20/07/2021 10:18

This might be a daft suggestion - have you considered meeting up with your family in a third country if that's possible for you op?

Feelingbad2 · 20/07/2021 10:21

I’m gutted that we can’t afford a U.K. holiday

lurker101 · 20/07/2021 10:24

You’re not being unreasonable! We have family abroad that we haven’t seen since 2019, so I understand your struggle. Similarly our Christmas plans were cancelled when London went into Tier 4, I was so upset. It’s the disappointment and that feeling of being so close, yet so far that’s so tough to swallow. However, now that you can’t go to France it’s time to put your game face on and look forward to your UK holiday. That’s what we did to salvage Christmas and we had a fantastic time, whilst it was very different to I imagined it was a brilliant few days. Flowers

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 20/07/2021 10:27

I kind of get you OP.

We've a week at the coast in a caravan next week. The weather is looking dodgy, many places will be shut so eating out could be a wash out. And yes I'm one of those lazy MNers who does not believe self catering your own meals without the mod cons of your own kitchen is a rest.

So there's a high chance it's going to be same shit different surroundings Sad

Noterook · 20/07/2021 10:27

Feels like we've worked all year, through all this rubbish...for nothing...

Don't you work for money to pay bills?

You aren't being unreasonable to be disappointed to not being able to see family, no. I do feel that it's been really tough on people, and it was cruel giving light at the end of the tunnel and then taking it away. That said hope your holiday here is good.

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 20/07/2021 10:33

You know during the war right they didn’t have holidays?

/////

Hear that, people? You've been told. Don't complain about anything again, ever, unless they didn't have that problem in the war Confused

BigSandyBalls2015 · 20/07/2021 10:34

It’s been a crap summer in SE ... rain and low temperatures. It’s only end of last week and this week it’s improved and maybe an odd day in May.

We’re off to Devon in sept ... obv hoping for nice weather but a change of scene will be fab. We don’t have little kids though so I know that Mayes a big difference.

HarebrightCedarmoon · 20/07/2021 10:34

I do sympathise and I felt the same when our France holiday was cancelled, as it did seem, for a few short weeks, that we might be able to go. Yes I know other people have it worse but it doesn't mean that we aren't allowed to feel upset and disappointed. We've had many nice holidays in the UK, but you know, variety is the spice of life, might be nice to be allowed to leave these isles once in a while, and France is only a couple of hours away for us - we weren't asking to go far!

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 20/07/2021 10:35

We'll make the most of next week, but it will not be a holiday that rejuvenates me and I can't help but feel short changed.

/// Fluff you've summed up how I'm feeling perfectly. And the thought of packing clothes for every eventuality weather wise is making my heart sink a little.

MyDcAreMarvel · 20/07/2021 10:40

I am sure the families with unvaccinated CEV children will swap with you. Many can’t even have day trips now thanks to the cancelling of restrictions.

dottiedodah · 20/07/2021 10:42

I dont think we can compare 21st century Britain to the war surely? By the same token we can not expect fresh healthy food ,any treats at all and a petrol shortage! Lets not confuse a couple of weeks abroad as some sort of insane luxury!

Slimmingstar · 20/07/2021 10:42

We’ve booked to go to Croatia in a fortnight for honeymoon. Hoping and praying it can go ahead…….

Whimsy14 · 20/07/2021 10:49

20Direstraitsmates I don't get why people think other countries are better than the UK. We have some of the most beautiful countryside, mountains, loughs and coastlines in the world
Er, no. Compared with France (The Alps, The Côte d'Azur, the Med, the miles of vineyards, the Rhône, the Loire, etc), the UK falls somewhat behind.
Once you factor in missing family, it's not surprising that the OP is upset.

alsonotmyname · 20/07/2021 11:00

I hear you op, I'm currently trying my best to get excited for an upcoming uk holiday, looks like thunder and rain all week in a crappy apartment that cost more than a break abroad. No spontaneity as everything needs to be prebooked, and no meals out as it's so expensive here and the food is often mediocre.
At least as I'm taking the car I can fit in wellies and raincoats as well as sun cream and sandals. Trying to adjust my mindset so the dc don't pick up on my disappointment

BooksChocolateAndSleep · 20/07/2021 11:03

You're not being unreasonable, I'm pissed off as well. I hate holidaying in the UK it's just shit, the weather is unpredictable and everywhere is just so busy. The beaches are mobbed, no where to park, cottages etc are expensive when you don't know if you're going to have sunshine or pissing down rain. I look forward to my holiday abroad every year. This year we are off to Cornwall to visit friends and they have said how crazy busy it is already, I'd rather just not go!

Oh and I detest camping!!!

BooksChocolateAndSleep · 20/07/2021 11:05

@Direstraitsmates the weather isn't fantastic this summer, this is the only decent week (it's been raining and grey for weeks). Then because as a country we aren't prepared for this weather everywhere is unbearable because we don't have air conditioning in our houses.

Give me a villa with air conditioning and a pool then a hire car for exploring and I'm happy!!

adamant8 · 20/07/2021 11:08

YABVVU. There are some beautiful parts of the UK and fabulous holidays to be had.

Twoforthree · 20/07/2021 11:10

We have had a holiday in the uk and have another one planned later. They are nice - but it’s not the same.

I appreciate I’m luckier than many, and I really enjoy the uk as well for extra breaks, but I don’t blame myself for feeling a bit let down that I won’t be getting a “main” holiday with guaranteed weather. Here it’s either too hot and we are not equipped for that with air con etc, or it’s too cold. There is hardly ever any in between with sun. Maybe all clouds!

adamant8 · 20/07/2021 11:10

@BooksChocolateAndSleep just stay home then and make it slightly less crowded for everyone else! I can’t wait until the “holidays abroad” crowd can go abroad again and leave the rest of us and our lovely UK holidays in peace!

BooksChocolateAndSleep · 20/07/2021 11:13

@adamant8 I would love to stay home trust me but my kids need a holiday somewhere and a change of scenery.

I just begrudge squeezing onto a beach, having possibly crap weather and then going back to a boiling hot house if the weather is nice.

ohthatbloodycat · 20/07/2021 11:14

YANBU. A holiday here just isn't the same.
