Should I just eat the Chinese?

I just had a knock on the door and when I opened it a woman was standing there with a bag. She handed it over to me, said thank you and disappeared down my drive. All I said in reply was ‘thank you’ too and closed the door. It didn’t really register until she left and when I realised it was as food my first thought was that DP had ordered me something (he has been out all day and has eaten with DS and knows I’m a bit hungry). I asked - he didn’t.

I opened then bag - Chinese food. Well, prawn crackers on the top at least. I haven’t delved into the rest. I don’t know what to do with it! No idea where it came from (definitely not deliveroo for example), or how it’s ended up here. Not a tourist area. Not close to the park. Admittedly we don’t have a house number as it blew off in the most most recent heavy winds and it’s not replaced yet. But each of my neighbours do!

So - what do I do? I’m not going neighbour trotting to find out the recipient so do I eat it or leave it on the kitchen service?

There's nearly always a menu in the bag

TheWitchersWife · 18/07/2021 21:14

My locals usually put a menu in the bag or receipt in the bag. Worth a look.

Planty13 · 18/07/2021 21:15

I would absolutely go knocking on the neighbours. Just two houses either side. I don’t know why you wouldn’t. YABU

TrixieThunder · 18/07/2021 21:16

Okay, I will fully open the bag and see if there’s anything else to go by!

Lockheart · 18/07/2021 21:17

I'd knock either side but if it wasn't theirs I wouldn't go looking for the recipient down the entire street.

See if there's a menu in the bag.

MrsSkylerWhite · 18/07/2021 21:17

Is knock on adjacent neighbour’s doors. Bit mean not to.
Wouldn’t eat it: presumably the customer will ask where their food is and they’ll look into it. If you’ve eaten it, they may expect you to pay.

cookiesandcreamm · 18/07/2021 21:18

I would knock couple houses either side!
If not spoken for, I'd eat Smile

It's happened to us before, we rang the takeaway and complained we hadn't received our food and they said they had delivered. Half hour later neighbour knocks on door with it!

IveNameChangedAgain2020 · 18/07/2021 21:18

So I once was delivered food when I hadn't ordered it (I had to check because I order delivery A LOT).

Anyway, I left it outside the door as I assumed someone would come and grab it - instead I had about 10 people knock on my door telling me I'd left my delivery outside. No one came to claim it.

Should have bloody eaten it. It was a posh kebab and I would have devoured it!

Essentialironingwater · 18/07/2021 21:18

Are you in the centre of a busy city or a quieter town? I've only ever had about 2-3 Chinese places deliver to me wherever I've lived so might just be easier to ring and ask if they've delivered to X street and if so it's a mistake. I know it's a faff and not your problem but better than an irked neighbour coming banging in an hour!

Bringithome · 18/07/2021 21:19

Maybe a neighbour ordered it - doesnt matter. Id eat it

TrixieThunder · 18/07/2021 21:20

I was really trying to look in it anymore but I’ve now broken the bag a little more and no menu. Absolutely nothing to say where it has come from.

This happened to me in reverse a few months ago. A takeaway delivery was delivered to our neighbours a few doors up. They accepted it as they had also ordered food just not from the same place.

I rang the restaurant as it said delivered on the app and I was halfway through the call when the neighbours knocked. Despite telling them we now had the food they told us they had to send us another delivery as they couldn't garuntee the food hadn't been tampered with whilst in the neighbours property. We ended up with a heck of a lot of food. Grin

TrixieThunder · 18/07/2021 21:23

It’s a city area so we have around 10+ Chinese restaurants (according to deliveroo) in our area. I did check with one neighbour now as she’s in the garden but it was a no. I don’t know about the other and I don’t think I’ve ever spoken to them in the entire time I’ve been here. I will brave things up and go and ask then

Saw this and thought you might like it op!

TheChiefJo · 18/07/2021 21:25

If you've checked with the nearest neighbours, just eat it.

TrixieThunder · 18/07/2021 21:27

I am too coward to ask the other neighbours so I have sent DP to ask the question. I spotted chicken balls on my look through for a menu. My mouth is watering.

So no answer, no lights on. Unlikely to be them. I’m really conflicted now. It’s calling out for me to eat it but what if someone does come to claim it? Should I give it 30 mins and if not collection it’s mine?

OP posts:
cookiesandcreamm · 18/07/2021 21:37

Yeah I would hang on abit to safe 😂

As above they will be sent another takeaway anyway. It was the deliver drivers error and they cannot confirm you have not tampered with it. Eat it and feel no guilt, in 30 minutes the chicken balls will be cold and you'll regret not munching them. Smile
Lipz · 18/07/2021 21:38

I hate when this happens, you're sitting there waiting to see if the delivery driver comes back. Then if you eat it and they do come back you'll feel a fool. We had a pizza delivered to the wrong house, your man retrieved it from wrong house and tried giving it to us, tbh I'm not fussy regarding food but I was thinking of them picking bits off it and eating it. They place sent us a fresh order. I'd give it 30 mins then eat it. The owner of it should have rang the take away by then.

blinkthreetimes · 18/07/2021 21:38

I would eat it all and then turn off all my lights and lock the door and never answer it again.

Thewiseoneincognito · 18/07/2021 21:39

I’d be worried about it being poisoned. No chance I could eat food of unknown origin.

Lipz · 18/07/2021 21:40

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Noterook · 18/07/2021 21:41

They won't take it back anyway now it's been delivered. They will either refund or resend whoever ordered it, but even if you found out where it was from it would end up in the bin! You've waited a decent amount of time, I'd eat it if you want it (unless you are suspicious that it has dubious origins).

GreyhoundG1rl · 18/07/2021 21:41

Didn't it come with the receipt attached? Ours always do Confused
