Should I just eat the Chinese?

I just had a knock on the door and when I opened it a woman was standing there with a bag. She handed it over to me, said thank you and disappeared down my drive. All I said in reply was ‘thank you’ too and closed the door. It didn’t really register until she left and when I realised it was as food my first thought was that DP had ordered me something (he has been out all day and has eaten with DS and knows I’m a bit hungry). I asked - he didn’t.

I opened then bag - Chinese food. Well, prawn crackers on the top at least. I haven’t delved into the rest. I don’t know what to do with it! No idea where it came from (definitely not deliveroo for example), or how it’s ended up here. Not a tourist area. Not close to the park. Admittedly we don’t have a house number as it blew off in the most most recent heavy winds and it’s not replaced yet. But each of my neighbours do!

So - what do I do? I’m not going neighbour trotting to find out the recipient so do I eat it or leave it on the kitchen service?

Maybe I'm weird but I would be to paranoid to eat food that was wrongfully delivered to my door and had no menu or clue where it came from.
I would be worried it was contaminated or something. Obviously unlikely to be but still

TheKeatingFive · 18/07/2021 23:48

I’d be too swept away by the thrill of free food to worry too much Grin

I was a student for a long time. The lure of free food will never go away.

vodkaredbullgirl · 18/07/2021 23:55

You not the neighbour who nicked their take away, are you? Smile

xsquared · 18/07/2021 23:59

I hope you enjoyed your free food @TrixieThunder. Probably an abandoned attempt to deliver to the right address by the driver?

Anyway, this reminded me of a time when a Just Eat/Deliveroo driver dropped a huge box of pizza on the ground in our cul de sac as they parked up to deliver it. Unfortunately, the actual pizza also made contact with the ground, so they abandoned it there! Our neighbour spotted what happened so went over to claim it!

rach2713 · 19/07/2021 00:25

I hope you are the neighbour that took the takeaway. What's the bets this story will be in the paper Grin

ohthatbloodycat · 19/07/2021 00:35

I regret reading this thread ... I'm on a low calorie diet and absolutely starving now Grin

Dddccc · 19/07/2021 01:15

Omg your neighbour is on mumsnet foaming about her neighbour stealing her sweet and sour chicken balls

Maggiesfarm · 19/07/2021 01:16

When I read the thread title, I thought someone had found a new way of committing genocide. I was about to ask what the Chinese have ever done to you.

There's another thread running at the moment in which a person expecting a meal delivery realises that it has gone to a neighbour. Is that you?

EmeraldShamrock · 19/07/2021 01:26

Yep a picture of the leftovers will do.

GrandmaAli · 19/07/2021 01:29

What's a 'posh' kebab?

SourAppleChew · 19/07/2021 01:44

I’m finding it hard to believe that you wouldn’t immediately tell them you’d not ordered. Seems a rather convenient mistake. 😂

Anyusernameleft · 19/07/2021 02:25

Maybe read @MumofSpud post.... about neighbour taking her chinese takeout delivery last night....

NeverRTFT · 19/07/2021 03:15

I think there's also an active thread on here tonight about someone whose neighbours have nicked their takeaway...

SmallPrawnEnergy · 19/07/2021 07:04

Can people not tell the other thread is a piss take? Hmm

SarahBop · 19/07/2021 09:12

I think the awkward thing would be when the restaurant knock again to say they've given it by mistake. I mean obviously you'd expect them not to take it back to reheat and redeliver Grin but I do think they will knock and say we're sorry we delivered wrong and expect you not to have eaten it...!!

Maireas · 19/07/2021 09:28

Indeed. They must have pelted up that drive like Usain Bolt.
KarmaStar · 19/07/2021 09:32

There's no way you didn't instantly know there was a hot food delivery in that bag and it wasn't meant for your house and you know it.
You should have refused to take it so the delivery person could double check the correct address.
Then you come on mn to validate you eating someone's dinner that they paid for.
At least be honest about it .

Lipz · 19/07/2021 09:56

The op did say she thought her dh may have ordered something.

The other thread about being the neighbour is a joke, a very obvious one at that 🙄🙄🙄🙄

greenplasticbag · 19/07/2021 10:48

I didn't realise people took offence to a particular way of describing food. I too will think twice now. Always ordering a full English of a weekend. Tut tut me.

Oh yeah, some people take offence at EVERYTHING Wink

Makes you wonder how they make it through the day tbh.

Zwellers · 19/07/2021 18:52

Yet again some people on this thread are incapable of realising just because something happens in their area it doesn't happen in others. I have never once had a menu come with a chinese. Why would I need the menu from the place I have just order from. I totally now want a Chinese though.

whynotwhatknot · 19/07/2021 19:22

i always say having a chinese italian whatever-its not offensive

did anyone ever come back for it @TrixieThunder

Lulola · 19/07/2021 19:36

If this happened to me I would immediately eat it and if the driver came back I would explain how I knocked on all the neighbours doors/posted on the village Facebook and someone claimed it so that they didn’t blame me.

If it offends Chinese/Italian/Whatever people; it's offensive. What's not to understand?
