Should I just eat the Chinese?

I just had a knock on the door and when I opened it a woman was standing there with a bag. She handed it over to me, said thank you and disappeared down my drive. All I said in reply was ‘thank you’ too and closed the door. It didn’t really register until she left and when I realised it was as food my first thought was that DP had ordered me something (he has been out all day and has eaten with DS and knows I’m a bit hungry). I asked - he didn’t.

I opened then bag - Chinese food. Well, prawn crackers on the top at least. I haven’t delved into the rest. I don’t know what to do with it! No idea where it came from (definitely not deliveroo for example), or how it’s ended up here. Not a tourist area. Not close to the park. Admittedly we don’t have a house number as it blew off in the most most recent heavy winds and it’s not replaced yet. But each of my neighbours do!

So - what do I do? I’m not going neighbour trotting to find out the recipient so do I eat it or leave it on the kitchen service?

some of these comments are akin to the banter defence, ie that's not bullying/harassment, that's just banter, can't you take a joke.
so, we'll call food what we like, who cares what actual chinese people think or feel; who cares about them, anyway there's more of us than them, what they gonna do about it.

There's no way you didn't instantly know there was a hot food delivery in that bag and it wasn't meant for your house and you know it.
You should have refused to take it so the delivery person could double check the correct address.
Then you come on mn to validate you eating someone's dinner that they paid for.
At least be honest about it .

Yes a perfect storm of events AND no receipt, no menu, no labelled food packaging. Just trying to justify being a greedy CF.

My deliver my last week was not my food - they said our name and followed our delivery instructions, but it was another delivery from the same restaurant. Contacted them and they resent ours (hour delay though cus it was then their busy time). Got to try loads of new food - it was great

@blinkthreetimes

Just eat the food. But it’s dishonest and you know it, but if you can live with it it’s just food.

Oh ffs it’s some prawn crackers not stealing money from someone’s granny

Except the order will be deducted from the driver's wage for not delivering it to the right address.
magsbagsfags · 19/07/2021 21:50

@TrixieThunder did you make it through the night?!

EmeraldShamrock · 20/07/2021 00:45

@SchmeatWave21 You are joking, right?
You couldn't be more offensive, well given your updated posts you managed it.
I bet there is no stopping your racist attitude once you get going, following up as a racism apologist. Angry

@Zwellers

Yet again some people on this thread are incapable of realising just because something happens in their area it doesn't happen in others. I have never once had a menu come with a chinese. Why would I need the menu from the place I have just order from. I totally now want a Chinese though.
We always get one, whether we pick up our Indian or Chinese, or whether it's delivered. I always think it's odd. As you say, you must already have one, or you wouldn't have been able to order your food!

Oh ye disbelievers..

We've had uber eats and now deliveroo drivers practically throw other peoples food at us on multiple occasions in the last few months (as both only started delivering here in the last few months).

I now know it is ALL for the same house number, but on a pedestrian access street nearby, you have to come up my road to get to it, but turn left not right...

First time however, OH answered the door distracted by something else, took the bag he was offered and the driver was gone before he realised it was a McDonalds bag and not the amazon delivery we were expecting.

We couldn't contact ubereats to tell them, we contacted mcdonalds, and they actually sent out one of their staff members to the right address with a replacement order (and we ate the free mcdonalds, stoners order a LOT of mcdonalds :D :D )

Now we are ready for it and wave at drivers and say 'nono you want over there.... ---> ' but first time was a shock.

Asides from the mcdonalds which was easy to identify though, very few takeaways round here put a menu in the bag. They are all on deliveroo/just eat/ubereats and have their own websites, they've no need of printed menus!

Loads of people have had this issue going back years but much more prevalent during the pandemic because lots of times all that happens is the doorbell goes and they've opened the door to a bag of food. Unless, as you say, it's mcdonalds the bag is usually unbranded and usually no menu.

I don't know if I can mention other forums but one sub forum on another forum is like AIBU but more American curse words in the title and on there, there were numerous posts every day a while ago basically asking if they can eat food that's been left on their doorstep.

EmeraldShamrock · 20/07/2021 19:55

I genuinely wouldn't take it without checking with others in the house, it has a knock on affect for the delivery driver and the companies reputation.
I recently had a delivery of donuts threw at me, I called to the driver as he walked away, he was very grateful and used the phone number on his app.

Ohsugarhoneyicetea · 20/07/2021 20:19

The opportunity to be a decent human being was when the stranger at your door was handing you something and you didn't know what it was or who it was for. A simple question would have cleared that up. So fill your boots.

blueshoes · 20/07/2021 20:59

@FiddlefigOnTheRoof

Thanks *@alexdgr8*. My comments on this have never gone down well but as a Chinese person it makes me cringe all over when I hear people talking about a Chinese. I always naturally refer to an Indian takeaway, or ‘shall we get some Italian food’ etc. So even if it’s normal, maybe people should think about how it makes others feel.
This.
EmeraldShamrock · 21/07/2021 01:21

@FiddlefigOnTheRoof I'm sorry you had to experience it repeatedly and have a pp continually deny it is offensive.

Marriedatfirstyear · 21/07/2021 23:24

Ordered a takeaway at the same time as neighbour once. When motorbike came, I went out and got it, only to realise after he'd left that it wasn't my order. Just then second scooter turns up and neighbour and I went out but I got to the scooter first. Tool my order and handed neighbour his. He was non the wiser and thought our takeaways had been delivered at the same time. I didn't touch or taste anything and didn't want it going to waste so didn't say anything.

Also, an ex once phoned me after eating his meal to thank me for sending the takeaway, except I hadn't and it was a wrong address. Never did fond out whom it was meant for.

omgthepain · 21/07/2021 23:48

@TrixieThunder
This happend to me about 2 weeks after my Nanna died we got a Chinese delivered and there was a note saying "a little treat for you at a difficult time" like a randome act of kindness

All my favourite things but to this day I have no idea who ordered it
