my bf feeds his dog pasta

hi namechanged. i don’t live with my bf btw!
when i go round his house, i obviously see him feeding his dogs. most of the time, he has pots of uneaten pasta from the night before. this will usually have meat, tomato sauce etc on it. he puts a lot on top of their usual dog food, they seem healthy enough and i guess ‘back then’ people would feed their dogs their scraps, but this just seems a bit wrong?
not looking for advice etc just wanted to know if i’m right in thinking he shouldn’t do this?

It's what Italian dogs eat Grin
My friend in the UK has 2 dogs and they've never had proper dog food. I think as long as you're not giving them the doggy equivalent of a KFC it's ok.
My cat's favourite foods used to be grated cheese and melon. (not together)

Do you not have much going on?

Nothing a bit more pressing than worrying a bloke pops a bit of pasta on top of the dog's dog food?

Secondbellini · 13/07/2021 13:16

As long as they also eat dog food I don’t see what the issue is.

Dogs have evolved to digest carbs as part of the domestication process.

NeedNewKnees · 13/07/2021 13:16

Isn’t that the bonus of having a dog?

NeedNewKnees · 13/07/2021 13:16

(I feed ours to the hens)

lol, actually no i’m not doing much right now! baby asleep, bf asleep, not much else to do! i wouldn’t have a problem if it was a bit, but it’s huge amounts, like more than a large portion you would get in a restaurant ConfusedGrin

Dogs have a shorter digestive tract so are less prone to food poisoning.

As long as there's no onion or spices in it then it's fine. A quick google will tell you so.

Acrasia · 13/07/2021 13:18

I don’t know much about dogs, but aren’t onions, which might be in the tomato sauce, poisonous to dogs? Or is that just when they are raw?

lastqueenofscotland · 13/07/2021 13:18

Given that dogs eat actual shit without much issue I think some pasta left out for a few hours really isn’t an issue

KindergartenKop · 13/07/2021 13:19

Dogs eat actual poo OP. Their tummies can cope with some slightly off bolognese.

Dogs eat shit and dead animals for fun, I think they'll be OK with some tepid pasta!

x2boys · 13/07/2021 13:19

My dog leaves the pasta and veg on leftovers Hmmshe does enjoy a bit of bolognese though

KindergartenKop · 13/07/2021 13:19

Haha @lastqueenofscotland Grin

SimonJT · 13/07/2021 13:20

Mine eats actual shit, including from the cat litter tray, he once managed to snaffle some vomit on a walk, leftover pasta would be the least of my worries.

Borisjohnsonshairbrush · 13/07/2021 13:20

If your Boyf was feeding him chocolate, cheese, xylitol and grapes then I'd be concerned.

Pasta or rice is fine as an addition to dig food in moderation

EileenGC · 13/07/2021 13:20

My grandma used to feed her dog green bean soup. I am not joking, the poor dog would’ve probably loved the idea of pasta. With meat!

Borisjohnsonshairbrush · 13/07/2021 13:21

*dog food

Thecathouse · 13/07/2021 13:23

We feed our dog raw meat and eggs instead of dog food, add the odd bit of leftover veg and pasta because why the hell not

Much like human packaged food, ready made dog food is super processed and really not the best for them anyway.

I just feed the dogs the way my grandparents and parents fed their dogs

VeganVeal · 13/07/2021 13:24

My neighbour feeds his Great Dane boiled eggs, madness. You can imagine the stench

Saidtoomuch · 13/07/2021 13:24

@NeedNewKnees
(I feed ours to the hens)
Please be careful. Its illegal in the UK to feed hens (livestock) scraps due to the high risk of disease passing back into the human food chain through their eggs. Cooked pasta can also cause crop compaction
