my bf feeds his dog pasta

hi namechanged. i don’t live with my bf btw!
when i go round his house, i obviously see him feeding his dogs. most of the time, he has pots of uneaten pasta from the night before. this will usually have meat, tomato sauce etc on it. he puts a lot on top of their usual dog food, they seem healthy enough and i guess ‘back then’ people would feed their dogs their scraps, but this just seems a bit wrong?
not looking for advice etc just wanted to know if i’m right in thinking he shouldn’t do this?

Tomatoes, onions and garlic can be toxic for dogs, as is chocolate and grapes.

BastardMonkfish · 13/07/2021 15:10

When my dog was alive I used to make her scrambled eggs and toast on Saturday mornings.

Heyha · 13/07/2021 15:13

@Secondbellini

I find it hard to believe it is illegal to feed things like pasta and porridge to hens if you are not a commercial farmer.
It absolutely is, livestock is livestock in the eyes of the law whether its mine in my garden or my commercial egg-producing neighbour, because it's about national flock/herd health and biosecurity.

It's probably not as well publicised as it should be tbf.

Heyha · 13/07/2021 15:15

Our dog has plain pasta (chuck an extra handful in for him Blush) but there's usually something in the sauce he can't have so he gets it dry. Doesn't complain!

LadyCatStark · 13/07/2021 15:16

He shouldn’t be feeding them sauce with onions or garlic in but I bet my dog would enjoy pasta to be fair. He loves cheese, eggs (yes boiled ones in particular), all types of fish and in the mornings he likes me to put a splash of mild on his kibble as of it’s cereal 😂.

1forAll74 · 13/07/2021 15:16

The dogs will probably end up too fat if this goes on all the time. Bits of leftovers are ok now and again, Some dogs will seemingly wolf down anything, but some stuff is bad for them.

NotExactlyHappyToHelp · 13/07/2021 15:17

You’ve got to be so careful with dogs and onion. It’s in all sorts of things you wouldn’t even think of like pasta sauce.

Just one time will probably be ok but if you habitually feed them onion the toxicity of it will build and can be deadly.

Just the pasta is fine. My dog loves nothing more than wholewheat pasta plain chicken and broccoli as a treat tea.

Onions & garlic are bad for dogs

My cats eat pasta, little fuckers. Leave it out and bang one of them will eat it. I hate them in the kitchen, they are worse than the dog!

SpindleWhorl · 13/07/2021 15:32

I agree with pp who asked why he's cooking so much fucking pasta in the first place.

You say he's leaving 'restaurant sized potions' uneaten, @pastadog.

Why the waste?

Is it specifically cooked and left for his dog? Does he otherwise properly feed it, exercise it, care for it, honour and obey it?

DottyHarmer · 13/07/2021 15:35

My dog loved (plain) pasta. I always made an extra portion for him.

Google golden retriever vs. German shepherd pasta eating - so cute!!!

Also concur that Italian dogs eat pasta!

knittingaddict · 13/07/2021 15:40

We were advised by a vet to feed our dog rice and yogurt for a while. I honestly can't remember why, but he loved it and it obviously did him no harm.

Aprilx · 13/07/2021 16:06

He shouldn’t really give them a portion of pasta in sauce as the sauce is likely to contain onions and garlic. It is probably not very good for weight control even if there is nothing actually toxic in there. I think my small dogs would be sick if they ate pasta, but I imagine a bigger dog would just wolf it down.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 13/07/2021 16:10

The amount of onion, garlic et you need for it to be toxic is much bigger than bit of onion in a sauce of which the dog gets a fraction

FlatteredFool · 13/07/2021 16:17

Our borrowed cats love pasta.

Leonberger · 13/07/2021 16:23

Mine get leftovers all the time!

Conchitastrawberry · 13/07/2021 16:26

I feed my dogs I have now a raw diet. I did a lot of reading. It’s bonkers really as our first dog was fed big standard dog biscuits and any left overs. He lived a good long life with no health problems.

BigWoollyJumpers · 13/07/2021 16:30

My cat loves chilli - weird! He also loves bolognese. Basically anything with mince and he will teleport from miles away in an instant Grin.

I saw an episode of a dog show once where the dogs got home cooked meals every night, including huge portions of pasta, roast lamb and more - they weren't overweight and were in fact, fighting fit.

Many commercial dog foods are full of unnecessary additives and imo, aren't that fantastic for dogs.

If the dogs are healthy and a good weight, it wouldn't bother me.

coffeecroissant · 13/07/2021 17:58

Our dogs have always eaten what we have for dinner, unless it's something with chillies, onions or raisins. You have to be careful because there are lots of foods dogs don't digest very well, but if your boyfriend has a good balanced diet, giving the dog the same dinner can help the dog have a varied diet with varied textures. It's more interesting than kibble! My dog loves roast dinners and even cheese on toast.
@NeedNewKnees
(I feed ours to the hens)
Please be careful. Its illegal in the UK to feed hens (livestock) scraps due to the high risk of disease passing back into the human food chain through their eggs. Cooked pasta can also cause crop compaction
Hmm I doubt too many people take notice of this. Certainly none of the experienced backyard chicken keepers I know do, but they're not selling the eggs.
All hens from commercial hatcheries (ie the sort you buy as point of lay pullets) are vaccinated against salmonella and other likely suspects before they are sold.
Been keeping hens most of my life, well into middle age now, and pasta has always been a favourite for them. No problems.
No problems for dogs either, come to that!

Crankley · 13/07/2021 18:23

I hate pasta and wouldn't eat it myself so definitely wouldn't feed it to my pet

Slimmingstar · 13/07/2021 18:24

We always save a bit of our meal for the dog. If we’re eating out, we wrap it in a tissue and take it home for him.
The only things he’s not keen on are olives and lettuce.
