my bf feeds his dog pasta

hi namechanged. i don’t live with my bf btw!
when i go round his house, i obviously see him feeding his dogs. most of the time, he has pots of uneaten pasta from the night before. this will usually have meat, tomato sauce etc on it. he puts a lot on top of their usual dog food, they seem healthy enough and i guess ‘back then’ people would feed their dogs their scraps, but this just seems a bit wrong?
not looking for advice etc just wanted to know if i’m right in thinking he shouldn’t do this?

Our dog regularly gets a bowl of pasta and cat food - he bloody loves it

NeedNewKnees · 13/07/2021 18:48

@DivorcedAndDelighted I entirely agree! 20 years of a household flock and pasta is up there with grapes as a favourite treat! If the eggs are for domestic consumption it’s not a problem.

Devastatedyetagain · 13/07/2021 19:00

@DivorcedAndDelighted assuming you are in the UK, I would suggest you review the DEFRA regulations that we all have to adhere to in order to protect British agriculture. I quote the following:
"Information about feeding kitchen scraps or leftovers and/or catering waste to poultry - this is illegal and may spread notifiable or other diseases: www.defra.gov.uk/ahvla-en/disease-
control/abp/collect-feed/ban-kitchen-scraps-pet/

@Geamhradh

It's what Italian dogs eat Grin My friend in the UK has 2 dogs and they've never had proper dog food. I think as long as you're not giving them the doggy equivalent of a KFC it's ok. My cat's favourite foods used to be grated cheese and melon. (not together)
What kind of melon was it? I’m asking for my cat. Grin

I'm very familiar with them, @Devastatedyetagain, as are most backyard poultry keepers I know. But I choose to exercise my own judgement, as the eggs are used for my own family only. Same goes for just about every pet poultry keeper i have discussed this with.

Pasta is fine to give to dogs.

Bryonyshcmyony · 13/07/2021 19:13

My dog eats horse poo, bits of trimmed off horse hoof, cat poo and his own sick.

Last night's spag bol is positively gourmet.

Does he eat the poo before or after he skillfully slides through it? 😂 Mine prefered after so we couldn't stop the side back slide

@DivorcedAndDelighted
That's ok then! Every farmer in the country has to abide by lots of rules and risk fines for not complying. Your arrogant disregard of the rules because you know better is frustrating and indeed shows a complete lack of understanding of the reason for this regulation. It should be noted that in law, a chicken is not a pet and "backyard keepers" still have to comply with the regulations. Failure to do so is why devastating, infectious diseases such as Foot and Mouth spread.

Unfortunately because you are a "backyard keeper" you will never receive a visit from the powers that be whereas all of the livestock farmers who do everything inline with the regulations are regularly checked.

My friend (farmer) feeds her domestic chickens kitchen waste. Calm down you sound unhinged!

BluebellsGreenbells · 13/07/2021 19:18

Dog food is a man made invention to make money.

Dogs would normally for hunt for other animals or dig up carrots and vegetables.

What do you think they used to eat?

househousehousefox · 13/07/2021 19:18

My dog ate my sons poop before I could clean it up on a sunny day out in the paddling pool. Couldn't look at him the same for a year.
However my mil used to feed her cat chocolate. Poor thing didn't live very long.

ConstanceGracy · 13/07/2021 19:19

If the sauce is really garlicky or has lots of onions it could be really bad for them but other than that it’s crappy but they’ll live

ConstanceGracy · 13/07/2021 19:20

Pretty sure it wasn’t spaghetti bolognese!

ConstanceGracy · 13/07/2021 19:21

Yes, because you are selling to the public and your livestock is in the food chain. Of course you are checked. Yes, backyard keepers can get away with things that you can't. Get over it.

DeathByWalkies · 13/07/2021 19:23

@Secondbellini

I find it hard to believe it is illegal to feed things like pasta and porridge to hens if you are not a commercial farmer.
The law applies even if the hens are kept as pets

www.gov.uk/government/news/apha-warns-not-to-feed-kitchen-scraps-to-farm-animals-because-of-disease-risk#:~:text=The%20Animal%20and%20Plant%20Health,meat%20products%20to%20farmed%20animals.

Bryonyshcmyony · 13/07/2021 19:25

Yes it is technically illegal but as long as your chickens aren't going into the food chain its fine.

Frlrlrubert · 13/07/2021 19:27

I read the other day that dogs have 22 copes of a gene that wolves have 2 of that lets them digest carbs. Amazing what we've done to them as well as breeding for size and shape.

If they aren't overweight and there isn't onion and garlic or loads of salt in the sauce I wouldn't worry too much.

Devastatedyetagain · 13/07/2021 19:31

@Bryonyshcmyony
Unhinged? Because I am annoyed that people act illegally? It is clearly evident that you feel that it is ok to disregard the law. I wonder whether you feel the same about a speeding driver who has chosen to exercise their own judgement?
Your friend who is a farmer is lucky she has not been the subject of an inspection. Failure to comply with any DEFRA regulations has huge implications.
Just because everyone you know is doing it doesn't make it right or indeed me unhinged!

Wiredforsound · 13/07/2021 19:31

I’m looking after a dog that tried to eat a dead rat whale we were out for a walk today. Pasta is a luxury dinner.

Actually I work in healthcare science & do understand the regulations and the rationale. It's for consumer protection and that's sensible for those who are selling to the public. But I'm not. The government can keep its nose out of my kitchen and garden.
Goodness knows what the government would make of the other stuff my hens find in the garden, like dead toads, maggots and dog shit. A bit of cold pasta and kitchen scraps is the least of it!

SweetPetrichor · 13/07/2021 19:37

Our leftovers used to go to the hens. They eat anything and everything, although we did feel a bit guilty if it was chicken curry leftovers. We didn’t collect or use the eggs, so no concerns there, they were just pets.
The dogs would get most meaty leftovers, and things like the dripping, which they loved.

DeathByWalkies · 13/07/2021 19:37

@Bryonyshcmyony

Yes it is technically illegal but as long as your chickens aren't going into the food chain its fine.
That's literally not the law. The law applies even if they are pets who only lay eggs when they feel like it, and will eventually have a dignified burial in the garden after dying of old age. You cannot feed kitchen scraps to chickens or any other farm animal.
