my bf feeds his dog pasta

hi namechanged. i don’t live with my bf btw!
when i go round his house, i obviously see him feeding his dogs. most of the time, he has pots of uneaten pasta from the night before. this will usually have meat, tomato sauce etc on it. he puts a lot on top of their usual dog food, they seem healthy enough and i guess ‘back then’ people would feed their dogs their scraps, but this just seems a bit wrong?
not looking for advice etc just wanted to know if i’m right in thinking he shouldn’t do this?

You can buy dog food that has pasta in it from major dog food brands. So I can't see it being a problem.

Googlewasmyidea1 · 13/07/2021 13:33

The only issue I'd have would be overfeeding if the dog's overweight, other than that it's not a problem.

I give my dog long pieces of spaghetti to eat when we have spaghetti bolognese...but that's purely for the comedy value, nothing funnier than watching dog snaffle spaghetti

BuffySummersReportingforSanity · 13/07/2021 13:35

Is the dog overweight? If so, the problem is overfeeding, not pasta.

If the dog isn't overweight, there's nothing to be concerned about.

Secondbellini · 13/07/2021 13:38

I find it hard to believe it is illegal to feed things like pasta and porridge to hens if you are not a commercial farmer.

DonttouchthatLarry · 13/07/2021 13:39

I'm more concerned by the fact that it's left over yet still larger than a restaurant portion - how much pasta does he cook?! Buy him some scales OP Grin

HeckyPeck · 13/07/2021 13:44

If there are onions, garlic or chives in the sauce, he shouldn't feed it to his dog as they are all toxic to dogs.

Other than that, if the dog isn't overweight then it's probably fine.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 13/07/2021 13:47

He obviously watched Lady and the Tramp at an impressionable age. Grin

KizzyKat91 · 13/07/2021 13:48

Pasta is fine. Certain flavours of my dog's wet food contains bits of pasta. The wheat in it is good for them and can help prevent heart problems. And my dog loves attempting to lick bolognaise sauce off people's plates, but I don't let her as I'm worried about the onion in the sauce.

Rice is also really good for dogs and helps with tummy upsets, so she always gets a portion of rice when we've had stir fry, chilli etc. Same with eggs.

HOkieCOkie · 13/07/2021 13:48

Our dogs get full roast dinner on a Sunday lol 😂 and weatibix for breakfast

Arsebucket · 13/07/2021 13:55

My cats favourite foods are olives and strawberries.

He’s also partial to a bit of toast.

QuestionableMouse · 13/07/2021 14:17

My dog once stole and ate a bag of dry pasta. It was not a fun experience for either of us.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 13/07/2021 14:21

A school friend's cat used to mug you for biscuits, he'd smack it out of your hand and then run off with it.

Hagqueen · 13/07/2021 14:37

🤣🤣

Best part of my dogs week is the left over pasta from spag bol 🤣

itbemay1 · 13/07/2021 14:39

We did this for years, fed our dog leftovers within reason he now has diabetes Shock feel dreadful but it's how we always fed our dogs growing up. Am pretty sure the scraps have contributed.

Turntheheatdownfgs · 13/07/2021 14:39

Pasta is fine and rice etc..I wouldn’t say a tomato sauce is though, don’t think they’re supposed to eat tomatoes and definitely not onions & garlic

BackInBlackAgain · 13/07/2021 14:45

my dog has pasta every 2 days, its good for them, he also has stinky fish (mackerel etc) on his pasta he loves it, the other days he has tinned meat.

Pasta and Rice are very good for dogs who have sensitive stomachs, it is bland and helps them to get better if they have a dodgy stomach.

BackInBlackAgain · 13/07/2021 14:47

ha ha, same here, a full Sunday dinner, he used to have Weetabix but we found he was sensitive to milk so that put a stop to that 🤣
pepsicolagirl · 13/07/2021 14:49

My dog doesn't really get leftovers. We never share human treats like biscuits. but when I cook a Sunday roast she has a portion and same if I cook spaghetti bolognese - the latter is her absolute favourite and she gets very excited when I start cooking it.

Is it wrong? Maybe. But it's also fucking adorable and after losing a dog last year to pesky old age, my current dog is getting treated like the princess she is while I have her. That time is so short.

mumto2teenagers · 13/07/2021 14:57

Pasta isn't dangerous for dogs, I give my dogs leftover pasta all the time, although probably need to be careful not to overfeed if the portions are that big.

OverByYer · 13/07/2021 14:58

My dog loves left over lasagne, roast dinner, tuna. Anything really.
I have had to stop pasta now though as it turns out she is gluten intolerant

Katela18 · 13/07/2021 15:01

Our dog (rescued) almost died as a result of being fed human food, admittedly that was all he ate and I'm not talking about raw meat, veggies etc. His previous owners used to feed him whatever they were having, including tacos, lasagne, fish cake and chips or coco pops.

He ended up with pancreatitis as a result, and now we have to be very careful about what he eats. So while in moderation it's ok, it isn't strictly true that dogs can just eat whatever or eat human foods. (obviously aware this is an extreme example!)

Mydogisagentleman · 13/07/2021 15:02

My dog would love that.
Unfortunately he is allergic to wheat (amongst other things)

Etinox · 13/07/2021 15:06

@VeganVeal

My neighbour feeds his Great Dane boiled eggs, madness. You can imagine the stench
Oh my, that's a vivid image Envy
summersolstice43 · 13/07/2021 15:08

I'd be worried at why he's making so much pasta that there is going to be so much left over and wasted. Why not cut down on how much he cooks to save on waste and get the dogs normal food? Unless he is making too much so he can feed it to the dogs in which case he seems pretty lazy?

Crazyhouse123 · 13/07/2021 15:09

@NeedNewKnees

(I feed ours to the hens)
You feed your dogs to the hens?? ShockShockGrin
