AIBU to call our new puppy Socks?

I am getting a new puppy after a long break without a dog and my children have said they don’t like the name I had chosen for her - Socks. My other half joked about her socks (she has cute little white paws) when we first met her and for me it just stuck. My older son said it’s a cat name and you can’t call her that. My older daughter and younger son are now agreeing with him!

I think it’s up to me what I call my dog - neither of the older two live at home now and I will be the one with full responsibility for the dog.

Is it such a bad name for a dog?

I personally prefer two syllable names but apparently dogs react better to single syllable names

It is a cat name IMO but you can call your dog whatever you like.

Whatever you do don’t call it Teddy. Mines called Ted and so are at least 75% of other dogs we meet out and about. It’s very annoying and I wish I had been more imaginative!

I have known a few socks over the years - one of our cats had white socks and we came close.

I like person names for dogs. She looks like a Mabel or a daphne to me.

But she’s yours, call her what you like.

Apart from anything else she's your dog so you can call her whatever you want. If you like the name that's what you should call her.

An old friend had a ginger golden retriever by the name Tipper because the tips of his toes were white when he was tiny. I always thought that was a cool, less obvious way of acknowledging it!

I’d never thought about it but yes, like Boots and Mittens, Socks is a cats name. Also totally uninspired. You should call her what’s makes you happy though, she won’t mind!

I'd call her Curly Sue. Nickname Suzie. But socks is fine. A little bit catty but not as much as Mittens. She's very lovely!

I like Socks, also Paws, another cat name traditionally.
