AIBU to call our new puppy Socks?

I am getting a new puppy after a long break without a dog and my children have said they don’t like the name I had chosen for her - Socks. My other half joked about her socks (she has cute little white paws) when we first met her and for me it just stuck. My older son said it’s a cat name and you can’t call her that. My older daughter and younger son are now agreeing with him!

I think it’s up to me what I call my dog - neither of the older two live at home now and I will be the one with full responsibility for the dog.

Is it such a bad name for a dog?

She's gorgeous. When it comes to dog names it's always good to think whether you would be embarrassed calling it out on a field.

There’s a dog near me named socks! Perfectly acceptable name and a the one I know is a very cute dog

Awww! What a cutie! Name him/her what you want. I once knew a dog named Socks. A gorgeous Australian Shepherd named after my American boss’s favourite baseball team. My dog also has a one syllable name - works just fine.

Totally adorable! One of my favourite house/pet sitting positions have a dog named Socks. It really suits her.

Well my cat was called Socks but I think it’s pretty universal so call him what you like.

The only human names that work on pets are ones that no sensible person would give to an actual human e.g Phyllis, Hilda, or Isadora.

Or, if you're really keen on Socks in Spanish is Calcetine? I wonder if the same word in other languages would work too.

I would never call a dog Socks, but it's not my dog.

the only reason I wouldn't choose it because if you shout "Soooooocks!" it could sound like 'Sucks" .
I'd dislike that.

What a cutie. Socks is more of a cat name for me because that was the name of a somewhat famous cat in the US, Chelsea Clinton's cat when the Clintons were in the White House. My mother used to refer to that cat as Socks Rodham Clinton.

I have always named my dogs people names, which can also sometimes present problems when you are calling them in the park. But all in all, I think Socks is a cute name and you should name her whatever you want.

Lovely puppy !I used to have a cat called Socks about 25 years ago, black, with four white paws. But had a relative with a dog called Socks,also black with white paws..You like the name. so matters not what others think.. Your puppy will respond to whatever name you choose eventually, and the pup doesn't know, or care,that some cats are called Socks. !!

What about boots/bootsie?
