Neighbours smoking weed

sunnygemini · 11/07/2021 12:18

We have lived in our cul de sac for nearly 4 years, we're the newbies here. Mostly young families plus one older couple, everyone is lovely and friendly but generally keep themselves to themselves.

One house (parents plus older children in late teens/early 20s) are blatantly smoking weed, the bedroom windows are wide open and the road stinks of it, have noticed several times. All the cars are there so looks like the parents may be home. They are the only house that have not been friendly, also annoying taking wheelie bin (now retrieved!), walking across our garden when they feel like it, permanently using the only visitors parking space as their own and chopping bits of our protected tree off on our side without permission. I realise this is not a big issue in the grand scheme of things and have ignored up to now but is just annoying with young children.
Would I be U to report the weed use?

Nothing will happen

It’s a bit of weed. The police won’t be interested in someone smoking their own stuff

Growing it and selling it as a big dealer yes, but this is too small time for them to care

Mrsjayy · 11/07/2021 12:28

It's just something you need to put up with unfortunately I mean you could phone the police again and again but there is very little they can do if its smoking it. We have neighbours a few doors away and it stinks I agree it's a pain to live near.

pinkcircustop · 11/07/2021 12:30

YANBU.

Police. Every. Single. Time. It’s simply not acceptable.

I don’t know about other areas but where I live the police attend and take action.

Lolwhat · 11/07/2021 12:37

Have you considered getting over it?

Purple21 · 11/07/2021 12:41

Nothing you can do

ElaborateSalad · 11/07/2021 12:42

Live and let live.

Elletine · 11/07/2021 12:43

I would hate this. Is “several times” over the course of say 6 weeks? As if so I’d shut my windows and get on with my life…… if it’s every day or every other day I’d get onto the police. I loathe the smell.

Maggiesfarm · 11/07/2021 12:47

I daresay they don't realise the smell travels so far. I've known plenty of regular weed smokers in my time (smoked it myself as a young person), and can honestly say have not been aware of it outside their homes, and I have a good sense of smell. A neighbour might catch a whiff in the back garden, so what?

It's not a terrible smell.

The police won't do anything, you just have to learn to live with it. If you have small children they won't know what it is they are smelling, if they smell it at all.

BluePi · 11/07/2021 12:48

It’s annoying and I hate the smell too but I’d rather put up with the smell than the noise of alcohol fuelled parties (not say it’s necessarily one or the other).

ticktockriojaoclock · 11/07/2021 12:49

Have you considered getting over it?

Yes, this. Give it a try. They don't sound like ideal neighbours but the weed isn't the issue.

GoWalkabout · 11/07/2021 12:53

If its seeping into your house or overpowering outside I would go and have a friendly chat. I can't see that the police would attend. Do you want to raise a council complaint you may have to disclose in future. Hopefully the parents are already fed up with the smoker and will chuck them out soon.

Adarajames · 11/07/2021 12:59

They certainly don’t respond where I live, the Met would need thousands more officers just to cover my local neighbourhood, let alone the borough or London generally! !

princesslarmadrama · 11/07/2021 13:01

I have the same too neighbours son and friends smoking weed. I can put up with the smell it's the noise from them always gathering on the driveway and having stupid loud cars going up and down the street. Parents don't say a word. At 18/19 I thought they would of grown up by now instead of hanging around on the streets.

Someone's had an early start Wink
Lonelycrab · 11/07/2021 13:02

Yabu.

Plenty of things my neighbours do that I don’t like. The boy racer with 3 cars (and a flat with zero parking spaces) is currently revving his newest piece of shit hot hatch, after fitting a very noisy exhaust. Joy.

And the pisshead football fan shouting racist crap at the Denmark game the other night.

Police don’t even visit burglaries or investigate violent robberies anymore. Why would they be interested in someone smoking a joint?

sunnygemini · 11/07/2021 13:03

Thanks for the replies, yes I know I could get over it as I have been doing, ignoring them so far but its still annoying, as are the other anti social things they do we have to put up with.
I notice it when we go out into the road past their house probably at least once every week, but usually get into the car and drive past so could be more.

Not sure a friendly chat would go down well, from the limited conversations we've had, I think the parents are probably not the type to stop them, the dad is just rude and the mum seems to not want to talk to anyone and sends her out to husband to talk.
I just think its unfair we have to put up with the things they do but it is still illegal and anti social, even if police don't seem to bother.

princesslarmadrama · 11/07/2021 13:05

I know it's annoying OP and hard to turn a blind eye. The amount of times I've wanted to go out and say something but then I think of the retaliation and think it's not worth it.

Saoirse82 · 11/07/2021 13:06

I think weed should be legalised, it causes a LOT less issues than alcohol so on this basis and the fact that the police would do absolutely nothing YABU

DinosaurDiana · 11/07/2021 13:07

Weed stinks. I don’t see why others should have to put up with it.

MsMitford · 11/07/2021 13:09

We've had this exact problem and the police (Met) have been really good. They've visited the property several times, given warnings and a CPN. You will need to keep a written log and keep reporting.

Some things that you might want to consider:
Do you own your property? Reporting risks putting you in a position where you would have to declare this if you ever sell.
Do the weed-smokers own their property or are they tenants? If tenants you can go the double-pronged approach by reporting to police and landlord.

In our situation it was either report it or sell up and move (yes, it was that bad). Moving was unaffordable, so we've gone the reporting route.

You shouldn't have to live with this. Good luck with whatever you decide to do

DrCoconut · 11/07/2021 13:12

If I reported every neighbour who smokes weed I'd be on a permanent hotline to the police. It's just one of those things nowadays in a residential area or even the high street. I leave them to it as they are leaving me alone. The last thing I need is conflict with neighbours.

Maggiesfarm · 11/07/2021 13:15

I agree with Coconut and, let's face it, there are worse smells. I'd be far more concerned about the other things these neighbours do than a bit of grass.

Maggiesfarm · 11/07/2021 13:17

You could put a funny 'Keep off the grass' greetings card through their letter box.
