Neighbours smoking weed

We have lived in our cul de sac for nearly 4 years, we're the newbies here. Mostly young families plus one older couple, everyone is lovely and friendly but generally keep themselves to themselves.

One house (parents plus older children in late teens/early 20s) are blatantly smoking weed, the bedroom windows are wide open and the road stinks of it, have noticed several times. All the cars are there so looks like the parents may be home. They are the only house that have not been friendly, also annoying taking wheelie bin (now retrieved!), walking across our garden when they feel like it, permanently using the only visitors parking space as their own and chopping bits of our protected tree off on our side without permission. I realise this is not a big issue in the grand scheme of things and have ignored up to now but is just annoying with young children.
Would I be U to report the weed use?

I can just see the op popping round to her neighbours asking if they would consider brownies Grin

EverythingWillFallInLine · 11/07/2021 14:41

It would solve the problem though.

OnWhatPlanet · 11/07/2021 14:43

I don’t agree that there are worse smells. It’s vile.

I had an actual cannabis farm growing in the house next door to me and the stench from when that was raided was nothing compared to the stench the previous tenants created when they had three dogs shitting in the tiny yard next to mine. The yards are a heat trap and because they never picked the dog shit up the stench and flies in peak summer was way worse than the smell when criminals used the same house as a cannabis farm.

The M and S turkey that went off a few years ago absolutely honked too. I'd choose to smell weed over that as well

Lavender! That's another offensive smell. It fucking stinks.

therarebear · 11/07/2021 14:46

Our neighbours smoke really strong smelling weed too and it comes right through our place through windows and vents. In the middle of summer we've had days where we have to shut all the windows to minimise the stench. And then of course we're just roasting inside. Can't use the garden. It's awful, why would I want my house to reek of weed? But agreed, the cops won't do much and the neighbours will know it was you. I feel your pain.

Saidtoomuch · 11/07/2021 14:47

🤮 I would hate to hang my washing out and have the neighbours weed make it smell like cat piss. I don't think the police will do anything, but i hate the fact that weed smoking has become normalised for children.

I wonder how many people click on this thread simply to check that it isn't them the OP is referring to. Grin

Absolutely - absolutely - every time. Parents with children [age immaterial] Flowers

EverythingWillFallInLine · 11/07/2021 14:52

@Saidtoomuch yeah I don't like that either. There's a childminder local to us whose neighbours toke in the garden, right next to hers which as well as being a place with preschoolers in is also a (registered legit) workplace. It's a real problem for her.

Onetraumaatatimeplease · 11/07/2021 14:54

Sorry. I totally disagree about phoning the police. They really have got other things to be dealing with. I fail to see how the 'whole road smells of it' it smells while it's being smoked sure, but once it's done the smell dissipates. I really don't know how people will cope when it's legal here. And it will be. Once the government realises how much money they are losing whilst keeping it semi legal.

KateMuff · 11/07/2021 15:02

Go and speak to them and say you can smell it in your house. They may be using it for pain relief like my 78yo dm, or to help them sleep, or deal with trauma. People self medicate for a lot of reasons. Someone kept calling the police on my great uncle for smoking weed during lockdown but he's a Rastafarian, it was just racism, he'd never smoke outside of sacrament. People use cannabis for many many reasons and only a small minority of smokers are selfish wasters

EverythingWillFallInLine · 11/07/2021 15:04

Hopefully once it's legal it will be a bit better controlled though eg there will be provisions covering nuisance etc that would be easier to enforce on behalf of those affected eg like for the childminder near me.

lissie123 · 11/07/2021 15:12

I find it really interesting that so many people find this acceptable. I had friends who got so fed up with their neighbours smoking weed in their garden they moved house. Just because it is commonly used doesn’t make legal. Weed smoke can have a really foul stench. I personally could not put up with it; went on holiday in the UK last week and our rented flat stank of it from the people below. Won’t be returning to that flat again because of the smell. It’s just antisocial.

I've had to live around seriously bad neighbours who make it impossible to sleep so frankly don't give a shit about the smell of weed. People on MN have noses like bloodhounds.
Katkinsgreyy · 11/07/2021 15:22

It really is a vile smell.
Other than talk to them, I'm not sure what can be done about it unfortunately. It's definitely something I wouldn't be able to put up with.

ocpwr · 11/07/2021 15:26

It's going to be something you are going to get used to, i smoke weed for health issues and its totally legal, more and more people are starting down this journey now. It just sounds like you have inconsiderate neighbours full stop unfortunately.
Weed isn't the devils drug, its helps so many ailments in people as long as its used responsibly unlike tobacco and alcohol.

If you're in the UK possession of smokable cannabis is a criminal offence. Medical need isn't a defence.

EverythingWillFallInLine · 11/07/2021 15:42

@ocpwr I'm sure people in Canada thought the same too : that legalisation meant they'd all just have to put up with toking everywhere. But in fact what's happened is the opposite : developers and landlords have banned use in most high density residential areas and it's massively restricted in public spaces too. If as you say "more and more people" are going to use in the UK we'll likely follow suit.

I don't know why people don't just vape anyway : it circumvents any of these problems (can understand reluctance re edibles though.)

ocpwr · 11/07/2021 16:04

MurielSpriggs
i can guarantee my weed is totally legal. i have a private prescription. look it up.

DdraigGoch · 11/07/2021 16:34

It's not a terrible smell.
@Maggiesfarm you speak for yourself, it makes me feel nauseous.

OP, I sympathise but there's not really much that anyone will do. It seems that in the UK we're expected to put up with nuisance neighbours to a degree you wouldn't get in other countries. In many countries in Europe, noise rules are much stricter for example.

I'm not doubting you can get a private script, but how do you fill it? Genuine question, I've read of a child with horrendous seizures for whom cannabis is a miracle, but although the parents did get a private script they couldn't find a pharmacy to fill it.

Hi @ocpwr

I'm sorry to hear that you have a condition that requires cannabis, and if it was up to me you would be able to access it however you want. I know that cannabis medicines are available in a range of formats in the UK, including oils, sprays, capsules and dried flower to vaporise. But you said you smoke weed, and smoking of cannabis medicines (totally perversely) is not legal here.

MurielSpriggs · 11/07/2021 17:06

@ocpwr

Just as authority for it being illegal to smoke medicinal cannabis:

"The health harms of smoking are clear, therefore the regulations prohibit both the prescription and self-administration of a cannabis-based product for medicinal use in humans by way of smoking other than for research purposes, and patients should be informed of the health risks associated with such use."

From the letter from the CMO and NHS England about cannabis-based products for medicinal use:
assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/753444/letter-with-guidance-on-cannabis-based-products-for-medicinal-use.pdf

Totally bonkers, but British drug legislation has never been rooted in reason

ocpwr · 11/07/2021 17:21

@MurielSpriggs @HirplesWithHaggis

I don't really want to go into it all but i pay around £450/month from a private company to get my script delivered to me. I vape and take edibles and no one has ever complained about smells to me. It is fully legal and if you search online it will give you all of the relevant information.

I was unable to function like a normal person until cannabis so I will argue to anyone that makes out its all criminals and gangs supplying it.
It isn't available to just anyone that applies. You have to meet certain medical criteria.

Woodmarsh · 11/07/2021 17:25

Yup get over it move on
