Thinking from the numerous threads always on mn about surname changing (which are always interesting and insightful reading). It made me think what surname would I go for if I was deciding a completely new one ?

I’m thinking something that sounds old fancy English so it sounds like I have money, even though I don’t 🤣

Farquhar or Cholmondeley maybe 🤔

I think surnames in English are pretty misogynistic. I sometimes use my Gaelic one which at least names me as 'so and so's daughter' rather than son.
The so and so is still a man though, so not much better.
If it was a completely free choice I don't know what I would go for. I'd want something that sort of described me now but also what I would like to be ideally.

Cazzovuoi · 10/07/2021 08:17

I’d got for something that opened doors in the off chance that you’re “one of those”.

So I would choose something like Grimaldi, Rothschild, DeBeer, Guinness, Rockefeller, Buffet etc.

WittyUser · 10/07/2021 10:14

I would choose something cheerful like Holiday Smile

FindingMeno · 10/07/2021 10:19

Something Italian or French sounding.
Can't think.

elQuintoConyo · 10/07/2021 10:27

Cavendish sounds pretty posh (I'm watching Tour de France). Or Bentley.

If I changed my surname it'd be Winterpark. I imagine Richmond park in the snow with deer, on a misty morning.

Surnames starting de-something or van-something always sound cool. You could be De'Ath Grin Denise Outen added the Van to sound catchier. Da Vinci just means 'from' Vinci (the town).

You could be Claire Da Lincoln, Sarah Van Wirrel.

elQuintoConyo · 10/07/2021 10:27

Wirral sorry!

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 10/07/2021 10:28

Windsor

KingdomScrolls · 10/07/2021 10:30

I worked with someone whose surname was lattibeaudiere , it has a lovely melodic sound and I have a French first name so I think I'd choose that

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 10/07/2021 10:32

Wouldn't change it. Its weird enough that people don't always believe its real... but normal enough that people can say it easily. Although correcting the spelling can get tiring (a letter is often missed out.. or put in the wrong place).

And no, I'm not saying it as there's only a couple of thousand people with the surname in the UK.

Camomila · 10/07/2021 10:33

Verdi - still Italian but short and simple

If I was going for an English surname I like Clearwater or Livingstone

MouldyPotato · 10/07/2021 10:33

Onomatopoeia

MouldyPotato · 10/07/2021 10:34

And then get upset everytime people spelt it wrong

ShirleyDab · 10/07/2021 10:36

I like Blatherwick. It sounds no nonsense and direct.

Iamthewombat · 10/07/2021 10:38

Saxe Coburg Gotha. Then I’d see about getting my hands on some of the cash the royals have salted away.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 10/07/2021 10:38

I think I'd find it very tempting to go with Bag.

"Mike Crap Bag?"
"No. No Mike. Just Crap Bag. First name Crap, last name Bag"

"This is my husband Crap Bag"
"If you need an easy way to remember it just think of a bag of crap"
🤣🤣

Wrotten · 10/07/2021 10:38

I've always like van der surnames. Or Fitz, ie Fitzpatrick or Fitzgerald.

Or I'd go for something cheerful like Christmas.

WeMarchOn · 10/07/2021 10:39

I want to change my name to
*
Princess Consuela Banana Hammock*

takealettermsjones · 10/07/2021 10:41

I'd keep mine, I quite like it, but I'd change the spelling. It's one letter different from how you would expect it to be spelt, so every bloody time I have to say "it's Name, but with an X after the Y" (obviously not the real letters! Grin)

AuntieDolly · 10/07/2021 10:51

Laminate-Flooring
Just like the sound of it Smile

WalkingOnTheCracks · 10/07/2021 10:59

Why would they get it wrong? It’s spelled exactly as it sounds.

SummerWhisper · 10/07/2021 11:00

Confectionary. I love that word. I would like a flowery first name to go with it like Rose or Lily.

MooseBreath · 10/07/2021 11:05

@Wrotten My maiden name is a "Fitz". Much prefer it to my married name, but I wanted the same surname as my children.

I love the surname Wilde. Always have.

FastFood · 10/07/2021 11:24

Oh I'd love a slavic name, something grand like Fedorovna or Solzhenitsyna.

I could also deal with a french aristocratic name such as "Beauvoir de la Tour" or "Saint-Gracien de la Martinière" (totally made up names, pretty sure they don't exist)

Got a very basic french name instead but its pretty cool so I'm happy with it.
