Thinking from the numerous threads always on mn about surname changing (which are always interesting and insightful reading). It made me think what surname would I go for if I was deciding a completely new one ?

I’m thinking something that sounds old fancy English so it sounds like I have money, even though I don’t 🤣

Farquhar or Cholmondeley maybe 🤔

I had a very unusual surname. I spent 30 years listening to people comment on it, make jokes, or misspell it.

I married someone with one of the most common surnames in the UK Grin

KillerFlamingo · 10/07/2021 22:40

My best friend is dating a Mr Smiles, I love it, he sounds like one of the Mr Men! Grin

1990s · 10/07/2021 22:43

Got married, we chose a new one for us both together. Very easy, no idea why more who aren't happy with the trad set up don't do it.

81Byerley · 10/07/2021 22:49

Rainbird. I love that name.

redpontipine · 10/07/2021 22:54

@JeanneDoe may I ask why those. One of those is my married name and I'm still struggling to come round to it. Not found anything I like perhaps you can help.
I loved my maiden name.

Classica · 10/07/2021 22:56

@dianebrewster, that's so interesting about names ending in -ster. Never knew those names had come down a female line!

ValerieMorghulis · 10/07/2021 22:57

I like the very straightforward English occupation names - like Miller, Fletcher, Fuller etc. No mess, no fuss and easy to spell and pronounce

WalkingOnTheCracks · 10/07/2021 23:24

Haagen-Dazs - which is totally made-up anyway.

But then you can have kids called Cherry, Vanilla and possibly Rainbow Sherbert.

DH has always harboured a secret desire to change his surname to Loxley. For added wankiness he rather fancied double-barrelling it with our actual surname, which then sounds exceptionally posh.

Thankfully he's almost given up on the idea and thinks he'll use the name "Loxley" for our next dog instead Grin

He definitely daydreams about being Robin Hood.

I know someone with the surname Samphire. I love it.

Summerdayshaze · 11/07/2021 00:00

Lascelles, Fielding, Copeland, Vettriano, Aster, Lauder.

IVflytrap · 11/07/2021 00:03

I love the surname Mistry, but don't have any south Asian ancestry so couldn't use it.

I met someone with the surname Arrowsmith once. That's pretty cool.

redfairy · 11/07/2021 00:05

Winters, Waters or Rainbow

JeanneDoe · 11/07/2021 21:52

@redpontipine no idea re Blackmore and Jourdier.
Now that I'm thinking about it however, I think Blackmore sounds quite classy, and Jourdier, well I like the way it looks different from how it sounds.

You could say the same about Knight, I just think there is something very cool about it. The bearer of it is going to be confident, outgoing, not the shy retiring type.
I love how it looks written down. I really cannot say why other than I like how it sounds and how it looks.

Weirdly, the words Knight and Night feel completely different.
So for example, I wouldn't like the surname Night but I love Knight.
Very strange I know!

Onlinedilema · 11/07/2021 22:14

De'Vere would be my choice.

TooYoungToNotice · 11/07/2021 22:18

I've got an unusual last name, the origins of which aren't clearly known . Could be old French, might be old Irish or Welsh. No one actually knows.

It's seemingly impossible to spell or pronounce by many (it's really not!) So I'd go for something simple like May. Ah I can just imagine the joy of not spelling it out letter by letter multiple times a day!

ConsuelaHammock · 11/07/2021 22:26

Van Zanten or de Courcey

Kanaloa · 11/07/2021 22:30

I was going to say Honeychurch or DeLuca but after seeing Baudelaire and Valentine I really like those as well!

LemonSherbetFancies · 11/07/2021 22:35

Fallon, just think it sounds nice

Pottedpalm · 11/07/2021 22:39

Kennedy
Or Russell

lovethisjourneyforme · 12/07/2021 10:21

Labonaire

IDontLikeZombies · 12/07/2021 17:11

I did not know that DianeBrewster, I love the idea of the strong minded woman.
After some thought I think I'd go for a colour, probably Teal.
