Thinking from the numerous threads always on mn about surname changing (which are always interesting and insightful reading). It made me think what surname would I go for if I was deciding a completely new one ?

I’m thinking something that sounds old fancy English so it sounds like I have money, even though I don’t 🤣

Farquhar or Cholmondeley maybe 🤔

@HuntingoftheSnark

My parents changed our family name a few years before I was born, and we are all (the "children") really annoyed that they weren't more imaginative. We all wish they'd kept the original name. I'd like Fox.
Why did they do that?
OneinNine · 10/07/2021 14:02

To something people could spell! Mind you they can't spell my first name either so had better change that to.

PegasusReturns · 10/07/2021 14:11

I’ve always rather like the idea of being a “de Winter”.

scottmichael · 10/07/2021 14:12

Something well-known and easy to spell.

OomphRidden · 10/07/2021 14:12

Cadwallader

3Britnee · 10/07/2021 14:15

Maybe DuBois

Seasidemumma77 · 10/07/2021 14:15

Van De Kroeg was my favourite suggestion when friends were being imaginative about a name change for me post divorce.

Most suggestions were Harry Potter/Lord of the Rings inspired.

Still haven't chosen one!

ArabellaRockerfella · 10/07/2021 14:33

I always liked the name Baudelaire, after the children in 'A Series of Unfortunate Events' [:)]

HuntingoftheSnark · 10/07/2021 15:51

@debwong my father was a German POW who was grateful to remain in the UK after being released, and they were fed up of having to spell out their German name. However, even that was a made up name - my German grandfather had to change the family name from Polish to German, if he wanted to keep his job (decree by Himmler).

Glitterblue · 10/07/2021 15:51

I'm happy with my surname, it's Scottish and easy to spell. My maiden name was Polish - I loved it but nobody could ever spell it!

Howmanysleepsnow · 10/07/2021 15:54

Snow.

Thanks, very interesting.

Would you consider changing it back to the original Polish?

HuntingoftheSnark · 10/07/2021 16:54

@debwong no, I don't think that would have gone down very well! I just look back at their name change in the early 1960s and wish they'd chosen something else - the possibilities were endless!

LeanneBrownsLonelyBraincell · 10/07/2021 17:26

I'd quite like to be a Henderson or an Anderson. Good solid names.

Or Apostilides.

Bitofachinwag · 10/07/2021 17:34

@SummerWhisper

Confectionary. I love that word. I would like a flowery first name to go with it like Rose or Lily.
Sounds like a character from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang :)
Chunkymenrock · 10/07/2021 17:36

Faulkner is always my favourite.

Zerogravity · 10/07/2021 17:39

I have a friend with the surname Sunflower (in a different language). She's always cheerful and I reckon 90% of that is due to her name. Grin

BatshitCrazyWoman · 10/07/2021 17:55

@WhenZoomWasJustAnIceLolly

Rose. It’s really pretty!
It was my late mother's maiden name. I'm divorced and may change my surname to this.

(My mother hated it and said she was teased at school).

Octopuscake · 10/07/2021 19:17

Pomegranate

Caterinasballerinas · 10/07/2021 19:31

Quite boring in comparison with some suggestions but I always like Harper and Hudson with no real reason for it other than hearing them and thinking yes, they sound good solid names. I also think they are names you could choose anything to go with as a first name. I had this self created rule that my DC needed short first names because our surname is long, I also offended my DH by proclaiming that of course my long first name which used to be with a snappy short surname wasn’t a combination you’d choose.

Rainbowx · 10/07/2021 20:07

Windsor or anything royal....

Mummytea24 · 10/07/2021 20:21

Bosen-Hagen, another tour de France one but just love the sound of it

Icanseethepigeon · 10/07/2021 20:29

Love this thread ... i always fancied being a Rainbow but also now that Baudelaire has been suggested, veering towards that.

I will eventually marry my partner, and we've discussed both changing our names to something new, so this thread is great!

ShitPoetryClub · 10/07/2021 20:47

O'Connell, My lovely DMs maiden name.

Failing that something nature related, "Wilderness" or "Willows".

Or for practicality reasons something at the start of the alphabet instead of the end, then I could be at the front.

Antlily · 10/07/2021 21:28

If I was going to change (which, I wouldn't, see below) I would go for something fabulous sounding and Cornish, maybe Trelissick or Trenowden.

I have one of the surnames which has is always 'dissed' on these threads and I love it. Peoples initially reaction to it is usually a good indication of character @FoxVillage @WhenZoomWasJustAnIceLolly @ShirleyDab
