Thinking from the numerous threads always on mn about surname changing (which are always interesting and insightful reading). It made me think what surname would I go for if I was deciding a completely new one ?

I’m thinking something that sounds old fancy English so it sounds like I have money, even though I don’t 🤣

Farquhar or Cholmondeley maybe 🤔

I came across someone with the surname 'Brilliant' and was kinda jealous. Also I like distinguished ones like Cavendish, Grosvenor, Montgomery.

ChilliChoco · 10/07/2021 22:01

Chocolate / Chocolat
Sweet
Honey

Lincslady53 · 10/07/2021 22:04

I would go Northern. Firkinshaw.

CovidCorvid · 10/07/2021 22:06

Darling

BillyShears · 10/07/2021 22:07

Inkpen, Goodsir, Gotobed or Drinkwater. Love those weird, quirky names that are things or descriptions.

CovidCorvid · 10/07/2021 22:08

@PegasusReturns

I’ve always rather like the idea of being a “de Winter”.
I used to know someone with the surname de la Croix which I thought was nice. English, not French.

I also used to know someone who legally changed their surname to Moonlight.

forinborin · 10/07/2021 22:11

Oh I'd love a slavic name, something grand like Fedorovna or Solzhenitsyna.
One of these is a patronymic... so you'd have to rename your dad first. Grin

Flaunch · 10/07/2021 22:11

I’ve always dreamt of changing my name to Moriarty. It just sounds so classy!

Onthegrid · 10/07/2021 22:14

Beauregard

VienneseWhirligig · 10/07/2021 22:16

I love my married name, I think it looks attractive and slightly fey. I just wish people knew how to spell it or pronounce it without me telling them...

I quite like Goodnight, Poldark, Spencer.

Blueskyemily · 10/07/2021 22:17

Valentine

JeanneDoe · 10/07/2021 22:18

Knight.
I love it.
Or Blackmore.

I worked with a woman whose surname was Jourdier and I always liked that too.

thistimelastweek · 10/07/2021 22:21

I love my surname. It's my married name and a bit unusual.

Wouldn't change it for anything.

BoneIdleBitch · 10/07/2021 22:24

Costello is my favourite

Benylin · 10/07/2021 22:25

Pevensie. My surname starts with a P anyway which I like but as a child I wanted to have this surname.

haveibeencaughtout · 10/07/2021 22:26

I've known people called Star, Summerfield, Lomax and Da Silva. Great names!

tiredanddangerous · 10/07/2021 22:27

See this is tricky because I grew up with a last name that no one could spell, but my married name is vey common. I think I need to go somewhere in the middle!

TreeSmuggler · 10/07/2021 22:27

The author Cheryl Strayed did this (chose her surname).

I am not thinking of changing my name but if I did I'd go for a nature theme, Blossom, Wild, River or Storm.

haveibeencaughtout · 10/07/2021 22:28

@Onthegrid oooh! Love Beauregard! I had it on my baby list and the whole family went crackers!

haveibeencaughtout · 10/07/2021 22:28

I also had Gaylord though. Hormones.

Miseryl · 10/07/2021 22:29

Smith. I have a long complicated foreign surname that I spend my life spelling. Still wouldn't change it on principle if I got married.

DirtyDancing · 10/07/2021 22:32

I’d be something fairly traditional, easy to spell but that’s not too common. Maybe a Mrs: Williams, Swidenbank or Bright something like that

lazylinguist · 10/07/2021 22:34

Oh yes I love Cornish names like those, Antlily. I rather like fancy, long first names with short, plain surnames. Like... I dunno... Aphrodite Jones... or Persephone Smith or something. I'd have to change my first name as well though!

RuthTopp · 10/07/2021 22:35

My nan's next door neighbour was a Gotobed.
A few surnames already mentioned are surnames of people I know / knew and dislike so although an unusual name , they would be a no from me.
