Blue hair for my 9 year old?

Kentuki · 09/07/2021 13:52

DS has said he wants blue hair over the summer. I can’t see an issue, it will all be grown out by September or can be shaved off if necessary.

I generally try to live by “say yes to whatever you can, but when you say no, mean it”.

DH isn’t keen as he sort of kicks against anything unexpected like this, but essentially he will let me decide (and he will be the one doing the dye job).

It’s fine isn’t it? I’m not missing anything but saying go ahead?

Yabu - no blue hair
Yanbu - blue hair summer

Go for it! DS1 has had green hair every year since he was about 10. DS2 dyed his blue one year when he was 9ish.
As long as they are prepared to have it all cut off if it doesn't wash out by September!

Get a wash in wash out one and no harm done

Yubaba · 09/07/2021 13:55

My ds is 10 and he wants pink hair over the summer. I’ve said yes, he’s had blue before but it faded to green and was a nightmare to get out.
I’ve done one of those wash out in 7 washes dyes which usually lasts a few weeks over the summer.

Cloudninenine · 09/07/2021 13:57

Go for it. It’s fun, safe personal expression, and an opportunity for him to exercise bodily autonomy.

CMOTDibbler · 09/07/2021 13:58

Aged 12, my ds decided he wanted bright green hair for the summer. So he didn't have it cut before the end of the summer term (so it was longer than usual) then I bleached the ends of the top, then used Manic Panic electric lizard. It looked amazing, and by the end of the summer he had a haircut and all the dye was cut out

SquashMinusIsShit · 09/07/2021 14:01

DD had pink hair and purple hair in the two lock downs and her hair was really long & took ages to fade, she looked brilliant with it & made her happy.

Luckily hair dying isn't a gateway to delinquent behaviour Grin

I crepe papered my dd’s hair pink and that was a huge success. It stayed in until we washed it out and it was really bright

I then did wash in wash out blue and that was a ball ache to get out. It would not wash out and it was awful.

So be aware it might take longer to get rid of the colour

HeavenHotel · 09/07/2021 14:02

Go for it! Why not? :)

Youdiditanyway · 09/07/2021 14:02

No issue with the wash in wash out ones at all. I’d expect a fair few funny looks when you’re out and about though!

Soubriquet · 09/07/2021 14:03

This was dd’s hair

The pink was crepe paper and the blue was hair dye.

Loads of kids dye their hair for the summer. It's a rite of passage at that age 😁 Not sure why your DH thinks it's a problem?

I don't think many people would look twice! Maybe it's a regional thing
EasterIssland · 09/07/2021 14:04

What’s her colour ? If light then it’ll stay the colour. If too dark then you’d need to bleach it as otherwise it might not stay. I’ve got dark hair and unless I bleach it funky colours won’t stay

RonObvious · 09/07/2021 14:06

I've dyed my daughter's hair a couple of times using Manic Panic, although I tend to go for streaks or just the underneath. I do a patch test every time, and don't put the dye all the way to the roots (so that it's not in contact with her scalp). She loves it!

Soubriquet · 09/07/2021 14:06

Last post Grin

I’ve heard good things about these. The colour looks nice and bright and it easily washes out. Might get some for my dc over the summer holidays

Watchingyou2sleezes · 09/07/2021 14:06

One of ours announced he's getting a "Foden" if England win on Sunday

BlackberrySky · 09/07/2021 14:06

Based on my experience with blue hair dye and my own DS, be prepared for disappointment if his hair is mid brown or darker. We used a semi permanent one, he was so excited at its blue-ness on application, only to find it didn't show up on his medium brown hair upon rinsing.

Nairobiblue · 09/07/2021 14:06

Sorry for the blurring but I don't want his face to be seen. This is my 17 yr old son who did this last Saturday on the first day of the summer holidays. I love it and so does he.

Mine have the common panda wax to fuck about with - just about shows up on DD's very dark hair.

TwoLeftElbows · 09/07/2021 14:10

Manic panic's always been good at washing out IME. DD has a blonde friend who dyed hers blue, and ended up with permanent bright green staining, but as long as he is ok with it being cut off if necessary then why not?

Kentuki · 09/07/2021 14:13

Thanks all and for recommendations!

He has mousy dark blonde so who knows if it will show up, I will warn him

@Nairobiblue that’s incredible I love it! What did he use?

My DD13 wanted to dye her hair blue last summer and DH was mildly against. My view was “choose your battles” and so long as it was gone by the time she needed to be in school I saw no problem. It really didn’t last long but giving her that autonomy was very beneficial.

Icanflyhigh · 09/07/2021 14:16

Yep go for it! I'd recommend a wash in wash out too if hair is naturally light as blue can be a bugger to get rid of once it's in! Mines been various shades of blue for about 10 years now!!😂

Florencenotflo · 09/07/2021 14:18

What she does everyone use. Dd wants pink and purple hair for the summer, but she is only 5 so it needs to be very temporary. I'm not even keen on the 7 wash ones to be honest.

Has anyone used the common panda ones? They look good but seem quite pricey for a summer whim!

KindergartenKop · 09/07/2021 14:19

Make sure it doesn't come out if he goes in a swimming pool!

But yes, blue hair!
