Blue hair for my 9 year old?

Kentuki · 09/07/2021 13:52

DS has said he wants blue hair over the summer. I can’t see an issue, it will all be grown out by September or can be shaved off if necessary.

I generally try to live by “say yes to whatever you can, but when you say no, mean it”.

DH isn’t keen as he sort of kicks against anything unexpected like this, but essentially he will let me decide (and he will be the one doing the dye job).

It’s fine isn’t it? I’m not missing anything but saying go ahead?

Yabu - no blue hair
Yanbu - blue hair summer

@Spanielstail

I'm with your husband. It looks awful.but then I think it looks chavvy if kids have lines shaved into their heads or patterns.

I like to see a child you looks groomed (not over groomed. Just neat hair cut, girls in dresses, or leggings and a pretty top, boys in shorts/ nice t shirt. No sports wear/ football shirt/ coloured/ shaved/ unbrushed hair.

Leggings? How common.
Mooloolabababy · 10/07/2021 09:54

Do it, dd was always dying her hair crazy colours over the summer hols, we'd always just dye it back before she went back to school. That's what the summer break is all about Grin

Hamster1111 · 10/07/2021 09:55

We have hair chalks, they are brilliant and stay in till washed out on my daughters hair. You get lots of colours in the pack so can mix it up and the crayons last ages. Might be a good way to test the water rather than using dye? I got ours on amazon. Or just go for it with the dye!!

DD1 is 12 and finished school yesterday (private), the first thing she did was dye her short brown hair blue. She’s a little 90’s grungy wannabe and I don’t mind a bit. Let them express themselves over the summer. I recommend directions. It is semi permanent and will wash out after a few weeks as long as hair not bleached

LittleBearPad · 10/07/2021 10:19

Unless he’s expected to be a page boy I would stress too much. It’s been a shocker of a time recently for kids.

@SheABitSpicyToday do you want unblurred pictures of your daughter on mumsnet?

bubblebubblebubbletrouble · 10/07/2021 10:22

My 10 year old has been through various colours during lockdowns.....as long as you are not using harsh chemicals that will damage their hair why not 🤷‍♀️

FreeBritnee · 10/07/2021 10:24

Wouldn’t bother me at all. Life is for having fun with stuff like this.

FreeBritnee · 10/07/2021 10:27

God reading some of these replies!!!!! These are children. How the hell are we discussing class yet again on here while discussing kids hair cuts!!!!! It’s honestly ridiculous.

BiBabbles · 10/07/2021 10:34

I might consider the chalks or spray ons at that age, but I wouldn't like a dye job and definitely wouldn't allow anything that involved bleaching (our house rule is they have to wait until they can pay a professional to do that and all the ones I know only do 16+ now).

My kids have friends who were doing that at that age, I don't think much of it other kids, but I just couldn't be comfortable doing that with mine. It was still a bit of a struggle when my then-15-year-old did it with pink though I still helped him with it (no bleach & a semi-perm. dye, it looked lovely). I know that's my thing having been made to dye my hair as child 'to be pretty' (aka lighter) rather than anything inherent in dyeing hair, I just couldn't.

MrsCrosbyNRTB · 10/07/2021 11:13

In the nicest possible way, no I don't. Not working class per se but u do think you look a but rough / chavvy with brightly coloured hair. Round here you would stick out like a sore thumb and would be judged and I don't want that.

And how is the weather in Stepford, today @Spanielstail?

My DS (15) has had various different hair colours in the summer holidays for the last few years. Looks fab.

I currently have multicoloured hair. I love it. It’s for ME. It cheers me up.

Couldn’t care less if it looks “chavvy” (awful word).

AnUnoriginalUsername · 10/07/2021 11:17

Do it! Autonomy is so important. I haven't had a natural hair colour since leaving school. I hate it now because I couldn't dye it while pregnant with DS so it's just brown.

Paddingtonitspaddingtonbear · 10/07/2021 11:28

@Soubriquet

Last post Grin

I’ve heard good things about these. The colour looks nice and bright and it easily washes out. Might get some for my dc over the summer holidays

Thanks for sharing this link. I have just purchased 3 for my DDs for the Summer. 😊

My daughter has very ginger hair and wants it pink for the summer! Any recommendations on good wash out colours that will work?

My ds had smurf blue a couple of summers ago & then bright red afterwards, I had to use dye stripper & head & shoulders to remove it when he went back to school, he has bright red hair now, he did it last year as soon as he knew he wouldn't be going back to school before sixth form, it is also below shoulder length.

EmeraldShamrock · 10/07/2021 13:26

@SheABitSpicyToday I'd say it would take directly to her colour.
If not use a pre lightening blonde the day before.
I put a blonde in DD's ends 2 inches and her front pieces and locks, 24 hours later added the pink full head it turned out lovely.
I'm not a fan of live colours there are better options.

SheABitSpicyToday · 10/07/2021 13:27

Is pre lightening blonde a bleach? I don’t really want to use bleach as she’s only 6. And her hair is sooooo thick I’d need quite a lot!

Hankunamatata · 10/07/2021 13:31

I have bright red hair so yes I would let him have blue hair. You could try the spray on stuff first

EmeraldShamrock · 10/07/2021 13:31

Yes she is too young, the colour above from Superdrug would work.

Hankunamatata · 10/07/2021 13:32

Or hair chalks

SheABitSpicyToday · 10/07/2021 13:32

Awesome Thankyou.

Hankunamatata · 10/07/2021 13:40

Claire's accessories do spray in colours and chalks

Hankunamatata · 10/07/2021 13:41

My boys have dark brown and the spray on colours are really bold

I like to see a child dishevelled, hair all over the place and covered in paint, glitter or mud. Shows they've been having fun.
