Blue hair for my 9 year old?

Kentuki · 09/07/2021 13:52

DS has said he wants blue hair over the summer. I can’t see an issue, it will all be grown out by September or can be shaved off if necessary.

I generally try to live by “say yes to whatever you can, but when you say no, mean it”.

DH isn’t keen as he sort of kicks against anything unexpected like this, but essentially he will let me decide (and he will be the one doing the dye job).

It’s fine isn’t it? I’m not missing anything but saying go ahead?

Yabu - no blue hair
Yanbu - blue hair summer

@TwoLeftElbows

How do you bleach hair at home? Do you just get a blonde permanent colour or do you need to put special lightener on it? I'm clueless!
We used this on DS' hair.

Blue is beyond annoy to get out. Pink fades quick. Purple can be a hit or a miss. Red fades super quick. Go for it. I rebealed (spelling?) So much when I was 16 with my hair as I wasn't allowed to dye it

Kentuki · 09/07/2021 15:34

@Spanielstail I also prefer children looking like that but they have their own ideas don’t they!! Little DS has enormous scruffy hair he wants to grow and won’t wear any smart trousers and big DS loves wearing sportswear and now wants blue hair!

So bleach first, and then when do you do the blue dye? Straight away or leave a day or so!

Was going to get the Schwarzkopf live if anyone has used that?

Dd1 is nearly 7 and I've died her hair every summer since she was 4. She has quite dark hair so tend to go for reds/purples that will show without needing to bleach it (Manic Panic and Crazy Colour are my go to.) They are temporary and even if it's not completely out by the time school goes back its not noticeable

PenelopeP1tstop · 09/07/2021 15:54

I agree with @Spanielstail however I wouldn't have put it quite like that.

I don't like it, it looks pretty ... rough usually. However I appreciate kids like it and I suppose it's not been an issue here as my youngest is now 14 and would be horrified at the idea of dying his hair. His older sister always went to the hairdressers for highlights etc.

So I would probably agree it under duress and with rules (no bleach etc) but do I like it? No.

Londontown12 · 09/07/2021 16:15

If u have to bleach first no no ! Not under 16’s
If he has dark blonde hair it may turn green or fade to green also blue is a hard colour to remove if it’s a true semi I think that wud be ok but be careful kids can still react to these colours x

And why not...?

And God-forbid your poor child looks like a member of the Working Classes!!

In the nicest possible way, no I don't. Not working class per se but u do think you look a but rough / chavvy with brightly coloured hair. Round here you would stick out like a sore thumb and would be judged and I don't want that.

I always bleach one day and colour the next. Dunno if you need to leave a day, but I do. I've never used the schwarzkopf bleach but their colours are fine. They fade very quickly though!
TwoLeftElbows · 09/07/2021 19:29

We've only had a subtle effect with Schwarzkopf live, but that might be DD's hair colour.

If either me or DH didn't like it, I'd have no problem telling my child they were too young for hair dye. Primary children don't need blue hair to express themselves. But to me it's very mainstream now and just a bit of fun.

This was my daughters in lockdown, and my son’s now.
Guess we must be ‘Chav’s’

@FawnFrenchieMum I would never say that but it doesn't look nice (seeing as you ask) and your son's hair would never be allowed at secondary school surely? Same with your daughters. Ok for holidays if they must but it'd be a flat no from me if my son wanted his hair like that.

mamawithfive · 09/07/2021 23:28

We live abroad and mine always go to the hairdressers for a colour as soon as school is out for summer.
DS13 got blue this year. But they swim daily so it never lasts long! They enjoy it whilst it's in though!

EatDiamondsForBreakfast · 09/07/2021 23:39

I agree with @Spanielstail

Glumdalclitch · 09/07/2021 23:41

@Spanielstail

I'm with your husband. It looks awful.but then I think it looks chavvy if kids have lines shaved into their heads or patterns.

I like to see a child you looks groomed (not over groomed. Just neat hair cut, girls in dresses, or leggings and a pretty top, boys in shorts/ nice t shirt. No sports wear/ football shirt/ coloured/ shaved/ unbrushed hair.

Gosh, it must be exhausting being so socially insecure that you need to police your children’s appearance so as not to look like members of the working class.

Why not. If you want it to last and intend to grow it out pre lighten his hair first unless he is blonde you'll be wasting money.

georgarina · 10/07/2021 04:09

Yeah why not? It's a fun harmless thing, part of the fun of being a kid. Can't think of a reason to say no

sashh · 10/07/2021 05:03

Go for it.

I loved changing my hair colour when I was younger.

But as I have psoriasis on my head I have to use a shampoo I get on prescription and it strips colour.

It's Alphosyl, and can be bought over the counter and it is great if you do want to wash a colour out.

galaxyfairy · 10/07/2021 05:18

As a serial hair dyer I would not go for blue if you want it to wash out in time for September but overall yes, go for it!

DD was during in lockdown. She wanted to do it for a bit of fun. As I said in previous post I wouldn’t let her go blue again purely because it took so long to get the bluey / greeny tinge out of her blonde hair.
My DS’s is now for the football (he’s copied Phil Fodden), he had it done at the start of the euro’s. Would it be my choice for him, no but it’s not harming anyone and he’ll have the back shaved once the football is over so the lines are gone. Thankfully he goes to a collage for 14+ students (they do five core GCSEs and an apprenticeship). They don’t have a uniform or rules on hair. They are treated like young adults.

@FawnFrenchieMum your children look like they are having fun and loving life.

Those who have a fear of being seen as ‘chavvy’ ask yourself why? What internalised prejudices are you holding? Why do other people’s perceptions of what social class you may or may not be matter so much?
