Any fellow Scots want to join me in saying well done England?

Just that. So pissed off this morning listening to people moaning about England last night. I'm not a big football fan but watched the game and absolutely willed England on. Really don't get the bitterness and just wish we could all just support each other. Anyway, fantastic result from a brilliant game, really hope they go all the way!! Come on England!!

Well done to the team, they have done really well!! I think the negativity is all coming from the way a small number of fans are behaving, so the booing national anthems etc

Oh and the cramming 60,000 people into a stadium when I still can't take my child swimming in our local pool or have a dance at a friends wedding. But that the government, not the England team!!

Chrysanthemum5 · 08/07/2021 09:24

As @TheLovleyChebbyMcGee says I'm pissed off about football apparently being above the rules that apply everywhere else - children can't go to soft play; my child's Higher plans were all chopped and changed about; people can't see their families etc. But that's the Government (UK and Scottish) fault.

So, yes I'm pleased a home nation has got so far - I do wish Zoe Ball would stop talking about it now!

BobbinThreadbare123 · 08/07/2021 09:25

I suspect the minority of dickhead fans is a theme in many countries tbh. I am not a football fan but DH has watched most of this tournament, and booing has occurred in several of the games.
I'm English (family from grandparents back is Irish) and I will support any of the geographical British Isles nations in any sports - whoever is left in the competition!

notanothertakeaway · 08/07/2021 09:31

I'm happy to support England in the final. Very exciting for them

But I do raise an eyebrow at "God save the queen", (the national anthem for the WHOLE OF THE UK) being used as the song for ENGLAND). I think the national anthem should be used when competing for Team GB, and they should use a different song for Team England

England is not the UK

BobbinThreadbare123 · 08/07/2021 09:33

@notanothertakeaway agreed. We should use Jerusalem or something, like they do for the rugby.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 08/07/2021 09:35

I do wish England had another anthem as it’s a dirge as much as anything!

I guess no one wants to open that debate.

Anythingelseintheboxpandora · 08/07/2021 09:35

I’m a Scot. I have no beef with the team. They seem a good bunch of guys and it’s good to see a home nation win.

The commentators and media can fuck off though. Is no one else cringing themselves inside out at the journalist in that interview with Kasper Schmeichel?!

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 08/07/2021 09:37

I think you are right, its just that the home nations get a good look at the dickheads that other countries don't. So we only see the smaller groups of spanish/italian/french fans that travel, where we get exposed to all the dickheads from all the home nations!

VictoriaLudorum · 08/07/2021 09:38

Not the world's biggest football fan or even an England "supporter" but I thought last night's game was dynamic and exciting. I did think England was "lucky" to have the penalty awarded, but I was happy for all involved at the final result.
The commentary on ITV was absolutely dire, though. Especially the exhortations to go out, celebrate, get drunk, stay up late (for children) and bunk off work today. What on earth was the man thinking of?

KopparbergCazza · 08/07/2021 09:38

My DH is English. After the Germany game, even he said he could understand why everyone hates the English and their attitude to football. Booing the other national anthems. That poor German girl crying and all the memes. Everyone parading around like they'd won the tournament because they won one game and already talking like they were guaranteed a place in the final.

It's not the players that are the problem. They did well. It's the fans and the media that make the issue. England haven't won anything in a lifetime and the English-centric media act like they're the best team in the world.

Defender90 · 08/07/2021 09:40

I'm a Scot, I'm really pleased for the team, really pleased for the fans, it's the media coverage that makes me yawn.

ClaudiaWankleman · 08/07/2021 09:41

Isn't it also the national anthem for New Zealand? (although they do other things for most sports).

I don't understand the issue. It's the national anthem of England the 'nation' and of the UK (and several other places).

Frenchfemme · 08/07/2021 09:42

I am in France and watched the game on French tv. Was good to have unbiased and relatively sensible commentary.

SmokeyDevil · 08/07/2021 09:42

The only Scots that will be pissed England won are the die hard independence ones that think England do everything they can to spite them and that everything is England's fault. Thankfully, there aren't many of them, most have some sense. They are just the loudest so you hear them.

I had thought it would be England vs Italy in the final. No idea who will win though, Italy have the best stats overall on winning, but that means bugger all. Either side could collapse under nerves and pressure.

peeweemermaid · 08/07/2021 09:42

Not at all - fellow Scot here and I think its appalling that my fellow countrymen are being so xenophobic. Well done England and I will have my fingers crossed for you in the final. I do agree that the press however, do exacerbate the situation and I am pissed off by Nicola sending all the Scots fans down to get Covid and bring it back and then not let us go to a wedding. That saying, everything Nicola does irritates me.

toastantea · 08/07/2021 09:43

It was a bit of a controversial win in the end. I'm Scottish and support England but I don't think it's the wonderful win they seem to think it is.

reprehensibleme · 08/07/2021 09:44

I'll join you - we were supporting England last night and really pleased they won.

TheDaydreamBelievers · 08/07/2021 09:45

Well done to the England team - good players, good manager, good ethics.

Not well done to the fans booing the knee and other teams, contributing to abuse of a little girl online, or of the government letting so many people attend when our rates are skyrocketing

ApolloandDaphne · 08/07/2021 09:45

I am pleased for them. My DD1 lives in England with her English partner and we are going to visit them this weekend so will be there for the final. I think my DH is very much looking forward to watching it with them and some of their mates!

DdraigGoch · 08/07/2021 09:46

I'm not so sure. I've seen the "anyone but England" mentality before, even at rugby games where the behaviour of the fans is not in question. I'd say that it was the anglophobic nationalist contingent. We get them here in Wales too.

sandgrown · 08/07/2021 09:50

It’s nice to hear some people in Scotland will be supporting England. I am English but like to see any of the home nations do well . On a club level I would support any British club against foreign opposition though I know a lot of people don’t seem able to!

NCd4this · 08/07/2021 09:56

@Defender90

I'm a Scot, I'm really pleased for the team, really pleased for the fans, it's the media coverage that makes me yawn.
That's it in a nutshell. We call it 1966 Bingo!
Chemenger · 08/07/2021 10:01

I despise football, but I am pleased for them. What I'm not looking forward to is the media blanket coverage. DH is English and we will "coincidentally" be in England for the final. Bad planning by me, but such is life. At least if they win they won't have to dig up 1966 quite so often.

Cloudninenine · 08/07/2021 10:01

It drives me mad too. Scot here, happily supporting England (insofar as I support anyone - I’m not really that bothered about football), delighted for the team and the fans. Don’t get the animosity at all, it’s small minded and embarrassing.

the80sweregreat · 08/07/2021 10:18

Nice thread.
I lived in Wales for a few years many years ago and it was always ' ABE' mostly. Didn't bother me, but the division it can cause is a bit sad at times
