Any fellow Scots want to join me in saying well done England?

Just that. So pissed off this morning listening to people moaning about England last night. I'm not a big football fan but watched the game and absolutely willed England on. Really don't get the bitterness and just wish we could all just support each other. Anyway, fantastic result from a brilliant game, really hope they go all the way!! Come on England!!

Most English people think ‘God Save the Queen’ is shit too and would like to use another song for their National Anthem, so you can’t blame them for that! The fans don’t choose it.
Welsh here and happy for England. Good to have something to cheer people up after the past 16 months! Should be a good game on Sunday.

LadyBonnibel · 08/07/2021 14:42

The Danes were funny when being interviewed about England potentially getting their amazing success after 55 years. They said something like "That was the world cup, you've never won this and anyway it's not like we spend time thinkng about your successes."
Their faces were like "Oh do get over yourselves already"

BZoma · 08/07/2021 14:47

The only reason Gary Lineker mentioned about winning something in the 60s or whenever was to specifically make the point that England haven’t really won anything since - ie. translated as “This is a big moment as we’ve been crap for decades.” Again, self-effacement. Hardly bragging about a match that happened when he would have been about 2 Grin. He’s a footballer and so obviously, something like this would be a big deal to him.

Originaltiles · 08/07/2021 14:49

But I do raise an eyebrow at "God save the queen"

I’m English and me too! The should be playing Land of Hope and Glory I think, which is a phenomenal anthem!

BZoma · 08/07/2021 14:56

They sing “Jerusalem” at the schools my DC go to. Yes, it’s a rousing song Grin. But there is one line I was looking at - “Did they build Jerusalem in this green and pleasant land?” Always struck me as odd and why ask that when obviously they built it in the Middle East Confused

@ClaudiaWankleman - apparently New Zealand has two national anthems - God defend New Zealand, and God Save the Queen - both have equal legal standing but God Defend New Zealand is used more often. I like it because it has not Maori and English versions, and the music sounds like something out of Hymns Ancient and Modern.

@BobbinThreadbare123 - they use God Save the Queen for the rugby too - but I do agree that they should use Jerusalem, or something similar - partly because GSTQ is for the whole of the UK, and partly because it is such a dirge. It would be better if it was sung faster, but everyone seems to want to do it at a funereal pace.

iamalighthouse · 08/07/2021 15:03

@notanothertakeaway

I'm happy to support England in the final. Very exciting for them

But I do raise an eyebrow at "God save the queen", (the national anthem for the WHOLE OF THE UK) being used as the song for ENGLAND). I think the national anthem should be used when competing for Team GB, and they should use a different song for Team England

England is not the UK

I'm English and I agree...its like the other nations get own anthem and parliament and we don't
SprinklesMcDoodles · 08/07/2021 15:09

I’m pleased for the England players and Gareth Southgate. They are doing a cracking job. The media however fuel the divide. It’s mainly based in England but broadcast throughout the U.K. they forget that the other home nations are involved in sporting tournaments and base everything around England. It’s overkill to be honest. We’ve been hearing about 1966 for 50 years. It’s insufferable.

BZoma · 08/07/2021 15:10

The Queen lives in Scotland half the time anyway. In Balmoral. So it’s not as if you can blame England for all things royal.

To be honest, they can’t really change the “God Save the Queen” anthem now because she’s in her late 90s. But maybe England will decide on a new anthem after this?

Olliphant · 08/07/2021 15:11

I am scottish and supporting England 100 percent!!

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 08/07/2021 15:15

@BZoma - I’d be surprised if they change the anthem when the Queen dies - I suspect Charles has been waiting so long to hear God Save the King played that there is no way he will give it up.

Sorry - national anthems are a bit of an interest of mine - if I was doing my degree now, my dissertation for the mi
Us if half of it would be on national anthems - as it is, I content myself with looking up all the lyrics and singing along with them all when I watch the rugby.

I know - I’m a nerd. Grin

What a lovely thread. Thank you everyone.

Me!

Scottish, living in Scotland and married to an Englishman. Delighted at England's success, well done them and we'll be cheering them on in Glasgow on Sunday.

Calmdown14 · 08/07/2021 15:20

Nice thread!
I'm English living in Scotland. I totally get 'the media' argument but what I never understand is how that is my fault.
It gets on the nerves of most English people too. I don't know anyone who was as confident as Rio Ferdinand in not being able to see anything but an England win.
Sadly, we have no control over that and most of us are shouting 'shut up' at the pundits declaring a win with 10 minutes still to play.
The over the top comes from the fact it's a big money spinner, not the fans directly.

TheGenealogist · 08/07/2021 15:26

Oh and at the Commonwealth Games where the devolved nations compete individually, it's Jerusalem for England, Flower of Scotland, Danny Boy (Londonderry Air) for N Ireland and Land of my Fathers for Wales.

Not sure what they'd play if Jersey, Guernsey or the Isle of Man won anytihng.

Thank you ! I wish the UK wasn't so divided :(

Well exactly. All the English people I know get pissed off at the media too. They don’t control the media!
