Any fellow Scots want to join me in saying well done England?

Just that. So pissed off this morning listening to people moaning about England last night. I'm not a big football fan but watched the game and absolutely willed England on. Really don't get the bitterness and just wish we could all just support each other. Anyway, fantastic result from a brilliant game, really hope they go all the way!! Come on England!!

@KopparbergCazza

My DH is English. After the Germany game, even he said he could understand why everyone hates the English and their attitude to football. Booing the other national anthems. That poor German girl crying and all the memes. Everyone parading around like they'd won the tournament because they won one game and already talking like they were guaranteed a place in the final.

It's not the players that are the problem. They did well. It's the fans and the media that make the issue. England haven't won anything in a lifetime and the English-centric media act like they're the best team in the world.

This. The booing and making fun of a child. Outrageous behaviour.
AngelicaElizaAndPeggy · 08/07/2021 10:27

V happy for the England team, they seem an amazing group of guys. The commentators are the ones that get Scottish people's backs up with all their tedious ranting about 19bloody66 and it all coming home.

I'll tell you what is coming home- covid. To 66,000 homes probably, thanks to all the fans yelling and clambering on one another. Hope that great drifts of covid haven't been settling on the players - imagine all that breath and spittle inside the stadium like a big miasma of disease being stirred about, bleurgh.

scottmichael · 08/07/2021 10:27

Some of the behaviour is embarrassing but overall I'm happy for them.

lastqueenofscotland · 08/07/2021 10:30

Also a Scot and I think the supporting anyone but England mentality is pathetic, when the highlight for our national team was a 0-0 draw. We have a significantly bigger population than several nations who consistently not only qualify but get past the group stages. We need a long hard look at our academy systems.

I’ve a real respect for this england team, to continue to take the knee despite some gammon booing them, Jordan Henderson wearing pride laces, stirlings work calling out racism in the press, and Marcus Rashford forcing a policy change in government.

Also people have had a really shite year, If they want to get excited about England getting to their first final in 55 years be my fucking guest.

wed8pril · 08/07/2021 10:33

Don't really care either way, but the disproportionate media coverage does get annoying.

the80sweregreat · 08/07/2021 10:39

You will always get bad behavior.
The rugby fans are much better behaved and it's sad that some footie fans can be so horrible.
It does detract from the good ones who just enjoy sport.
Always the minority who let you down in life :(

icebearforpresident · 08/07/2021 10:44

My mums English and happy to see them do well, although I hate football and also don’t really care either way.

I will confess though that when it’s six nations times my loyalties are Scotland then Ireland, because I’m also part Irish.

I went to the athletics at the Glasgow commonwealth games back in 2014 and all the home nations, including England, were well supported by the home crowd. It really is a tiny, very vocal, minority that actively won’t support England.

RaspberryRoyale88 · 08/07/2021 10:49

Well done to England.

I’m not going to lie I wish my English relatives would stfu about it coming home and how they are better than Scotland. We know. I don’t care.

ClaudiaWankleman · 08/07/2021 10:56

I will confess though that when it’s six nations times my loyalties are Scotland then Ireland, because I’m also part Irish.

The Six Nations feels very different though, because it's over a longer period and it's not a knockout format. Also the fact that 2/3 of the competition is the home nations makes it difficult to support everyone!

maddening · 08/07/2021 11:27

"RaspberryRoyale88

Has anyone actually said the words "we think we are better than Scotland " as I doubt it.

Reminds me of when I lived in Edinburgh I remember a guy going on about England and his words were "and all you english do is think you are so much better than Scotland " .

It is not true, I really don't think anyone thinks they are better. I for one love Scotland and think it is amazing 🥰.

the80sweregreat · 08/07/2021 12:01

It's just caused more division hasnt it?
I do find it sad.

Gothichouse40 · 08/07/2021 12:05

Well done England. Im sick of the anti- English sentiment up here. I have English family, my late father was English. The English football team are a young group and I think they have done great. Demark is no pushover.

igelkott2021 · 08/07/2021 12:11

I'm English (family from grandparents back is Irish) and I will support any of the geographical British Isles nations in any sports - whoever is left in the competition

Me too.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 08/07/2021 12:11

I'm pissed off about football apparently being above the rules that apply everywhere else - children can't go to soft play; my child's Higher plans were all chopped and changed about; people can't see their families etc. But that's the Government (UK and Scottish) fault.

But these matches and other mass meetings are part of the testing procedure. No matter what we think of the individual event, they are all feeding into the lockdown data - that's being done across the world at the moment.

I don't understand why so many forget that.

Those footballers and their fans really are part of an experiment / pilot study - and they all willingly agree to it.

Can we get a grip now?

igelkott2021 · 08/07/2021 12:13

@wed8pril

I don't disagree with this. I don't like football generally, I think it brings out the worst in everyone (except Southgate and Schmeichel) and would dearly love the media to shut up about it generally, but that will never happen.

This 100%. The media can fuck off. The team and manager are great.
JesusSufferingFuck22 · 08/07/2021 12:14

I’m a Scot. Not a football fan really but watched the game last night. Happy for the England team and the joy it created for the fans. The national anthem and a few Union Jack at England games is a bit irritating though……..along with the commentators.

I was saying this to my DH yesterday - Scotland really should have a better team as it's about the same size as Denmark and can call on a lot of Scottish heritage players from the rest of the UK too. England and Germany worked together on some of their academy projects, maybe Scotland should be involved too.

TheLovelinessOfDemons · 08/07/2021 12:18

Thanks, from an English person who lived in Glasgow for 12 years. This thread actually means a lot to me.

Seeingadistance · 08/07/2021 12:18

Scottish, and I watched the game last night and really pleased for England.

ludothedog · 08/07/2021 12:25

We were suupporting England here too. We'll done them, looking forward to the final. I think Italy will win however, sorry.

I agree that the commentary last night was awful though, call your work and take the day off, let the kids stay up late etc. Terrible.

Agree with that, the petulant ABE attitude is just embarrassing! Also Scottish and supporting England! ⚽️🦁🦁🦁
Weebleweeble · 08/07/2021 13:11

I have a theory that as so many players from the top National teams play in the Premier League or German equivalent, then the teams end up being very similarly matched.
Also there is much less Nationalistic ranting etc
So many of the players must know each other from previous league posts.

Weebleweeble · 08/07/2021 13:15

DS played rugby when young - they had to bus miles to compete in the Central Belt when it would have been much better to nip down to Carlisle - hopefully that has changed now.

floatingboater · 08/07/2021 13:17

I don't get that attitude either. I'm English but if they were out and Scotland/wales/NI were doing well I'd be cheering them on!
