Any fellow Scots want to join me in saying well done England?

Just that. So pissed off this morning listening to people moaning about England last night. I'm not a big football fan but watched the game and absolutely willed England on. Really don't get the bitterness and just wish we could all just support each other. Anyway, fantastic result from a brilliant game, really hope they go all the way!! Come on England!!

@notanothertakeaway

I'm happy to support England in the final. Very exciting for them

But I do raise an eyebrow at "God save the queen", (the national anthem for the WHOLE OF THE UK) being used as the song for ENGLAND). I think the national anthem should be used when competing for Team GB, and they should use a different song for Team England

England is not the UK

Team GB?

That's rather dismissive of Northern Ireland.

LadyJaye · 08/07/2021 13:24

Scottish here, rugby fan rather than football (so was watching the Sharks v Lions game last night Grin), but you know, well done England and all that.

Gareth Southgate and his team seem to be a nice bunch of guys and I'm pleased for them.

Not really got a dog in the fight for the final, but will probably watch it: it should, from a sporting point of view, be quite entertaining. I often enjoy watching good contests, with well-matched opponents, as an objective outsider. Smile

WildRosie · 08/07/2021 13:25

There is a lot of Italian ancestry in Central Scotland which could lead to mixed feelings on Sunday.

ThursdayWeld · 08/07/2021 13:27

Thank you very much OP, and PPs! Grin

Badgertadger · 08/07/2021 13:28

Scot, living in Scotland. I'm perfectly happy that England won. Think they probably deserved it, even if that penalty was as soft as duck down. It's a bit like how I was happy when Spain won in the quarters. Not my team, not my fight, just happy to watch football. Loved watching sterling run with the ball. Have no issue with the team - they seem like nice enough people on the whole. Kind of understand the excitement of the fans - I'd be the same if it was Scotland!

But the commentary, is there really no alternative? No, I wasn't stressed by it. No, I didn't need a national holiday. No, there was no massive sense of pride in a once in a lifetime thing. I know there are more English people than all the other home Nations put together, but a wee bit of commentary that actually tells us what is happening wouldn't go amiss (Denmark played with only 10 for the last half of extra time but they didn't comment on who was off, or when, or why, despite it being an important part of events). Even some acknowledgement that there might have been UK based Danes watching would have been nice.

This is why I love test match special - they aren't impartial but they try very very hard to be balanced, acknowledging that people are interested in the game, not just the tribalism. Can we please have the same for the football? It'd go a long way to killing off ABE.

the80sweregreat · 08/07/2021 13:28

I'd be cheering any other of the home nations too : Wales are a cracking team and Scotland are always good to watch too.
It's sad that you don't see the Union flag at these events ( as in 1966)
So much division over the years.

anguauberwaldironfoundersson · 08/07/2021 13:29

I'm Welsh. I live in England and am married to an Englishman. I fully support England and would do the same if it had been Scotland who had got this far.

Family members from Wales are spouting some fucking awful anti English shite on Facebook which grinds my gears.

I didn't like the aftermath last night though. After the match a large group of lads marched down our street, singing Vindaloo, smashing pint glasses and knocking over bins. God help us if England Win.

Surely it is the choice of the non-English home nations to choose different anthems? They could all play the National anthem, if they wanted.
womaninatightspot · 08/07/2021 13:29

I'm Scottish and I'm rooting for them to win. Not a massive football fan but generally my support goes to the Scottish team and if they're out to any of the other home nations.

I find the support anyone but the English mentality ridiculous but helpful. When someone tells you they are an arse believe them Grin

BastardMonkfish · 08/07/2021 13:32

'Team GB?

That's rather dismissive of Northern Ireland.'

Ah I wouldn't worry. Do you live in NI? Very few people people here mind it being called Team GB. Most of our athletes represent Team Ireland anyway.

the80sweregreat · 08/07/2021 13:33

Yes, I am dreading the violence of England lose on Sunday
It's always a worry about bad behavior.
Maybe Southgate should write another open letter ? Anything is better than more bad press :(

LadyBonnibel · 08/07/2021 13:36

Thanks OP! English in Scotland here. I watched it at home but there was a lot of rooting for Denmark going on nearby - which is fine and I understand, but I know there are places and pubs it would have been very unwise to go to and that's a bit grim.

My daft MIL got DS an England footie shirt when he was about 18 months - even at that age it got some mean comments and I stopped using it. (Was less familiar with it all then!)

OTOH some Scots always back England if Scotland is out, so I'm not generalising.

And congrats to Denmark on getting as far as they did too, especially after what happened to Eriksen. If we'd been out last night, we'd have been celebrating getting that far.

Quickchangeartiste · 08/07/2021 13:39

Just here , as a Scot, to register my congratulations and support for the England team. I heard they presented the Danes with a signed shirt in honour of Christian Slater (sp?) ahead of the game, which was a thoughtful and sporting gesture.
Gareth Southgate is a great leader and sets a classy example to his team.
Good luck on Sunday 👏👏

I’m a Londoner (originally from Spain) and I think it’s a real shame how normal English people are embarrassed to fly their own flag or talk about their nation in a positive light - all because of a minority of dickheads. Do people imagine thugs don’t exist in other countries?

Self-effacement is a very British thing, but in England it’s getting out of hand. If Scotland or Wales were doing well in any sport event - they’d be shouting from the rooftops - and rightly so. It’s not as if hooligans are any less in existence in Scotland or Wales (though obviously smaller populations overall). Other countries have no qualms about celebrating and this includes their media. But it seems the English are not allowed. It’s very odd.

I can only speak for London really, but it’s one of the most tolerant and diverse cities in the world. You only realise how much you tasks for granted when you live elsewhere!

Yes Brexit was a shame, but let’s not forget that only a third of people voted for it. A third did not and the other third didn’t vote at all. The same might well happen in many countries if they were given the chance (and had the misfortune of someone like DC pulling the strings) - especially on the back-end of years of austerity. But this has nothing to do with football anyway.

The men in that team are decent young men and good role models for young people. God knows, people should be allowed to celebrate once in a while. Come on England! If it was a Spain-England final I would support you both!

wafflyversatile · 08/07/2021 14:03

Gareth Southgate is a good sort and I'll be pleased for him and his team if they win.

BZoma · 08/07/2021 14:08

Also, why have a go at English people for their national anthem because it’s not as if anyone actually chose it. Nobody knows the words past the first part anyway.

OliveToboogie · 08/07/2021 14:14

I am Scottish. I love England and have many English friends. Its the media I can't stand. So one sided and drone on and on about victories.

LepersofRuggedIsland · 08/07/2021 14:16

“I'm not so sure. I've seen the "anyone but England" mentality before, even at rugby games where the behaviour of the fans is not in question. “

This is very much the attitude of some of my family members. Bit embarrassing really as I live down here and my children are half English. It seems really petty and mean-spirited. Also the die-hard Scottish Nationalist Anti-English attitude is generally just a bit ..... meh now. Totally over it.

LimitIsUp · 08/07/2021 14:17

I thought you would get slim pickings on this thread op, but glad to see I was wrong. I love Scotland (have visited many times) so it does smart a bit when I see anti English sentiments

SetPhasersTaeMalkie · 08/07/2021 14:17

We were supporting England too last night. Not really into football but we're both finding it all fairly exciting. We will definitely be wishing the team good luck in the final.

the80sweregreat · 08/07/2021 14:17

Scotland is a beautiful place.
I wished I lived up there.

SweetestThing · 08/07/2021 14:18

I can't be doing with supporting any team that is playing against England. Well done to a group of young players who actually seem to have a keen social conscience and are developing into good role models for young people. Would be good to see women's football achievements being lauded in the same way, though, and their achievements in reaching the finals highlighted.

BashfulClam · 08/07/2021 14:30

It’s just the thought that it will be rammed down our throats for the next 60 years. I turn the commentary off as it really grates on me. Yeah well done 55 years ago but give it a rest. I had to walk out the room a few nights ago when Gary Lineker had to squeeze it into his rabbiting on.

the80sweregreat · 08/07/2021 14:37

I was soo pleased when Andy Murray finally won Wimbledon as we had ' Fred Perry ' achievements rammed at us for years and years until it got very silly, I cheered on that plucky Scot so much that year!

SweetestThing · 08/07/2021 14:37

Yes, that is going to get very tedious very quickly...
