To walk barefoot in someone else’s home?

My parents think my DP is wrong (ie. rude) to pad around their house barefoot when we are visiting. He does this when he’s wearing sandals outside. As they don’t like this, he now puts socks on when he takes his shoes off at the door.
But what if he/I were dropping in on a friend for a cuppa while wearing sandals? Should we have a spare pair of socks/slippers with us? I don’t think so! AIBU to think it’s ok to be barefoot on someone else’s carpets?

Yes, bring socks.

timeofftorecover · 06/07/2021 20:55

Bring socks. I don’t want your feet all over my cushions etc

AllTheCakes · 06/07/2021 20:56

Bring socks with you. The thought of someone bare foot in my house makes me uncomfortable.

TheGlassBlowersDaughter · 06/07/2021 20:56

It's very rude to go barefoot in someone else's home.

DismantledKing · 06/07/2021 20:56

Their house, their rules

Winterfellismyhome · 06/07/2021 20:56

Why are your cushions on the floor?
UpSlyDown · 06/07/2021 20:57

People are so weird. Presumably options are sandals stay on or barefoot so maybe just ask. Expecting everyone to bring socks all the time is silly.

MadMadMadamMim · 06/07/2021 20:57

I think you should LTB for wearing sandals, frankly.

ChatterMonkey · 06/07/2021 20:57

Yanbu i dont understand why this is an issue?

Wouldnt think twice about kicking off shoes in someone elses house, and if i was wearing sandals then that would mean bare feet. Wouldnt cross my mind that it was unacceptable... Confused

AnUnoriginalUsername · 06/07/2021 20:58

I prefer people to keep their shoes on in our house, I really wouldn't like people barefoot. Despite the fact I'm usually barefoot if I haven't been out, then I keep my shoes on.

walkoflifewoohoo · 06/07/2021 20:58

Socks and sandals. Problem solved Wink

Bubblespider · 06/07/2021 20:58

How strange to think that bare feet are rude.

mb05 · 06/07/2021 20:59

His feet might be quite cheesy or he might have flaky foot skin which they don't want on their flooring, which I do agree with. Wear Socks!

MagnoliaXYZ · 06/07/2021 20:59

My footwear is usually muddy and the first thing I do at anyone's house is remove it. I usually live in hiking boots so have socks on but if I was wearing sandals or other footwear without socks, I'd probably still kick them off and not even think about putting socks on

annacondom · 06/07/2021 21:00

I find socks uncomfortable and I consider it rude to wear outdoor shoes indoors. YANBU. Mind you, my mother thought it was unhygeinic and always brought slippers.

JaninaDuszejko · 06/07/2021 21:00

And this is why you should wear shoes when you're in someone's house. If your DPs don't want other people to be in either shoes or bare feet in their house they should supply artisan slippers for guests to wear.

Merryoldgoat · 06/07/2021 21:01

What am I reading?! I have literally NEVER thought about this.

Shodan · 06/07/2021 21:01

Yuk. No thanks to other people's bare feet on my floors, dropping dead skin and potentially athlete's foot/verruca germs everywhere. Not to mention having to look at other people's feet (hairy toes, overgrown nails) or smell them.

Take socks.

ScottishNewbie · 06/07/2021 21:01

Grew up in NZ. Shoes inside are considered incredibly rude. Everyone is always barefoot inside lol

Lulu1919 · 06/07/2021 21:02

I would hate someone barefoot in my house .....
I take slipper or socks with me if I'm not wearing socks

SpikeDearheart · 06/07/2021 21:02

I don't think I'd even notice if a guest was barefoot, let alone care. People are really fucking weird.

GiantToadstool · 06/07/2021 21:03

Other people barefoot is icky to me. Shudder.

EnjoyingTheSunshine · 06/07/2021 21:04

This thread is so weird. Only this weekend I've been barefoot in a friend's house. There was another friend visiting and she also was barefoot.

I can't comprehend how anyone could be offended by this

PammieDooveOrangeJoof · 06/07/2021 21:06

Whoa it has never occurred to me that this was a thing and now am cringing at anytime I may have taken flip flops or sandals off to be polite without realising my host is inwards seething.
