To walk barefoot in someone else’s home?

My parents think my DP is wrong (ie. rude) to pad around their house barefoot when we are visiting. He does this when he’s wearing sandals outside. As they don’t like this, he now puts socks on when he takes his shoes off at the door.
But what if he/I were dropping in on a friend for a cuppa while wearing sandals? Should we have a spare pair of socks/slippers with us? I don’t think so! AIBU to think it’s ok to be barefoot on someone else’s carpets?

Oh god, what fresh hell is this????
This is mental!

Personally if I'm visiting someone, I like to whip off my pants and rub my bare arse on YOUR soft furnishings

StrawBeretMoose · 06/07/2021 21:07

I usually only invite a handful of people I really like into my house so am not bothered by their bare feet. However generally no I don't think you should presume you can go barefoot in someone's house.
My sister would absolutely freak out if anyone went barefoot.

Bettyboodoingthedo · 06/07/2021 21:07

I’d much rather have people’s bare feet than sock fluff in the carpet! That gives me the rage when people stomp fluffy black socks everywhere!

I'm so surprised by these answers I thought everyone would think your in laws are odd like I do!

Imagine taking slippers round to someone's house when you're popping round for ten minutes! Madness!

Wow-this wouldn’t occur to me to be a problem! Shoes inside is far more manky.

LassLa · 06/07/2021 21:10

@SpikeDearheart

I don't think I'd even notice if a guest was barefoot, let alone care. People are really fucking weird.

@ScottishNewbie

Grew up in NZ. Shoes inside are considered incredibly rude. Everyone is always barefoot inside lol
I’m in Australia and agree with you.

Generally most people that their shoes off when they go inside someone’s house.

And I would think it’s so weird for someone to put socks on if they weren’t already wearing them.

I literally have never once paid any attention to anyone’s bare feet to notice if they were smelly/hairy or anything like this.

The attitudes on this thread seem so bizarre to me.

Potentially a cultural difference?

TossieFleacake · 06/07/2021 21:11

Hahaha

Never even given it a thought.
Wouldn't dream of wearing my potentially dirty shoes in someone else's home, but never considered that my bare feet may offend someone.
Feel like some people are just the professionally offended and will never be happy.

Carrotinthesky · 06/07/2021 21:11

Yanbu i dont understand why this is an issue?

Someone could have veruccas or a fungal infection. Even if they haven't, the house owner can't be sure of that. It would be rude to ask. So it's impolite to walk barefoot in someone else's house.

Odisia · 06/07/2021 21:12

Gosh, I have a friend who has a no shoes policy in her house, which is fine by me. I don't generally wear socks in summer so when I visited her last week I took my sandals off in her hall and walked around barefoot. I'd no idea anyone would think this was rude.

FinallyHere · 06/07/2021 21:12

It's very rude to go barefoot in someone else's home.

I can understand that this might be the case for your home (your house, your rules ) it is by no means a universal rule.

In my house, I don't want people walking around in outdoor shoes. Taking your outdoor shoes off snd walking round in bare feet is fine for me.

user1493494961 · 06/07/2021 21:12

Imagine if a piece of visiting toenail fell on the floor.

FinallyHere · 06/07/2021 21:13

I assume people would know themselves to cover up if they had any fungal infections etc. As you would in a swimming pool.

WorraLiberty · 06/07/2021 21:13

Mumsnet fails to make me realise how uptight some families are.

It's like half the MNetters are living at Balmoral 🤔😂

It makes me grateful to have such a chilled out, relaxed family.

*never fails

Chloemol · 06/07/2021 21:15

It’s rude, wear socksl

Dilbertian · 06/07/2021 21:15

I keep washable hotel slippers for guests who would otherwise be barefoot, or if it's cold. After all, I wear slippers, why should I expect my guest to have cold feet? Not that I mind if adults keep their shoes on indoors, as long as their shoes are not visibly dirty and it's not wet out.

(Yes, the slippers go into the laundry basket as soon as the guest leaves.)

But visiting fingernail could fall on the floor, or skin from any other part of the body, or hair or…

So what would you do if you called round in a pair of Birkenstocks or whatever and were invited in for a cup of tea? Tell them no because you may have an undiagnosed foot condition?
SwanShaped · 06/07/2021 21:19

@Merryoldgoat snap.

nocoolnamesleft · 06/07/2021 21:20

If they don't want your bare feet on the floor, don't make you take your shoes off.

goddessofmischief · 06/07/2021 21:20

Just realised I don't even go barefoot in my own house. I am weird about feet though Grin

SherlocksDeerstalker · 06/07/2021 21:20

English people are so uptight! I grew up in a country where it is considered the absolute height of rudeness to wear shoes inside. You wouldn’t even consider it.
