To walk barefoot in someone else’s home?

My parents think my DP is wrong (ie. rude) to pad around their house barefoot when we are visiting. He does this when he’s wearing sandals outside. As they don’t like this, he now puts socks on when he takes his shoes off at the door.
But what if he/I were dropping in on a friend for a cuppa while wearing sandals? Should we have a spare pair of socks/slippers with us? I don’t think so! AIBU to think it’s ok to be barefoot on someone else’s carpets?

This is ridiculous!
I can just imagine the scene:
A) hi, come in while I just blah blah blah
B) erm no sorry I can’t. I’ll just stand outside. I’m not wearing socks because it’s July but I obviously can’t come in with my sandals on and I obviously can’t take them off and come in. So I’ll stay on your doorstep instead.

WorraLiberty · 06/07/2021 21:20

Imagine all the visiting bare bums on your toilet seats! 😱

And visiting lips on your tea cups! 😱

No wonder so many MNetters were reluctant when lockdown lifted. All those visiting people doing peopley things in their homes.

TossieFleacake · 06/07/2021 21:20

This is reminding me of a thread from years ago where a poster had a basket of slippers for visitors ... that got a bit heated if I remember correctly 🤣

DontBuyANewMumCashmere · 06/07/2021 21:20

Omg I never knew there were so many weirdos who would be cross at another human's feet in their house.

If you don't like your friends' and families' feet you should have a little box by the door with spare slippers and spare pairs of socks so they can see how weird you are help themselves.

MirandaMarple · 06/07/2021 21:21

Oh for fuck's sake. Shoes, no shoes, no socks. I can't keep up.

SprayedWithDettol · 06/07/2021 21:21

I live in the country ( in a small hamlet). Everyone has dogs, stone floors etc etc. We keep shoes on - floors washed daily. Shoes come off before we go upstairs - no dogs upstairs either.
I would hate a barefooted person in my house.

maddening · 06/07/2021 21:22

I shower daily, my feet are clean! Cleaner than outdoor shoes for a start!

ScottishNewbie · 06/07/2021 21:23

@Montii yeah I definitely think cultural difference.

I make everyone remove their shoes at my door when visiting haha.
I am now thinking about all the times I've taken mine off here in the UK though......oops. I'll put some socks in my handbag Wink

WorraLiberty · 06/07/2021 21:23

@SherlocksDeerstalker

English people are so uptight! I grew up in a country where it is considered the absolute height of rudeness to wear shoes inside. You wouldn’t even consider it.
Oh pipe down with the xenophobia 🙄

And in case you're thinking of sharing your stereotypical thoughts on the Welsh, Scottish and Northern Irish, I'm not sure anyone wants to hear those either.

Carrotinthesky · 06/07/2021 21:24

So what would you do if you called round in a pair of Birkenstocks or whatever and were invited in for a cup of tea? Tell them no because you may have an undiagnosed foot condition?
I don't know, it's never happened. Nobody I know expects shoes off in their kitchen. I don't wear sandals, and always wear trainer socks or similar.

WhatIsThisPlease · 06/07/2021 21:25

Literally shuddering at the thought of a man who isn't my DP walking around my house with sweaty bare feet. Yuk yuk yuk.

Actually I don't even like DP walking around barefoot as he has really horrible feet.

PatsyJStone · 06/07/2021 21:26

Never heard of this being rude before! I’m a bare foot or sock person depending on the season. I like to think my feet are clean, I do maintain them well, nothing flaking off mine 😂. Wouldn’t bat an eyelid if someone was barefoot in my house, would much rather barefoot than the potential for dog shit, and all other nasty stuff that gets stuck on shoes.

Carrotinthesky · 06/07/2021 21:27

Omg I never knew there were so many weirdos who would be cross at another human's feet in their house

That's unnecessarily rude.

doorornottodoor · 06/07/2021 21:27

Men’s feet are gross. I really don’t want bare feet on my tiles.

LockdownCheeseToastie · 06/07/2021 21:28

Yes but friend with manky bare feet curling up with them on my fabric sofa was a bit grim. Am usually a shoes off personal apart from older people and those with limited mobility. I take slippers to friends houses and wear them without shame.

WorraLiberty · 06/07/2021 21:28

Why would they be sweaty if he was wearing sandals and no socks?

Surely someone wearing trainers/boots would have much sweatier socks underneath?

But why would you hate a barefooted person in your house when you are happy for shoefooted people? And when you wash the floors every day.?
lazylinguist · 06/07/2021 21:29

Good lord. On MN, variously, wearing shoes in someone else's house is rude, bringing slippers is rude, asking people to remove their shoes is rude, providing or not providing slippers is rude, walking around in socks is rude, walking around barefoot is rude. Peopleneed to get a grip! I don't give a monkey's what people wear on their feet in my house unless they have visibly muddy shoes.

79andnotout · 06/07/2021 21:31

They're just feet. What's the big deal?

Odisia · 06/07/2021 21:33

I honestly think there are some crazy people on here. Why so uptight? A PP who mentioned bare bums on toilet seats summed it up SmileSmile
Why on earth would someone having bare feet be an issue? If you don't want shoes on -fair enough - what are they supposed to do?

Bubblespider · 06/07/2021 21:33

What about hands? They could have been anywhere.....

doorornottodoor · 06/07/2021 21:34

We don’t have carpets downstairs and we have a dog so it would be weird for people to take shoes off unless very muddy. Floors get cleaned regularly, no big deal. No one goes upstairs except the kids and they take shoes off.

I quite often go barefoot but we’re in Scotland and it’s chilly so I often wear socks or shoes (not muddy ones).

I think maybe because we live in a cold climate, I find naked feet quite intimate (probably weird) and generally a bit yuck with nasty flakey bits (not mine but lots of peoples) do I would be a bit aghast at men taking shoes/sandals off, women not do much but given I wear mine in the house it would be unnecessary for them to take them off.

RestingPandaFace · 06/07/2021 21:34

If you want me to take my shoes off you are going to have to see my feet Pandaface wears foot prisons socks for no-one.

PS I don’t shave my hobbit toes either! Grin

DreamingofTimbuktu · 06/07/2021 21:35

I’d assume barefoot was fine unless the host asked me to keep my shoes on or I knew them well enough to know they had a foot phobia.

Nohomemadecandles · 06/07/2021 21:39

If you want my shoes off, you're getting my bare feet.
