She was a style icon yet she’s in one of those frumpy waist belts that were only in fashion briefly. The face does nothing to represent how beautiful she was. It’s too harsh.

William is a tough nut, clearly.
Some people can't hide it , once they are hurt that's it , no going forwards.
They were always chalk n cheese anyway long before he married Meghan

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 01/07/2021 17:48

@SpindleWhorl

It's supposed to be her at 60.
Whaaaat?
ForeverAintEnough3 · 01/07/2021 17:49

Ah I apologise to whoever! Apparently she did wear one of those awful belts. Apparently her outfit is modelled on the first Christmas card she sent by herself in 1993. Instead of William and Harry it’s random children of the world. So it’s a nice idea. It looks like the sculptor tried to get her expression in that photo but I think it would’ve been better to just show her smoking.

@Caramellatteplease

I agree OP. It looks like a man.
I think it bears a slight resemblance to Richard Madeley
CrappyBirthday2Me · 01/07/2021 17:50

The video looks like Harry is trying desperately to engage and William is like pffft whatever. Which I don’t blame him for.

The statue looks like a man. Far too heavy set and strong jawed for Diana.

Sorry smiling unfortunately typo Grin

‘You had ONE job. Where is my bloody emerald tiara…?

@ForeverAintEnough3

It’s a pity to see things so frosty between them. At least Harry was smiling at him. William could’ve tried a bit even just in public given the occasion. Even if he had faked friendship between them it would’ve been nice and meant the media speculation would die down. It seemed like he was a total stranger to William.
He’s behaved like a total stranger. That’s the problem. I totally understand why William is very angry and hurt in all probability.
Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 01/07/2021 17:51

@BakedBiscuit

I love that they made the statue ethnically diverse! Really moving forward in the right direction, that would not have happened without Megan.

Some of his previous work is brilliant so I expected to admire it, but to me this is horrible

Still, as PPs have said, as long as W&H like it ...

Really? To me, as a previous poster has already said, that imparts a distinct whiff of white saviour to it. It makes me feel very uncomfortable.
FreeBritnee · 01/07/2021 17:53

I think they could have been SO much better. Shame.

JudgeJ · 01/07/2021 17:54

@RickiTarr

I was hoping it would be her sitting on a bench with an arm around Paul Burrell, or maybe a reworking of the famous Muhammad Ali triumphant over Sonny Liston photograph, but with Diana and Camilla.

Oh stop. 🤣

Surely she would have been sitting on Burrell, wasn't he her 'rock'?
category12 · 01/07/2021 17:55

I think it's a shame.

If I was in charge, I'd have based a sculpture on an image like this one of her seated talking to people or one of her in body armour when she was doing the landmine thing.

I think it looks exactly like her, but I always thought she looked quite mannish and never beautiful. The outfit is informal and fine. Agree that the the front girl child is a small shrunken adult and just weird. And putting a 3rd child where you can't see them at all from the front is bizarre.

the80sweregreat · 01/07/2021 17:56

There are more women out there worthy of a statue who did great things without pots of money behind them.
She would be as unpopular as Meghan is now if she hadn't died ; people were sick of her back then and social media would have kept her even more in the spotlights.
Her campaign against the landlines and aids were high points , but generally the mood towards her was changing before her demise.
I didn't dislike her at all personally and was sad when she died so tragically leaving her boys behind , but all this canonizing now her is a bit much I think.

After what H and M have said, the lies they told, I would be wary about saying the football results in case they were twisted and misrepresented. Harry can't seriously expect William to fawn all over him.

@Theunamedcat

Its a statue not a photograph
You still want it to be a reasonably recognisable image of the person, though, @Theunamedcat - and I honestly don’t think it is.
Mochudubh · 01/07/2021 18:03

@MaBroon21

Sorry, also her face would have changed as she aged and perhaps they modeled her face on her mother’s who had the chiseled features so many of the aristocrats seem to have.
In Mills & Boon romances maybe, most of the ones I've met IRL have been chinless wonders. Mel Smith as Deb of the Month in Country Life was spot on.

I think it looks like a young Elvis (but with boobs).

AIBU to think that the statue unveiling was extremely and unnecessarily hyped up by the media due to the brother's feud so the actual event turned out spectacularly anti-climactic. In a different timeline, where W&H remained close, H is married to someone else in the UK, this event will probably just pass by as a blip.

However every single bloody article since PP's death always included the bit "...AND THEY WILL MEET NEXT AT THE STATUE UNVEILING" so it became a giant build-up that basically had nothing to do with the statue itself. Feel a bit sorry for the sculptor too as his work was slated (personally not a fan either) but it only received so much attention due to people wanting to see more of W&H body language drama.

Angrycat2768 · 01/07/2021 18:06

@GCAcademic I agree having the 'diverse' children around her does have a whiff of white saviour about it. Or like shes the Virgin Mary or something. William and Harry commissioned it. They probably didn't see the issue with a statue of a wealthy member of a very priveleged family and mother to a future King shepherding poor black children along as a bit patronising. I think a nice non human form sculpture would have been nice, but I suppose they tried that with the Diana fountain. Why do they need so many monuments dedicated to her?

the80sweregreat · 01/07/2021 18:07

Yes, you have to be careful what you say around Harry
After all, he told people he had never been out on a bike as child : proved wrong immediately in various images of him on a bike as a child.
One example of how he can't be trusted to not snitch on his brother once he is back home!
I loved his folding technique though ; he is a tidy soul at heart ( army training )

Literarydevice · 01/07/2021 18:07

In one review it said it looked like Theresa May kidnapping some kids.

Not quite the same as asking it to give off Mother Theresa vibes is it?
