She was a style icon yet she’s in one of those frumpy waist belts that were only in fashion briefly. The face does nothing to represent how beautiful she was. It’s too harsh.

It looks like a man not a beautiful woman.

Sylvan92 · 01/07/2021 16:23

I guess her children are happy with it so that’s all that matters really.

Mummyoflittledragon · 01/07/2021 16:23

W&H possibly wanted one of their mum. Not the face she showed to the world. Ie without the glamour and the glitz. A memorial, which represents what she meant to them rather than what she meant to the general public.

Personally, I find it very underwhelming. But maybe this is exactly what they wanted. The memory that she was just a person.

seashells11 · 01/07/2021 16:23

We were always told she was a beauty but I didn't see it. I thought she was attractive though and benefited from having the best that money could buy.

LostThings · 01/07/2021 16:25

@DragonDoor

It’s not what I expected at all! Who are the children by her side?

It’s all very ‘white saviour’.

What does white saviour mean? Sorry for my ignorance.
Laci3Pound · 01/07/2021 16:26

I like it, they obviously want to portray her doing her charitable work so shes not going to be dressed to the nines. I agree about the children being too small though, throws the whole thing out...

@HirplesWithHaggis

The boy looks like Obama.
🤔
Dunnesstores · 01/07/2021 16:28

I think it looks more like Clare Balding than Diana.

Maggiesfarm · 01/07/2021 16:29

I think it is fine. You don't expect a sculpture to look as pretty as the real thing, that is usual, but if you look at the statue full length, it is good.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 01/07/2021 16:31

It's impossible to create an absolute likeness in a statue. The idea is to catch the essence of a person. I like it

So do I.

It is very like Clare Balding! Needs a couple of Whippets and a poodle at her side though to make it authentic.
ChristinaXYZ · 01/07/2021 16:32

It does have a look of her in the face and in the stance, but is better round the eyes than the lower face. The random children are odd, and the girl looks like a very short adult - it is not a child's face at all. The boy is staring vacantly and not interacting with her or any thing else.

At least it is a fair go at realism, it is a statue of a named woman, and she has her clothes on. I am also quite pleased that it is not one her famous outfits as you think of her and not the clothes. It is a pretty fair go at the job.

lljkk · 01/07/2021 16:33

She looks mumsy -- I imagine that Mumsy look is what the Princes wanted. There are a zillion glam images of PD for those that prefer that.

friendlycat · 01/07/2021 16:33

It's very masculine and personally I don't like it. Having said that the figure and the clothes are quite appropriate for her of her time.

I don't understand the bit at the back that looks like another child as well.

LostThings · 01/07/2021 16:34

I like it.

ApplyWithin · 01/07/2021 16:34

But the statue is for the public in a public space.

Feelinghothothottoday · 01/07/2021 16:35

I love the belt and the detail. Not sure about the face but it’s not my statue.

MaBroon21 · 01/07/2021 16:36

I like it but I like the symbolism of the children even more and in my mind they represent her grandchildren no matter how many there eventually are.

lockdownalli · 01/07/2021 16:36

I quite like it.

Arrowheart · 01/07/2021 16:36

It's ok except for that belt. It's the kind of belt that we are all guilty of having at one time, we wore it once, realised it looked cheap and shit and put it in the charity pile.

peachyandkeen · 01/07/2021 16:36

@HirplesWithHaggis

The boy looks like Obama.
No he doesn't. You have literally said this because he is black. That is the only reason.

This is a micro aggression - take a look at yourself.

EsmaCannonball · 01/07/2021 16:36

I was hoping it would be her sitting on a bench with an arm around Paul Burrell, or maybe a reworking of the famous Muhammad Ali triumphant over Sonny Liston photograph, but with Diana and Camilla.

Statues are very hard to get right and this one is a bit too close to a parody of what one would expect of a Diana statue. It doesn't particularly look like her (or even symbolise how she looked), the clothes aren't like anything she would have worn, and the figure on the right looks like someone has stuck a 30 year old woman's head on a child's body or like one of those fairy ornaments you get in garden centres has been blown up in size.

DrManhattan · 01/07/2021 16:37

Awful

MaBroon21 · 01/07/2021 16:37

Sorry, also her face would have changed as she aged and perhaps they modeled her face on her mother’s who had the chiseled features so many of the aristocrats seem to have.

DinosaurDiana · 01/07/2021 16:39

I was hoping it was going to be her sitting on a bench like at the Taj Mahal.
