She was a style icon yet she’s in one of those frumpy waist belts that were only in fashion briefly. The face does nothing to represent how beautiful she was. It’s too harsh.

She was stunningly beautiful in real life. And warm. And humble in the interaction I had with her.
I think the statue is very odd and cold but if her so s like it then that’s probably ok.

ShirleyDab · 01/07/2021 17:07

The size of her hands are out of proportion and her blouse looks
too big round the neck and scruffy. Nothing like the elegant Diana I remember.
Such a shame because there must be some amazing artists out there who would have done her justice.

Would have been better if AlFayed chose the artist.

Conchitastrawberry · 01/07/2021 17:09

I think it’s lovely. It’s clearly from the early days judging by her hair and that was her style then.

Tickytok · 01/07/2021 17:10

It reminds me a lot of the "ugly renaissance baby" meme where babies in old paintings have hilariously adult faces, only smaller.

@Bargebill19

Why does she have a girl and a boy beside her? Or is it supposed to show her caring for the worlds children and not Harry and William. ?
There are 3 children, one is behind another. It’s not supposed to be her children.

@SingingSands

What exactly is the point of this statue?
Keeps the memory alive in our hearts dontcha know, have you seen the “tributes” outside Kensington Palace, and the loyal fans dressed up in their weird outfits. It is all a bit cultish IMO.

Memorials are for families , not random strangers who need to go out and get a life instead of canonising a serial adulterer who died in an admittedly very sad accident.

Proudboomer · 01/07/2021 17:13

LittleRa thanks I knew he wasn’t one of Diana’s relatives. He clearly needed to clean his glasses before starting this work. I am not the greatest fan of Diana but I did feel a lot of sympathy for her and I don’t think this statue is a good memorial. They should have stuck to the garden and a tasteful plaque.

Actually to me it looks more like Sophie the Duchess of Wessex — Edward’s wife — the hair, especially. I don’t think it captures her likeness at all

viques · 01/07/2021 17:14

@DinosaurDiana

I was hoping it was going to be her sitting on a bench like at the Taj Mahal.
When I went to the Taj there was a queue of people at that bench who wanted to have similar pictures taken !

It's almost like there's some deliberate sabotage going on.

With all the high profile places named after Vicky and Bertie I don't understand why they didn't simply just rename a place, institution or location with a bog standard name after Diana Princess of Wales and have done. An airport or train station for e.g. You'd remember her everytime you said it.

I don't think this embodies her spirit at all. Although I get that she loved children. But it's not doing her justice in my eyes.

Yes. Maybe the sculptor got confused.
SunshineCake · 01/07/2021 17:16

@WithLoveFromMyselfToYourself

Nesbo Michelangelo’s female nudes all look like men with tits so you are probably onto something there.
Women weren't allowed to pose so you'll see paintings where the body is a man with the woman's face painted with it. Look closely. It's so obvious once you know.
BakedBiscuit · 01/07/2021 17:18

I love that they made the statue ethnically diverse! Really moving forward in the right direction, that would not have happened without Megan.

speakout · 01/07/2021 17:21

Is there a video of the unveiling?

LittleRa · 01/07/2021 17:22

@stairway

I would have put her in that land mine outfit she famously war.
What a funny typo/misspelling when talking about landmines (war - wore)

(Not that war and landmines are funny, but you see what I mean)

LittleBearPad · 01/07/2021 17:22

It’s just a bit crap. It doesn’t look like Diana and I don’t think the shoeless children were a good plan. The belt and hair are dreadful.

Mumsnut · 01/07/2021 17:24

I like that Harry tidily folded up the green sheet

Ponoka7 · 01/07/2021 17:24

"She was stunningly beautiful in real life"

That's subjective. I think that she was slightly attractive, but had the best stylists and was tall.
I think it looks like her.
This is a official statement;
"Kensington Palace said the statue aims to reflect Diana’s “warmth, elegance and energy”, while the children represent the “universality and generational impact of the princess’s work”.
It added: “The portrait and style of dress was based on the final period of her life as she gained confidence in her role as an ambassador for humanitarian causes and aims to convey her character and compassion.”

The boys and her family worked together, they actually knew her, so I don't think anyone can say that they got it wrong.

justasking111 · 01/07/2021 17:24

Just saw the news spotting the third child hiding behind her, looked so sweet

speakout · 01/07/2021 17:25

I dislike the whole theme of token waifs/black children. A little too mother theresa for me.
Plus she looks more like a young George Michael.

BakedBiscuit · 01/07/2021 17:26

The whole unveiling looks pretty uncomfortable and lack lustre. William is is doing a good job of ignoring Harry whilst giving his attention to the bloke in glasses whoever he maybe whilst Harry hovers to the side of him like a spare part.

Grin Grin It's one of those moments where I would burst into inappropriate giggling. Cringing about the video. Not sure about the aesthetics of the sculpture but really great news that they have included children of different ethnicities. Diana would have loved that. And it's a bit of an olive branch to MM and PH.

Good point. It does not look like Diana at all.
