She was a style icon yet she’s in one of those frumpy waist belts that were only in fashion briefly. The face does nothing to represent how beautiful she was. It’s too harsh.

If only the sculptor and the commissioners of the artwork, i.e. Diana’s sons, had MN posters on hand to advise them.

They chose a timeless outfit, it could have been worn 25 years ago or now. Her dresses are showcased elsewhere. Why are people so unpleasant about something that someone’s, even adult, children chose to do for their mother.

DragonDoor · 01/07/2021 16:07

It’s not what I expected at all! Who are the children by her side?

It’s all very ‘white saviour’.

x2boys · 01/07/2021 16:08

I could understand it if she had her arms around statues of William and Harry as children or even her Grandchildren, but three random children is just a bit odd .

Arbadacarba · 01/07/2021 16:08

Agree the children are out of proportion.

LookItsMeAgain · 01/07/2021 16:08

They should have asked the sculptor who created Christian Ronaldo's image. That would have helped don't you think:

Give it a beard and it looks rather like Andy Murray when his shots aren't going too well. Same brooding look.

I wouldn't have recognised it as her, which is a pity. I hope her boys had seen it and been happy with it before they officially opened it.

Nesbo · 01/07/2021 16:10

I would imagine that if you had any real sense of the people they depict (Ie had seen that person endlessly photographed and on television) you could probably say this about almost every statue ever erected.

There are very few Michaelangelos working out there (and perhaps his didn’t much look like the real people either!!).

SheldonesqueDoesNotBelongHere · 01/07/2021 16:10

My favourite image is of her and the boys at the water park. They all just looked so happy

I suppose that would have been really hard to recreate.

All this has made me do is be so very thankful I’ve got my mam still. Even though I’m losing a bit more of her day by day.

I like it

tealady · 01/07/2021 16:12

I don't like it at all. Diana looks masculine and it does not capture her beauty. Her outfit is hideous. The proportions feel wrong, her top half is too large, but her lower half is not long enough. She always looked so elegant even when dressed casually but this does not look elegant! The children look like they are on a completely different scale and somehow very disconnected from Diana. What a shame!

WithLoveFromMyselfToYourself · 01/07/2021 16:13

Nesbo Michelangelo’s female nudes all look like men with tits so you are probably onto something there.

SheldonesqueDoesNotBelongHere · 01/07/2021 16:14

with love Grin

UmamiMammy · 01/07/2021 16:15

I don't know what I was expecting but it wasn't that!

Cocomarine · 01/07/2021 16:15

Without this thread, I wouldn’t have guessed it was her. Although, once you know there’s definitely an, “oh yeah”. Don’t mind the outfit.

TheGenealogist · 01/07/2021 16:15

It's not great. It would be more impactful had she been leading an older child by the hand, with a smaller one on her hip perhaps. Or at least two children of different sizes.

Also agree with not liking the choice of "clothes" and the face is a bit wrong too.

godmum56 · 01/07/2021 16:16

I like it. the stance is very her, as is the wide belt. I think also they have caught her as her boys will remember her.

BlueSurfer · 01/07/2021 16:17

I don’t think it’s flattering or complementary. I wonder what Diana’s family really think of it. Hopefully they are pleased and feel it’s a fitting tribute.

Proudboomer · 01/07/2021 16:17
The whole unveiling looks pretty uncomfortable and lack lustre. William is is doing a good job of ignoring Harry whilst giving his attention to the bloke in glasses whoever he maybe whilst Harry hovers to the side of him like a spare part.
toffeebutterpopcorn · 01/07/2021 16:18

I wonder if they are hissing rude words at each other (like we all did when we were kids to our siblings and had to pretend to be ‘happy families’ for a photo)

Tal45 · 01/07/2021 16:19

I think it's done her a favour, rather than being all doey eyed and 'aren't I the innocent victim with a pretty face' she looks like someone who could get something done. The kids are weird though, very random and right back to the 'Saint Diana' idea.

BirdsandBeesmakinghay · 01/07/2021 16:21

I think it’s awful. Everything about if jars. So disappointing. So long as they like it I suppose that’s what matters. If they don’t, I expect they can’t say so.

WTFisNext · 01/07/2021 16:21

Really not what I was expecting to see given the pre-reveal was emphasising it would be 'informal' and would showcase her best side.

I was honestly expecting something with a radiant smile and very relaxed posture/pose.

The posture/pose not sure which is right for a statue looks forced and reminiscent of Diana's body language when she was least happy to be surrounded by cameras.

However, whatever my perspective the draft and hopefully the final result is what her family thinks represents her well and is a fitting tribute. Ultimately it's for them and they're sharing it with the world.

toffeebutterpopcorn · 01/07/2021 16:21

Maybe it looks better in real life.

Frownette · 01/07/2021 16:22

The children confused me as well.

It did make me think how privileged the royal family are, very few people get statues and flower gardens.

I don't think it's a good likeness. But yes, if it pleases her sons.
