She was a style icon yet she’s in one of those frumpy waist belts that were only in fashion briefly. The face does nothing to represent how beautiful she was. It’s too harsh.

@VerticalHorizon repulsive comment. Reported.

VerticalHorizon · 01/07/2021 21:13

Perhaps - but it's ok to mock the memorial.

Thewinterofdiscontent · 01/07/2021 21:28

@SunSeaSurfGin

The statue reminds me off someone but it's not Princess Diana

It's really bugging me who!

Ollie from Made In Chelsea?
SpindleWhorl · 01/07/2021 21:29

Oh my god, I genuinely thought it was supposed to portray her having aged to 60, but yet remaining ageless, that kind of thing. Shows what I know.

Applesonthelawn · 01/07/2021 21:30

I think the belt is far too low. In the photo with a similar outfit she's wearing the belt much higher.

ICECream821 · 01/07/2021 21:30

I see Diana in it. Sad that Harry tried to catch William’s attention a few times but wasn’t acknowledged. I do hope the brothers make up there is so much love their mum showed and taught them that they should be able to love each other.

Thewinterofdiscontent · 01/07/2021 21:30

Obviously not smiling

Eddie Izzard?

Artistic representations of Diana never seem to be quite 'right' whatever the medium of expression. The closest evocation so far has to be, somewhat surprisingly, the portrayal of Diana by Emma Corrin in the Crown.

@tara66

I was disappointed when I saw it. I had imagined one of her dancing - as like something taken from the photos and video of her dancing with Wayne Sleep - something light and beautiful.
That's what I had in mind too.
Robin233 · 01/07/2021 21:35

@derxa

I wish they had depicted her alone with a glamorous frock on
^^
Well that's what I expected.
Simple, serene and dignified.
This was umm, not at all how I imagined it.

LizzieSiddal · 01/07/2021 21:39

They have captured none of her light or grace

I agree, it’s so disappointing that this statue will be there for centuries.

BarbaraPapa · 01/07/2021 21:40

I don't love it, but sometimes you have to see things like statues in real life to get a sense of it - not sure television always gives you a true sense of proportion.

One advantage, I guess, of sticking Hanoverians up on massive double life-size horses then lifting the whole thing onto a plinth is that no one gets a very clear look at the accessories.

the80sweregreat · 01/07/2021 21:45

Maybe a plinth might have been a better idea, but probs much more money than this ( and I bet this wasn't ' cheap '!)
Is it open to the public? I don't think it is is it?

dayswithaY · 01/07/2021 21:55

Why should William make up with Harry? I wouldn't, and Harry goofing around at a solemn occasion just screamed "I've made a prat of myself and I can't handle it."

The whole thing was awkward as hell. The Spencer family nervously standing around, not quite sure why they have been invited or how to behave. Earl Spencer offering a handshake to William because otherwise he would have been ignored.

Harry couldn't get away quick enough once the statue of The Belt was unveiled.

The whole thing was a hot mess.

I actually admire William for having a face like thunder, I would too.

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 01/07/2021 21:57

I wish the Chinese sculptress Luo Li Rong had been given the commission. She would have brought lightness, joy and movement into her representation of Diana.

Here's an example of her work, showing what might have been...

spindle 🤭

Angrycat2768 · 01/07/2021 22:09

That's beautiful. A statue of her dancing would have been beautiful. She would have been depicted free of all the crap she had to put up with in her life.

the80sweregreat · 01/07/2021 22:11

Diana loved dancing , that would have been better , light and airy.
This is stodgy and a bit fierce.
For all her faults, she wasn't fierce.

ancientgran · 01/07/2021 22:13

@Cam77

Yes good old Harry called his family racist, lied about things, no thought to dying grandfather but hey he put a smile on so all should be fine.

His family is racist. It's very well documented. Did you miss the recent news about the Palace refusing to employ "coloured" people in the 70s and beyond?

And Harry? Calling another soldier the P word, reassuring his family that the Zimbabwean girl he was bringing home was black or anything. Yes he was in a great position to be spilling the beans on others.

They did employ people of other ethnicities but he has assured us it wasn't the Queen or Philip who made racist remarks, I doubt Charles was doing the hiring in the 70s and William wasn't born.

Apart from that the story from him differed to the story from Meghan so not sure who much we can rely on any of that.

What about the rest though, did he consider his grandfather when he was dishing the dirt? Did he lie about anything?

ancientgran · 01/07/2021 22:14

I forgot the jolly Nazi uniform he decided to wear.

stairway · 01/07/2021 22:16

Yes to Diana Dancing. I’d go for that lovely image of her doing uptown girl. No saint Diana just a nice statue of her being Happy

DukeofEarlGrey · 01/07/2021 22:17

I thought it looked like her well enough until I read this thread. Now I can’t not see Claire Balding in a Father Christmas belt... Also, her hands look massive.

the80sweregreat · 01/07/2021 22:19

Let's face it, it's a Turkey.
The belt is more prominent than it should be.
It's just odd all round.
Any artists on here ? What do they think ?

ancientgran · 01/07/2021 22:21

@speakout

Maybe remember what Thumper's mum says in Bambi.

Yes that line would have saved the situation-

Quick! The thicket!

Not her most famous quote but seriously how do you think they feel, they wanted to do something to commemorate their mother, they might see her in a different way to everyone else. It must be really upsetting to try to do something positive in her memory and have the press and the internet saying how awful it is. It isn't harming any of us is it, so if people don't like it maybe just leave it.
