She was a style icon yet she’s in one of those frumpy waist belts that were only in fashion briefly. The face does nothing to represent how beautiful she was. It’s too harsh.

I think it is dreadful and looks nothing like her. Not sure why there are 3 random kids there either. It’s such a shame because I’ve seen some of the sculptors other pieces and they are fantastic. Perhaps he is not so good working from a photograph?

spongedog · 01/07/2021 19:30

@Mumsnut

I like that Harry tidily folded up the green sheet
It meant he could ignore William, who had clearly been ignoring him. The bit of the video i saw looked very awkward.

The 1st 50 posts on this thread were our 2 min conversation in the office. General disappointment.

SirVixofVixHall · 01/07/2021 19:33

I have just watched the clip. Harry is all showbiz beams and William looks as though he very much wants to get away.

BasiliskStare · 01/07/2021 19:39

I think if her sons chose that then that is their decision - but I do not like it myself. But then not not my choice.

ForeverAintEnough3 · 01/07/2021 19:39
He and other posters are right it’s very much come to me little children. I think they had the right idea, she was so good with children but maybe her crouched down to a child in a nice dress would’ve been more fitting - like these photos it was a stance she did often

However, how many statues have you seen where the woman looks actually beautiful?

There are many beautiful statues of women.
I think it would have been better to capture some of of the more symbolic elements of Diana's life rather than a " soviet" lifelike in a lumpy blouse.
This statue ( of a real woman) comes to mind.

It could be worse I suppose.
This one is displayed here in the Midlands, I believe it was in Walsall bus station at one time. Apparently the black has been stripped off but it’s not exactly improved it.

Rainbunny · 01/07/2021 19:46

Don't like it at all and honestly I'm pretty sure Diana herself would have hated it!

It makes her look harsh and frankly the choice of outfit resembles something an office assistant in the 1980's would have worn. She has no waist as well, just straight up and down!

It just won't "age" well IMO. Also, the random children were a nice idea perhaps but again were the sculptor and people involved thinking about how this statue will be perceived in several hundred years' time? People viewing it in future may not know the details of Diana's life so they'll see it and assume the depicted children were hers.

Maireas · 01/07/2021 19:47

Oh. My. God.
It looks like she was downwind of Chernobyl.

Lemonmelonsun · 01/07/2021 19:47

It's so odd, one thinks of the master like Michaelangelo or bernini and how they worked with basic tools.

And this man has all the modern wonders at his fingers tips and this is all he could create? Lumpen potatoes...

I appreciate it says more mum than style icon belonging to the world but...

ancientgran · 01/07/2021 19:47

@SingleHandSue

Totally agree about the weird belt! The perspective of the girl is all wrong too, she looks like a shrunken adult next to her instead of a normal sized child.
I saw the photo of her in that outfit, it was based on the photo I heard.
idontlikealdi · 01/07/2021 19:48

It's dreadful.

Lemonmelonsun · 01/07/2021 19:48

I don't understand why her own child not in it and Yy, 1980 shite officer wear.
. Infact it's just reminded me exactly of the outfit one of the girls in

Rita sue and Bob took wears ShockHmm

Lemonmelonsun · 01/07/2021 19:51
 • no, I telling a lie it's Sharon maiden in clock wise
ancientgran · 01/07/2021 19:52

Sorry can't post the picture but this link www.pinterest.co.uk/pin/313844667780161635/

is the one I read somewhere that they based her outfit on, it does look like it.

They commissioned it, it would look a bit full of themselves to commission a statue of themselves.
NewLifeInTheSouth · 01/07/2021 19:54

It's rubbish. Looks nothing like her and the little 'girl' standing next to her looks more like a miniature grown woman than a young child.

ancientgran · 01/07/2021 19:56

@ladygindiva

why didnt they choose to depict her embracing the AIDs victim; or in her landmine outfit... or sat alone thinking outside the taj mahal. So many defining images but they chose to do this. Shame.
.She was their mother so presumably this was how they wanted her remembered.
ancientgran · 01/07/2021 19:58
@JudgeJ it’s the unveiling of a statue commemorating his mother. William could’ve faked a laugh/smile and looked a bit more engaged and jovial rather than like he was at the dentist getting this teeth pulled. Acting that way just prolongs the whole feud. We’ve all had to grin and bear a relative or co worker we dislike. That’s life. You plaster on a fake smile and get on with it. You don’t stand there with a puss on your face making it obvious. And that’s in general not when the world is watching.
He was probably thinking of how he would like to be celebrating her birthday, you with her round to his place for a slice of cake and cuddle with the grandchildren. I think it is more odd to be all jolly and happy.

gonnabeok · 01/07/2021 19:58

looks nothing like her.

RickiTarr · 01/07/2021 19:59

@ForeverAintEnough3

It’s a pity to see things so frosty between them. At least Harry was smiling at him. William could’ve tried a bit even just in public given the occasion. Even if he had faked friendship between them it would’ve been nice and meant the media speculation would die down. It seemed like he was a total stranger to William.
William faking things would be the last straw. I thing there is a certain integrity in his refusal to be performative that reminds me of his Dad.
ancientgran · 01/07/2021 20:00

@ForeverAintEnough3

Ah I apologise to whoever! Apparently she did wear one of those awful belts. Apparently her outfit is modelled on the first Christmas card she sent by herself in 1993. Instead of William and Harry it’s random children of the world. So it’s a nice idea. It looks like the sculptor tried to get her expression in that photo but I think it would’ve been better to just show her smoking.
Sorry, I missed that for some reason but yes she is wearing that outfit so maybe she did dress like an office girl from the 80s.
speakout · 01/07/2021 20:01

Slightly longer clip here ( 3 mins)- the two brothers barely glanced at each other.

ancientgran · 01/07/2021 20:01

Yes good old Harry called his family racist, lied about things, no thought to dying grandfather but hey he put a smile on so all should be fine.
