She was a style icon yet she’s in one of those frumpy waist belts that were only in fashion briefly. The face does nothing to represent how beautiful she was. It’s too harsh.

I would imagine they have seen the statue often over the years as it was being made. They obviously liked it enough, if it's good enough for them, then it should be good enough for everyone else.

I think it is terrible - not a bit like she was in real life - much too hard. Still, it ticks a couple of boxes, I suppose.

maddiemookins16mum · 01/07/2021 18:59

If you really want to see a bad statue/bust etc, google the Ronaldo one at Madeira airport.

ladygindiva · 01/07/2021 19:00

why didnt they choose to depict her embracing the AIDs victim; or in her landmine outfit... or sat alone thinking outside the taj mahal. So many defining images but they chose to do this. Shame.

That really is bad!
the80sweregreat · 01/07/2021 19:01

Wonder how much it cost ?

ittakes2 · 01/07/2021 19:05

I thought exactly the same thing - and very formal looking considering the children are not wearing shoes.

herecomesthsun · 01/07/2021 19:05

@postitgirl

are they grandchildren? think its very unflattering to her. I dont think she would have like d it !!!!
they "represent the universality of her work", apparently
SheldonesqueDoesNotBelongHere · 01/07/2021 19:10

mustlovegin 😘

I do. And it helps even though I don’t partake very often Wink x

tara66 · 01/07/2021 19:11

I was disappointed when I saw it. I had imagined one of her dancing - as like something taken from the photos and video of her dancing with Wayne Sleep - something light and beautiful.

Did her sons pay for the statue out of their own money?

Genuine question.

Rhannion · 01/07/2021 19:12

I don’t think it’s like Diana at all imo, very disappointing.
Denise Dutton who is the sculptor of the Mary Anning statue for Lyme Regis would have been a much better choice. That piece is going to be stunning , with movement and style and charm.

MaggieFS · 01/07/2021 19:12

To be fair, I was expecting worse given statues are generally awful. At least you can tell who it is. Agree it could be better though.

I think it's why I prefer photography to statues or paintings 🤷‍♀️

Rhannion · 01/07/2021 19:15

The statues of Virginia Woolf and the new and improved statue of Mary Wollstonecraft are also going to be beautiful. I suppose as long as Diana’s sons like it but what a missed opportunity.

Clarich007 · 01/07/2021 19:17

What a shame.I hope the lads like it though.
Very disappointing. It must be difficult to get a real likeness, but where is her beautiful smile and lovely teeth. The hair is wrong too.Far too flat.I know it's easy to criticise but it's really bad.

Maireas · 01/07/2021 19:19

Feckin awful. Whoever said Soviet was right.
It reminds me of those awful Nazi sculptures presenting the ideals of Aryan womanhood.

Oh, is the Wollstonecraft statue being replaced? That’s really good news. If they fuck Virginia up I’ll be furious.
the80sweregreat · 01/07/2021 19:19

The big belt is horrible.
Very distracting.

TheWeeDonkeyFella · 01/07/2021 19:23

A while ago I read something about W&H wanting the statue to show her warm and playful side but there is no warmth or playfulness about it. Also, those tentacle like fingers give me the willies. Shock

July2mebabywouldJuly2me · 01/07/2021 19:24

It could have been worse ... like the Mary Wollstonecraft statue with the 70s bush

SingingInTheShithouse · 01/07/2021 19:24

It looks better on TV & as said above, it's a statue, not a photo or painting, it has its limits with real life likeness.

I think it's perfectly fine, not the best bit of sculpture I've ever seen & certainly not the worst either

TV said the kids are symbolic of some of her work & so that she isn't alone

Puzzledandpissedoff · 01/07/2021 19:24

Did her sons pay for the statue out of their own money?

I don't know the answer to that, but am wondering if there's any money left in the Diana Memorial Fund

I believe (?) it paid for the infamous "water feature" tribute thingy, so maybe there was money set aside for this too?

ChilliChoco · 01/07/2021 19:25

I was thinking the same.
However, how many statues have you seen where the woman looks actually beautiful?

bridgetreilly · 01/07/2021 19:26

It looks much more like her in the close ups. I suspect in person it's pretty good.
