To think that people who keep their curtains closed all day must be ill, or hiding something?

The first thing that I do, when I get up in the morning, is to open the curtains. Possibly a window as well, to let a breeze in. There are a few houses nearby, who never open any curtains. Bedroom and lounge curtains are always firmly closed, even on lovely summer days. The gardens are unkempt and scruffy, all the paintwork is peeling. But someone definitely living there, as in one case, a brand new car on the drive and I've seen pizza delivery to the other. Does anyone else find this really odd, and think that there must be something amiss with these people? It must be so dark inside. I find it almost a bit creepy.

I leave the house at 7.30am every morning for work and get back around 7/8pm.
Our garden is probably your idea of overgrown because I work too much and have too many children to sort the garden regularly. Same goes for flaking paint.

My daughter lives in a rough area, ground floor flat. Leaves her living room curtains closed so no one can see she has a lovely big TV and breaking to nick it.

DanceItOut · 17/06/2021 18:47

I keep all my south faced window curtains closed on sunny days because Otherwise it’s just too hot indoors. I do it to keep the place cooler. I do open the other curtains though.

Gothichouse40 · 17/06/2021 18:48

I need to close the curtains as, if the sun is shining I cannot see the TV properly. You know MN is amazing, Ive never met a group of people so obsessed with their neighbours who in all probability are harmless. So what if their house has paint peeling. Better than them playing loud music 24/7, or using your garden while you are out. Reading posts like this makes me glad that Im not overly involved with neighbours. Good fences definitely make good neighbours.

Chloemol · 17/06/2021 18:52

I have a neighbour who never draws curtains, cuts the grass three times a year max and has never had the windows cleaned

MrsCplus · 17/06/2021 18:53

Keeps the heat out in summer and heat in during cold months.

Mommabear20 · 17/06/2021 18:54

We keep our front downstairs blinds closed 24/7! We live on a terrace street. It's nothing to do with hiding anything but would you like being sat enjoying some family time and having nosy sobs peering in??

GillBiggeloesHair · 17/06/2021 18:55

To keep the heat, dust and flies out. We live in the Med.
Also so I can't see what might need cleaning.

Wearethechampionsmyfriend · 17/06/2021 18:55

YANBU. When I was working in welfare with vulnerable families and children most of the families had their curtains closed at any time of the day, in my experience it was due to poverty and/or depression and mental health. I had to visit many homes and not everyone I visited had their curtains closed but my main premise for visiting the families was for issues within the family or issues with the children so I may have a different view. I have purposely not read any other replies but saw lots of people voted YABU but can only speak from my own experience.

@Bakingcupcake

Our previous neighbours did this...they were into filming porn films

I believe your reply comes from bias with a nod to prejudice.

Seahorsemama · 17/06/2021 19:01

Every window a d blind in my house is open no matter what the weather.... then it comes to my 19 Ds who closes his blinds all the time!! I hate it!

Usernamerequired · 17/06/2021 19:02

Used to be the saying “Better open the curtains or people will think someone has died”. Windows are for looking out of not into-we are not living in a zoo or putting in pay for view shows, so maybe just take on board what other people have posted and move on. We also live on a busy through road and don’t want everyone looking inside our house-not up to anything dodgy or living in a hovel just like to keep our privacy with kids in the house and expensive items a burglar could eye up. We also have an expensive car in the driveway and get pizza delivered sometimes.

BiscoffAnythingIsTheWayForward · 17/06/2021 19:04

My youngest is autistic and hates the curtains open. So we don’t have much of a choice 🙈😬 sometimes as people have said before, if it’s a hot day I keep them closed to try keep the heat out a bit as we are south/west facing

Bushgirl · 17/06/2021 19:04

Just wondering if you've found people do this at other places you've lived. Is probably do the same if I thought I was being judged by a busybody. What business is it of yours if somebody wants to close their curtains during the day or doesn't want to mow their lawn. Or have an effing pizza delivered for god's sake.! Haven't we enough o. Our plates without this sort of judgemental behaviour.

My Autistic child also likes the curtains closed-sensory overload, headaches and anxiety attacks otherwise. Also thinks it will stop people breaking in so we have curtains on front and back doors. Suits me just fine and better than a meltdown
linsey2581 · 17/06/2021 19:17

Maybe they don’t like have nosy neighbours like you looking in their windows. My bedroom curtains are nearly always closed as hubby does night shift and I do day shift so someone is always sleeping.

Mongyxxx · 17/06/2021 19:19

I have really bad anxiety and depression at the moment and if I'm having a really bad day I shut my curtains just to keep the world out and I really have nothing to hide and I'm sure there are more people out there like this

Mummadeze · 17/06/2021 19:29

My daughter doesn’t like the light, it gives her a headache. I open the curtains, she closes again. My partner prefers to sit in a darkish room too. Could be lots of reasons but mostly it is down to personal preference!

Pinkfluff76 · 17/06/2021 19:32

It keeps the heat out

Trinacham · 17/06/2021 19:33

sometimes when we are in a rush for work we forget to open some of the curtains. Some people may just have busy lives!

Ohjustboreoff · 17/06/2021 19:38

We have a house at the bottom of our road where I've never seen the front lounge curtains open. We've been in our house 8 years. The mold that is growing up the curtain lining Confused grim!

Cloglover · 17/06/2021 19:38

We live at the back of the house during the day so often don't use the front room so curtains can stay closed until the evening when we use it. Leave the front bedroom early in the morning and don't go back in it until night so curtains often stay shut for days/weeks at a time. House is scruffy at the front just because I have enough to do without sorting that out. Back garden is lovely tho, but neighbours can't see that! We work hard and are good people so I find it puzzling that strangers would judge my behaviour creepy. Indeed I would judge them harshly for that!

GapingWhole · 17/06/2021 19:45

There is nothing odd or creepy about it! We keep our blinds shut - especially on a “lovely summer days” because we both struggle with the hot weather and keeping the blinds shut helps to keep the house cooler

Whiskeylover45 · 17/06/2021 19:45

We live in a ground floor flat and the amount of people who brazenly stare in, both as they pass and stop and stare in, is ridiculous. We have privacy film on most of the windows that let us see out but no one can see in, however in our bedroom I keep the blinds/curtains shut. Purely because I don't want to come in and find people staring in. I find that creepy if I'm honest, much more so than people who keep their curtains closed
