To think that people who keep their curtains closed all day must be ill, or hiding something?

The first thing that I do, when I get up in the morning, is to open the curtains. Possibly a window as well, to let a breeze in. There are a few houses nearby, who never open any curtains. Bedroom and lounge curtains are always firmly closed, even on lovely summer days. The gardens are unkempt and scruffy, all the paintwork is peeling. But someone definitely living there, as in one case, a brand new car on the drive and I've seen pizza delivery to the other. Does anyone else find this really odd, and think that there must be something amiss with these people? It must be so dark inside. I find it almost a bit creepy.

To be fair, in this thread www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/4270284-AIBU-to-love-looking-in-people-s-windows?pg=1 people should keep their curtains closed if they don't want strangers to stare in their windows.

TheHuntingOfTheSarky · 17/06/2021 17:41

I'm an introvert and hate the thought of nosy buggers peering at me while I'm in my own home so I keep the front blinds shut. Our house has a very wide and open frontage plus we live next to a turning area so people apparently can't help but gawk from their cars 🤨

purplebunny2012 · 17/06/2021 17:43

Straight answer, my DH walks around naked all day until school pick-up.
YABU, none of your business. I prefer having them closed, myself, why should I be happy for people to look in my lounge? When FIL is here curtains are open all day and I hate it

snoopy2016 · 17/06/2021 17:46

I keep mine closed for privacy as we have a very nosey neighbor over the road that can see straight into our house, I hate the feeling of being watched.

GYNisaliarWTF · 17/06/2021 17:47

YABU. We live on a corner. Our baby’s room is the front bedroom so even on a hot summers day I wouldn’t rise the blind to let the heat in there.
And the lounge (window directly underneath) has the curtains shut the majority of the time. Why?
Because
A: nosey fuckers who want to peer in all day piss me off.
B: I don’t have a blind in that window and can’t seem to find one I like despite being here two years.
C. If those curtains are open in the daytime and I happen to be home, it glares on the tv.

We get the sun on the front in the morning so keeping the curtains closed keeps it kick abd cool.

Also, we have 2 receptions and so don't really go into the front one before work/school run so it's often yhst we jist forget to open them as we haven't used that room.

Ravenclawsome · 17/06/2021 17:49

Our house is south facing and stupidly well insulated. If we don't keep the front curtains closed during the day the house becomes unbearably hot - a couple of years back we were sitting at about 30degrees overnight in our bedroom, even with a ceiling fan going.

Maggiesfarm · 17/06/2021 17:49

@Earthling1994

It seems more common in council estates/non affluent/working class areas to keep the curtains closed. Middle class houses tend to have the curtains open each morning
I never knew that. Have you read a survey or something?

Where I live is fairly ordinary, middle middle class I suppose, if I have to categorise, but nothing special. I keep my curtains closed. I have no idea what my neighbours do, I don't look. I assumed, maybe wrongly, that nobody noticed my windows.

c9590 · 17/06/2021 17:50

Haha I think that's there's loads of reasons curtains wouldn't be open. Babies sleeping. Someone got up in a rush. Someone who works nights. Reduce heat. Watching a film. Privacy if room is on a street. Someone getting changed. Someone having sex. Migraine. Illness. Or perhaps they have beautiful curtains and want to look at them? Etc.

TheBigFatMermaid · 17/06/2021 17:52

The people over the road from me are dicks. Very nosy, judgmental dicks!

When my DC were young, I'd close their curtains as I put them to bed. The dicks saw that as a signal to make as much noise as possible, loud music and shouting as soon as the curtains shut. It happened far too often to just be coincidence.

Keeping the curtains shut put a stop to that. They didn't know what time they were being put to bed.

Couchbettato · 17/06/2021 17:52

I kept my curtains closed when I was suffering from depression really badly because I didn't want to be a part of the outside world.

They were shut for a long time.

MrsMarni · 17/06/2021 17:52

or maybe simply want their privacy?

WalkingOnTheCracks · 17/06/2021 17:54

Maybe they don’t want to be peered at by the sort of people who monitor pizza deliveries.

SpilltheTea · 17/06/2021 17:55

It really shouldn't be a shock that not everyone shares the same opinion as you. Maybe they open the windows at the back of the house, but not the front. Maybe they walk around in the nude and don't want to scare the children. I wouldn't even notice if certain houses always had their curtains/windows shut because I couldn't give a shit.

Maggiesfarm · 17/06/2021 17:56

It's nobody else's business anyway. I am actually appalled that people notice so much about their neighbours. However this is so trivial. Different people have different habits is all.

CocoLady · 17/06/2021 17:56

My mother always said to me never ever leave your curtains open in the day as it looks like a drug den if you do 🤣

Pastapotato · 17/06/2021 17:58

All my windows that face the road are shut I want the privacy. Its not dark, I have light and its not depressing for me.

Supergirl1958 · 17/06/2021 17:58

💯 unreasonable! MYOB!! Unless it has an impact on your life then really has absolutely nothing to do with you! I work full time so don’t get chance to open curtains and blinds for the masses to nosey into my house! Plus it really is no one else’s prerogative!!

TiredTattoodMama · 17/06/2021 18:04

These people 😂 our blinds at the front are always closed. To stop people being nosey at our business and wondering why they're closed. There's nothing wrong with us people. 😂

Middle123 · 17/06/2021 18:07

I always open my blinds in the morning & some windows, but often a bit later in the day I will close them if I’m watching TV or sometimes if I’ve got a headache I find it too bright as I have large windows in my living room & kitchen. Some days though, especially if it’s a grey, winters day, I keep them closed because I like to have a light on or some lamps & my mum always told me if my light was on I should shut the curtains/blinds so people can’t see in.

Spagootiba · 17/06/2021 18:13

I'd imagine several reasons. Privacy, keep house cool, dog that barks at anything going past and the most taboo answer, an untidy home or the home of someone with a hoarding issue.

TA365 · 17/06/2021 18:22

There are any number of reasons people might not open their curtains. I leave mine closed as much as I open them.
I sit, watch the news and have breakfast in my PJs before I start getting ready for work, so I don't want people looking in. If I end up rushing around sometimes I forget to open them and then when I get home there's only an hour of daylight so it doesn't seem worth it.
Closed curtains muffle traffic noise.
I find seeing movement outside distracting.
A few months ago some woman genuinely came right up to my window, hand on the glass, and just stared at me. I got up, opened the door just as she was closing the gate and asked what she was doing. She just smiled, waved and walked down the street. Now THAT was creepy.
Sunlight can cause glare on tv/computer screens.
Closed curtains can keep the house cooler.
I used to have a roommate who was a nurse. After he finished a night shift he would struggle to go straight to sleep, so he'd curl up on the sofa with his duvet and watch tv until he fell asleep. Both the lack of light and the privacy of having the curtains shut was appreciated.

There are probably loads more reasons.

So the first thing you do in the morning is open the curtains, that's great. Good for you.
The rest of the world is not you. They don't have to follow your routines.
To assume that because other people don't share your desire for open curtains is a sign that something wrong or underhand is going on is a bit extreme.

I don’t give a monkeys whether neighbours have their curtains or blinds closed or open all day. I’m surprised people notice or care.
