To think that people who keep their curtains closed all day must be ill, or hiding something?

The first thing that I do, when I get up in the morning, is to open the curtains. Possibly a window as well, to let a breeze in. There are a few houses nearby, who never open any curtains. Bedroom and lounge curtains are always firmly closed, even on lovely summer days. The gardens are unkempt and scruffy, all the paintwork is peeling. But someone definitely living there, as in one case, a brand new car on the drive and I've seen pizza delivery to the other. Does anyone else find this really odd, and think that there must be something amiss with these people? It must be so dark inside. I find it almost a bit creepy.

We keep some closed with curtains over them on one side of the house for privacy.

Having said that, someone below us never ever opens any of their windows (or if they do, we never see or hear it) and it baffles us - we're in a new build which is a heat trap and I don't know how they manage it.

I have paper blinds up in my front room Windows as I’m waiting for our shutters to be made and as we are street level
People walk past and look right in our windows, it’s really disconcerting!
Also when it’s hot I tend to keep curtains shut as it keeps the room cooler.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 16/06/2021 17:41

We keep our front shutters closed all day in the summer to keep the rooms cool. I open them in the winter to let the sun in but if it's really cold and windy closed shutters give an extra level of protection against the cold.

Also we tend to spend most of our day in the back rooms of the house and don't tend to even go in the front lounge until the evening.

raeroe · 16/06/2021 17:41

I keep my bedroom curtains closed all the time, it's ground floor and looks out on to the road. When I moved in a woman at my work was asking if my new house was the one with xyz... my house is raised up so she couldn't have seen xyz without walking up the path and looking in my window!! After that I just kept them shut in case she came for a nosy

skippy67 · 16/06/2021 17:42

Dd has her shutters and window closed during the day because she suffers badly with hay fever.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 16/06/2021 17:42

We have some neighbours who in the 10 years they have lived there never open the blinds or windows. They’re a young professional couple and honestly I think it’s weird. I feel mostly sorry for their dog

Many dogs get spooked by passes by, shadows, birds etc. Might be why they keep them closed.

TwoZeroTwoZero · 16/06/2021 17:42

Because I cba to open them only to close them again later on.

Because it's too hot with them open.

Because the light from the window lands on the TV meaning you can't see it.

To avoid flies coming in.

Because we don't use some of the rooms during the day so forget to open the curtains.

Roundandballlike · 16/06/2021 17:42

My bedroom curtains are always shut. My partner works nights full time so is in bed during the day. I can see everything through the window in the house opposite and it feels a bit close for comfort that they can also see the same of my house so even on partners nights off I keep them closed. We have windows open whatever the weather. Downstairs we have privacy blinds so you wouldn't know if the curtains were open or closed but they are, in fact, open.

motogogo · 16/06/2021 17:43

Or lazy of keeping the sun out

GooodMythicalMorning · 16/06/2021 17:44

A) It keeps the dog cool
B) It stops the dog barking at everything
C) Extremely nosy neighbours, who always seem to be outside!

Spidey66 · 16/06/2021 17:45

It helps keep the room cool and prevents glare on the tv or computer.

Nothing dodgy whatsoever.

How strange to think it and its none of your business anyway.Hmm

wildeverose · 16/06/2021 17:45

Mine are always closed in summer - keeps the house cool.

M4J4 · 16/06/2021 17:46

I find it almost a bit creepy.

Not as creepy as you stalking your neighbours every morning, OP.

Let them be.

Excilente · 16/06/2021 17:46

case and point.. i had my curtains open briefly earlier to look out for someone dropping something off.. was sitting in my window, minding my own business.. someone walking past stopped to let their dog crap on the grass verge outfront, and spent the entire time staring in my windows, even made eye contact with me... wtf??

Stop staring in peoples houses and more might leave their curtains open.

Jennyfromtheculdesac · 16/06/2021 17:46

@NcagainNC

I keep all my curtains shut on ‘lovely summer days’ especially because it keeps my house cool
This. House faces south so bedroom curtains especially are closed all day at the moment.
IsabellesMissingSock · 16/06/2021 17:46

I keep my curtains closed in the day to keep it cool. I'm neither dodgy nor ill, thanks Hmm

massiveportion · 16/06/2021 17:47

Maybe they don't want nosey judgey bastards peeking in

Inanun2 · 16/06/2021 17:48

😂 This has brought back memories.
I personally always open my curtains in the day time as I love the light and close them at night as soon as a light goes on in the room but each to their own.

I was told growing up that shut curtains mean there has been a death and I must not forget to open them, pretty extreme and no idea where that came from but I have never forgotten it.

OnceUponAMidnightBeery · 16/06/2021 17:48

Oh, and the garden is a mess and it’s “grotty” because we both work and have caring commitments plus our own issues 👍

What was that saying from a poster recently? Trunky needs a bun??

tigger1001 · 16/06/2021 17:48

Yet on another thread posters who dared to suggest that it's rude to look into people's windows were told they should just shut their curtains if it bothered them....,

Why would you care if someone has their curtains open or closed?

Popkids · 16/06/2021 17:48

@AnUnoriginalUsername

I think you might be my neighbour! 😂 our front curtains stay closed because I don't like people walking down the street looking in, it feels invasive. And our garden is scruffy because we're too busy with work and it's not a priority.
This. Hypocritically I must admit I do enjoy looking in other people's windows so thanks to those who leave theirs open Grin
InTheDrunkTank · 16/06/2021 17:48

The gardens are unkempt and scruffy, all the paintwork is peeling.

Maybe they're worried about judgemental neighbours peering in?

Agreed .I find daylight can be quite harsh on my eyes, especially on a sunny day.

We spend thousands on our homes, through rent, bills council tax, etc let people enjoy them how they want and not cater to nosy neighbours.

BoysTownGang · 16/06/2021 17:49

My living room and bedroom curtains are closed til midday - I leave the house at around 5-30am for work and return at midday, so apart from several weeks on sunny mornings, it is still dark.
Due to the time I get up, I often have a nap in the afternoon and tend to close the downstairs curtains as the dopey Ddog tends to bark at other days if she can see out.
There are many sensible reasons why some people have their curtains closed, Op - it’s not always laziness!!

TheMotherlode · 16/06/2021 17:49

Maybe they work nights?
