To think that people who keep their curtains closed all day must be ill, or hiding something?

The first thing that I do, when I get up in the morning, is to open the curtains. Possibly a window as well, to let a breeze in. There are a few houses nearby, who never open any curtains. Bedroom and lounge curtains are always firmly closed, even on lovely summer days. The gardens are unkempt and scruffy, all the paintwork is peeling. But someone definitely living there, as in one case, a brand new car on the drive and I've seen pizza delivery to the other. Does anyone else find this really odd, and think that there must be something amiss with these people? It must be so dark inside. I find it almost a bit creepy.

My optician told me years ago - my mum was complaining about me always squinting in the sun and he told her to lay off (I’m the only one in my family with blue eyes). I’m now 50s so it was eons ago

Freyaismyname · 17/06/2021 12:02

How about mind your business! Why is it anything to do with you?

IntoAir · 17/06/2021 12:03

Goodness, I hope I live NOwhere near you

LuckyAmy1986 · 17/06/2021 12:06

I've never really paid attention to whether my neighbours' curtain/blinds/shutters are open or closed

Same. Let alone knowing they were always closed all the time. How would you know unless you were always looking out for it? Weird!

BiBabbles · 17/06/2021 12:29

Some opaque curtains let through a lot of light and some people have home layouts which means that even if the curtains are drawn are the front, there is a lot of light coming from elsewhere.

The back of my current home is a sun room with obscured-clear roof that lets in a lot of light. Even with the blinds closed, I can use most of my ground floor during the day without turning on any lights - the layout means it's very bright. My maternal grandparents who never opened their front curtains had an open plan kitchen-diner living room so the back windows lit up everything during the day.

I don't get assuming that someone with their curtains drawn is sitting in the dark - that seems a leap of imagination I don't tend to have on walks. A sudden obvious change would probably catch my attention more than people doing the same thing for years. It's certainly a leap too far to think they're ill or hiding something based just on that or a scruffy garden.

Mine stay shut down stairs because when I go to work I do not want people seeing if our dog is home as dog theft is on the increase. When I'm home it's because our house is on the end where everyone walking up our road can see in the whole way downtrend street so I don't need people staring at us eating dinner.

Onesnowynight · 17/06/2021 13:09

You’d hate me as I’m sitting with the blinds and curtains closed and lamps on!! I’m doing zoom and the light that comes in makes the one half of the screen light up, so have to close the curtains!

LolaButt · 17/06/2021 13:34

Sometimes I’m just too lazy to open them all.
Other times I forget.
When I’m feeling really sad and shitty I don’t open them.

Pretenditsaplan · 17/06/2021 13:35

Mine is from disability. Due to the layout of my house i cant actually acess most of my curtains. Their behind a large tv that i cant move or behind the headboard/a coat rack. I also suffer from migraines from bright light so opening them for more then half an hour could trigger 3 days of living hell. My gardens over grown as well... because disability. Just because it seems odd to you dosnt mean it is.

HappilyHadesBound · 17/06/2021 13:47

Well, you learn something new everyday...

I never knew people actually WANTED to be able to see me walking around topless...

Sorry it offended anyone that I shut the curtains! I'll get my boobs out for everyone to see in future!

It must be so dark inside

You're pretty ignorant of non-artificial ways of keeping a house cool, then @Bluedeblue Keep windows & curtains closed during the heat of the day, then open up after dark to try to cool things down.

But basically, you're the creepy one. So pleased you're not my neighbour.

soooooooG · 17/06/2021 16:17

We only have one window facing the road and if we don't use that room we may forget to open it.

Louise1909 · 17/06/2021 17:19

I keep mine closed sometimes cause I play on my ps4 and I can't see it when they are open during the day

ilovechocolate07 · 17/06/2021 17:20

On a hot day it keeps the house cooler with closed windows and curtains. I can't say that I look at other houses enough to notice.

BunnyRuddington · 17/06/2021 17:21

We keep our bedroom ones closed on hot days. The sun is on the windows all day and frankly, we just can't sleep in there otherwise.

I'm quite happy to open them on all of the other days.

lazystar · 17/06/2021 17:23

I have had severe asthma, chest infections and hayfever since February.
So the windows in my bedroom are shut with an air purifier, on a summer day its cooler with the curtains shut too.
Lo has had hayfever also so her bedroom is the same, although I do air through and then put the purifier back on.

Bakingcupcake · 17/06/2021 17:24

Our previous neighbours did this...they were into filming porn films

kittycat863 · 17/06/2021 17:28

It's sweltering in our house, even with all the blackout blinds being closed during the hottest part of the day. If you let the sunlight in during hot summers, our house is barely conducive to life.

Mummabear89 · 17/06/2021 17:30

I don't open my curtains as I have horrible neighbours who torment my children through the windows. But our upstairs windows are always open for air flow. Definitely don't have anything to hide just don't want my children getting upset because of nasty people

wildchild554 · 17/06/2021 17:30

Yabu, I keep mine shut for 3 reasons, firstly I don't like people peering in when they are walking past, our front window is right onto the street, secondly my son has a habit of keeping taking off his bottom half and don't want him flashing people and finally the sun gets too bright in the day in there and I wouldn't be able to comfortably use the room if I didn't use the room as I am sensitive to bright light and get migraines.

WiddlinDiddlin · 17/06/2021 17:32

My front room window has the curtain across permanently as we have a tropical tank in front of it, the light, if it were open, would cause massive algae blooms and issues with the temperature and water parameters.

Upstairs front window in bedroom is often shut in the day as the front of the house gets VERY hot if not. Ditto front spare room, but also OH has his model trains in there and apparently the world will END if they get faded by strong sunlight.

Curtains at the back are opened during the day, closed at night, but you'd never see that as the back of my house isn't visible from any road.

RaspberryCola · 17/06/2021 17:32

My migraines are triggered by light. I work from home, and I love sitting in the gloom like a little house goblin.
DH hates it and wants every curtain wide open, he’s a maniac.

Harls1969 · 17/06/2021 17:32

I sometimes keep the curtains shut to keep the house cool.
Maybe they're hoarders. Maybe they walk around naked. Maybe they like the dark. Maybe they work nights. I'm sure there are lots of reasons (including some very odd ones).

fakeplantsdontlookreal · 17/06/2021 17:34

I am neither hiding something or weird or ill.

My bedroom ones are closed most days especially in the summer to keep the heat out. I do open them sometimes obviously to let air in and stop mould build up, although the window is permanently vented for that reason.

The first thing I do every day is open the bathroom, living room and kitchen windows to let some air in. Sometimes the living room ones are closed as well, if DD is here because the sun shines on the TV. Sometimes the window is open and shock horror the curtains are closed.

Some expert on radio 2 yesterday was saying how we should keep the curtains drawn to keep the sun out.

TaniaL · 17/06/2021 17:36

I suffer with low mood and anxiety and on my worse days I can have my blinds shut for weeks until I feel I want to see the world outside doesn't always mean there's something dodgy going on you never know whats happening or how people are feeling behind that door and I'd hate to think people assume I'm a dodgy person when I'm just having an episode. If it isn't hurting it causing you bother why is it an issue?
