To think I'm not being unreasonable about my lack of excitement?

Me and hubby upgraded our cars today and they will be ready start of July. Husband got a completely different make and model, fancier car than the one he has just now. Whereas I just chose the same make and model that I have now, only difference being that it's a different model and a 2021 plate. Since then he has been very excited which is fair enough, but he keeps asking if I am and I'm not really - why would I be? It's the same car basically. He's now had a few drinks and is calling me ungrateful and spoiled Hmm

AIBU? He's like a dog with a bone tonight, it's quite odd really.

Why did you upgrade?

elementofslurpee · 04/06/2021 20:33

Sorry meant different colour not model. I just have always upgraded every 3 years since age 21 - this time I just didn't want too much of an increase in price each month.

OP posts:
Cocomarine · 04/06/2021 20:34

Is he paying for it?
Odd to call you ungrateful and spoiled if not.
You have a problem in him not understanding you at all. If he’s paying for it, he probably thinks he’s buying you excitement as well as a car. So I can see why he’d be disappointed that he’s not getting his money’s worth. Still a dick move.

Not sure why you’re bothering to upgrade though - sounds like a waste of money.

What a waste of time, money and resources. Particularly if you don't actually care!
elementofslurpee · 04/06/2021 20:37

@Cocomarine I pay my car and he pays his. Not sure how it's a waste of money...it's a 3 year contract and it actually starts costing me more after that.

OP posts:
HooverPhobic · 04/06/2021 20:37

Is this a lease?

MadMadMadamMim · 04/06/2021 20:37

He sounds a boring twat.

I could not give a shit what I drive - and I'd be fucked off with some drunk telling me I was ungrateful for not dancing with delight in anticipation of a different coloured car in July.

Is he always this dull?

PigGondola · 04/06/2021 20:37

I don’t get car excitement. To me they’re just things that keep the rain off and go, preferably reliably.

HooverPhobic · 04/06/2021 20:37

My post crossed with op's

Cocomarine · 04/06/2021 20:38

My XH and I earned the same and were what I’d call well off. Half of MN would dream of our disposable income, half would think it a pittance 😂

He traded every 3 years and when we divorced was driving a brand new Porsche on lease.

I’d had the same owned outright Vauxhall Astra for about 6 years, at that point 10 years old.

Was never an issue - different people like different things. But given that I didn’t care, no way would I have wasted my money changing every 3 years.

I think you're both ridiculous for pointlessly upgrading your cars for absolutely no reason what a huge waste of resources. I wouldn't be excited about upgrading my car to a similar model but then I would never do it in the first place.
elementofslurpee · 04/06/2021 20:38

@HooverPhobic yes a lease

Or are you just dense?

I'm #TeamDH.

It’s not a waste of money to switch from one contract to a new one where you pay the same for a newer car.

I mean, it’s often a waste of money compared to just buying a car that’s older than 3 years, and keeping it longer than 3 years.

Of course that depends what you’re paying, and how much the older car is costing you in maintenance. But on my 10yo car owned for 5 years, which is by no means an old banger, I’ve done the sums and I’m quids in.

WallaceinAnderland · 04/06/2021 20:41

What is the point in upgrading every 3 years though, if you're not bothered about having a newer car?

AntiWorkBrigade · 04/06/2021 20:41

If he’s really excited about the new cars I can see why it would be fun to talk about them together and hence the disappointment if you’re just not feeling it, but taking it out on you by name-calling is not on.

I have this every time I book a holiday - so excited I want to chat about it. My partner has no holiday excitement until we’ve checked in. I don’t get angry with him!

LindainLockdown · 04/06/2021 20:42

Perhaps you are the dense one OP if you don't get that what you are doing is so shit so the environment, so unless you and "hubby" are upgrading to electric cars YABU.

Cocomarine · 04/06/2021 20:42

So if you pay for it yourself, how exactly are you spoilt and ungrateful? To the universe, for not showing his version of appreciation for your privileged position?

I’m going to go for a very MN OTT LTB here 😂 but... no fucking way would my husband get away with that. Not that he’d even try 🤷🏻‍♀️

elementofslurpee · 04/06/2021 20:44

@LindainLockdown that's not the point of this thread though...not sure what you're not grasping Confused

OP posts:
Cocomarine · 04/06/2021 20:44

And actually, you’ve said you don’t want “too much of an increase” - so, are you paying more? (allowing for inflation) In which case, the fuck would I get excited about paying more money for the same damn car 😳

NavalGazer · 04/06/2021 20:45

We change cars every 2-3 years (sometimes more often). We used to lease them.

We don’t have kids and we like cars so sue us.

Just got two brand new 21 plates. Both north of 50k. The his time we bought them as we didn’t want the monthly cost.

Suspect we’ll still change them next year when the new shinier models come out

elementofslurpee · 04/06/2021 20:45

@NavalGazer and quite right, why not! Enjoy!

OP posts:
Nohomemadecandles · 04/06/2021 20:45

You are being unreasonable to use the word "hubby" Grin
It is a bit spoiled to brush off being able to afford a new car every three years. I can see his point.

LindainLockdown · 04/06/2021 20:46

That's fine OP, I can totally see what you are not grasping.
