Is three bottles of wine a week too much?

My husband, not me. Since I've been pregnant, so abstaining from drink altogether, I've been more aware of his drinking. It's by no means a problem judging by his behaviour but I just wondered if this is (obviously a bit unhealthy) but normal for some. It's spread out over the week so he doesn't binge at weekends.

It’s probably not so dissimilar to what my DH drinks but I do think it’s a bit much and tell my DH that regularly.

HangingOver · 23/05/2021 16:16

There's no "safe" amount of alcohol in spite of the 14 units thing. In the grand scheme of things it's not a lot but one thing I've learned in recovery is EVERYONE who drinks is potentially susceptible to phycological and physical dependence...even if they've drunk moderately for years. I'm not saying there's anything the matter with him, I'm sure there isn't, but it's always worth keeping in mind.

FlorenceWintle · 23/05/2021 16:18

Yes, I’d say so. It’s slightly less than half a bottle a day, every day.

PotteringAlong · 23/05/2021 16:19

It sounds a lot to me.

The $64,0000 question though is can he go without it or not?

LemonSwan · 23/05/2021 16:21

Yes. But I smoke 3 packs of cigarettes a week so I cant talk.

FirewomanSam · 23/05/2021 16:22

It’s probably around what I was drinking before I went sober and definitely felt like ‘too much’ to me - as in, I was starting to get hangovers on work days and feeling generally crappy about myself. It’s hard to put a specific quantity on it, though. Apart from simply noticing the number of bottles he gets through, is there anything else that concerns you about his drinking? Does it negatively impact his or your life in any way (e.g. spending more than you can comfortably afford on wine, or often waking up hungover, being late for work etc?)

Coldwine75 · 23/05/2021 16:24

I get through 2 a week and love my wine every evening, I decided now it makes me happy so I am not stopping it !

I dont think 3 a week is too bad ?

otterbaby · 23/05/2021 16:31

That's just under 2 large glasses, which doesn't seem like a lot but having that every single day probably isn't great, health-wise.

But a lot of people enjoy wine as a hobby too. Suppose it's like @PotteringAlong said if he's happy to go without or seems a bit dependent on it.

TeacupDrama · 23/05/2021 16:34

a bottle is on average 10 units so 3 bottles is 30 units which is above recommended levels or 4 units + per day if drinking every day which would mean he was over the drink drive limit every day though not falling over drunk

I am not one of those that think a half glass of sherry or a steak and ale pie is too much but 30 units a week, week after week rather than just on your annual holiday is too much Adrian Chiles did a documentary about this though he was a social drinker and drinking more than your DH

ZaraW · 23/05/2021 16:53

Yes it is too much.

DrManhattan · 23/05/2021 16:56

Would be way too much for me but might be ok for other people. I'd feel like absolutel sh*t drinking that much a week

PinkOrchidDream · 23/05/2021 17:20

Thanks for the insight everyone. Pre pregnancy I wouldn't have batted an eyelid and would be keeping up with him Blush

Definitely; far too much.

1.5 bottles a week should be the max, and even then that would work out at one big glass a day. He should aim for at least 2 nights a week with no alcohol, and to cut down his consumption to the weekly recommended units for a man.

charliebear78 · 23/05/2021 17:34

I drink thursday through to Sunday.
I go through 2 bottles(maybe a bit more)
I have recently thought it was getting to be too much, so I stop after half the bottle is gone and this is working for me.
I KNOW I love Wine a bit too much-But like a PP wrote, It relaxes and makes me happy and I love the taste!!
I exercise 4/6 times a week, Eat Healthy and don't smoke-So I do not see drinking wine as something to worry about.
Everyone( well it feels like most people I know) drink this amount and probably more.

Coldwine75 · 23/05/2021 17:41

I try and just have a glass a night, i love it, i sometimes topple over to 2 !

Minstrelsgetinmybelly · 23/05/2021 17:48

I’m t total so it sounds like a lot to me. But I know a lot of people who drink that amount if not more.

It’s not unusual but I personally find it too much.

Biancadelrioisback · 23/05/2021 17:51

I've been drinking about the same since lockdown and I've realised how bad it is for me so I'm cutting down

Slippy78 · 23/05/2021 17:56

That's just under 2 large glasses
Nope, it's just over 1.

1.5 bottles a week should be the max
and even then that would work out at one big glass a day.
Nope, that's less than a small glass per day.

Where do you guys get your measurements from? A small glass is 125ml, a standard is 175ml and a large is 250ml.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 23/05/2021 21:07

It’s more than double the recommended amount. I’d be unhappy with that much from a health point, financial point and making it seem the daily norm to children when older.

TheKeatingFive · 23/05/2021 21:17

For me it would be less about ‘how much’ and more about how his body copes with it (is his sleep broken for example) and whether he could do with out if it needs be.

A few designated alcohol free nights a week would be a good starting point.

Thats what I thought, 1.5 bottles a week is not much, i get through 2 and dont think thats a problem at all, sleep fine, get up fine, id say 3 is ok too
CambsAlways · 23/05/2021 21:21

Yes far too much

Coldwine75 · 23/05/2021 21:22

No its not

Standrewsschool · 23/05/2021 21:25

I think that’s quite a lot if he drinks that everyday. Can you suggest he only drinks weekends?

PurpleDaisies · 23/05/2021 21:30

Having alcohol free days is good but he should cut down to the recommended amount which is half what he’s drinking.

Have you looked at how many units/calories are in that?
