Is three bottles of wine a week too much?

My husband, not me. Since I've been pregnant, so abstaining from drink altogether, I've been more aware of his drinking. It's by no means a problem judging by his behaviour but I just wondered if this is (obviously a bit unhealthy) but normal for some. It's spread out over the week so he doesn't binge at weekends.

Its what the NHS says, its what the Government made up and passed to the NHS. So you dont eat salty or sugary foods then or exceed your calories content per day? Must be so restraining to live a life like that, yawn

Mrbob · 23/05/2021 22:46

And coldwine I think the fact you are so defensive makes me think that you possibly know you are drinking too much

Coldwine75 · 23/05/2021 22:47

No not at all, I buy 2 a week and they last all week, i love my nightly glass and im perfectly happy and healthy, just annoys me about the Jobsworths on here thinking they know it all :)

Again, you are choosing to deflect away from alcohol to things which have no bearing on this thread.

It really worries me that so many are oblivious to the dangers of regular, excessive alcohol consumption.

TheKeatingFive · 23/05/2021 22:48

Well I know of at least two people dying of liver failure in their 50s who didn’t drink at all, so it’s not a straightforward causal relationship by any means.

Of course not, but you seriously can’t be saying that regular alcohol consumption about the recommended limits makes that far more likely? Confused

It worries me that so many are oblivious to the dangers of regular, excessive, processed meat consumption.

So many things out to get you.

Coldwine75 · 23/05/2021 22:50

No it doesnt make it more likely , i know of people dying from cancers who didnt drink at all and ate healthily all their lives, my Grandad included.

FOJN · 23/05/2021 22:51

1.5 bottles a week should be the max and even then that would work out at one big glass a day.
Nope, that's less than a small glass per day.

There are 9 small (125mls) in 1.5 bottles of wine so it's more that one small glass a day.

750mls + 375mls = 1125mls divided by 125mls = 9

The size of the glass is not really relevant though it's the number of units that count and 1.5 bottles of 13.5% ABV wine contains 15 units. A bottle of 12% wine contains 9 units.

Do you mean above?

Define ‘far’.

At the levels we’re talking about it might be slightly more likely. And that might be a risk worth taking for many.

I think it's a lot but it's pretty much what DH drinks per week. But he is 6'1 and well built. And he does Dry Jan without effort, so he's not actually dependent on it.

Coldwine75 · 23/05/2021 22:53

But realise, doesnt matter its about alcohol , your argument is weak as there are so many other areas in our diets and life that can seriously affect health worse than wine. Bemused you.cant.see.that

Tell me honestly if you’ve ever gone on a food thread and posted something like this

If I saw a thread like that I would absolutely point it out.

I don’t see how that’s relevant here.

100% relevant but if you cant see that you are narrow minded.

Soooooo narrow minded, shocking eh
Dogoodfeelgood · 23/05/2021 22:58

I think 3 between a couple would be OK - especially if you factor in that you might have one at a dinner out on the weekend - but even then that’s a lot... I think me and DP might do 2 bottles of wine a week - but we do have G&Ts as well so probably units wise it would be 3 bottles - and I definitely feel like we are absolute lushes! 3 bottles for one person is too much as a regular habit though and I would also be concerned that someone was drinking that alone - if you’re drinking together it’s more social isn’t it, and you might keep topping each other up so drink a bit more than you should.

AhNowTed · 23/05/2021 22:58

3 a week sounds fine to me.

It's basically a couple of glasses a day.

PurpleDaisies · 23/05/2021 22:59

So people shouldn’t worry about doing something that is potentially damaging to their health because there are other things that could be worse for them?

People shouldn’t even be made aware that what they’re doing is potentially risking all sorts of health problems so they can make an informed decision about whether to make changes?

That’s all I’ve tried to do on this thread. Posters should know what the recommended limits are. Posters should know that “normal” daily alcohol consumption can exceed these limits. They are all free to do whatever they want.

PurpleDaisies · 23/05/2021 23:01

@Coldwine75

Narrow minded how? I am genuinely confused about what you think narrow minded means.

Tomorrow morning, when you're sober @Coldwine75, you might read back your reactions to this thread and think about just why you took it so personally.
